Background: Obesity, gastrointestinal disorders, and mental health conditions are major drivers of employer healthcare expenditures, yet nutrition-focused interventions are infrequently reimbursed by health insurance. Precision nutrition, which integrates genetic, gut microbiome, biometric, and behavioral data to guide personalized dietary and lifestyle changes, may offer a scalable approach to reducing costs associated with diet-responsive conditions. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of a precision nutrition digital therapeutic on employer medical spending for diet-responsive conditions in

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is associated with a significant cost for employers providing health insurance benefits to their employees. The latest study on the topic was published in 2002, estimating the unintended pregnancy rate for women covered by employer-sponsored insurance benefits to be approximately 29%.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to update the cost of unintended pregnancy to employer-sponsored health insurance plans with current data. The secondary objective was to develop a regression model to identify the factors and associated magnitude that contribute to uninte

Many low- and middle-income countries are spending money on high-tech healthcare, such as simulation centres, pneumatic tube systems, and even robotic platforms. These upgrades are sold as a sign of modernisation and global parity. Yet, people in these places pay a lot out of pocket for basic care, and many end up broke from catastrophic healthcare costs. Notably, most of these technologies do not always deliver real patient-level benefits. They are often underused, incur substantial maintenance, and are usually installed in tertiary care hospitals, leaving the majority of the population behin

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic illness with recurrent exacerbations. The objective was to evaluate longitudinal costs related to BD in an employer-sponsored medical plan.
METHODS: This analysis utilized 5 years of administrative claims data. Claimants with a diagnosis of BD were matched to plan members (1:5) based on age, sex, and years of follow-up.
RESULTS: Medical costs for hospitalized BD members were 3.5 times more expensive than the general population (BDhosp = $92.2K vs General population = $26.8K). Average 5-year paid costs among hospitalized members with BD was $107K,

INTRODUCTION: Employers are one of the largest purchasers of health care in the United States, covering more than 165 million people, yet they face persistent difficulty controlling costs. Most enrollees are in self-insured plans, which rely on third-party administrators (TPAs) to build provider networks and adjudicate claims. The fees employers pay these administrators are an under-documented source of health care spending. While recent litigation and news reporting allege that administrators overpay providers and charge large fees, the peer-reviewed literature offers limited detail on how th

An estimated 300,000 cases of Lyme disease occur in the United States annually. Disseminated Lyme disease may result in carditis, arthritis, facial palsy or meningitis, sometimes requiring hospitalization. We describe the epidemiology and cost of Lyme disease-related hospitalizations. We analysed 2005-2014 data from the Truven Health Analytics MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters Databases to identify inpatient records associated with Lyme disease based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes. We estimated the annual number and

PURPOSE: An indicated prevention strategy (IPS) targeting long-term sickness absence risk showed its effectiveness in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). To compare its costs and benefits with other preventive strategies within occupational health, an economic evaluation is essential.
METHODS: An economic evaluation was conducted from the employer, healthcare, and societal perspectives. RCT data was used regarding the IPS efficacy, with additional collected data, covering 12 months of follow-up. The intervention group received an early intervention (n=132), and the care-as-usual group receiv

A toss of the coin by the modern-day employer reveals two options regarding genetic testing in the workplace. The employer may choose to take advantage of increasingly precise, available, and affordable genetic testing in order to ascertain the genetic characteristics--and deficiencies--of its employees. This outcome exposes the employer to a vast array of potential litigation and liability relating to the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fourth Amendment, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, and state legislation designed to protect genetic privacy. Alternatively, the employer may neglect t

Workplace weight-loss programs are a win-win tool that companies can use to boost both health and wealth. The financial payoff-for one Texas employer, about $2.50 in return for every dollar spent--stems from lower health care costs and reduced absenteeism.

Chronic diseases drive healthcare costs, and employers seek scalable strategies to improve health outcomes and control expenses. Telehealth behavioral care shows promise for managing chronic conditions, but its long-term economic value in employer populations is still unclear. We assessed the cost-effectiveness and ROI of a behavioral care (LBC) model using a Markov model in a custom analytic tool. The model simulated disease progression, healthcare utilization, and QALYs over five years from the employer perspective. Transition probabilities, costs, and mortality risks were obtained from the

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of step therapy for antidepressants on prescription drug and other medical utilization and spending. Step therapy is a type of pharmaceutical benefit design that requires that patients try certain specified medications (typically generic medications) prior to using alternative, more expensive medications within the same medication class. Step therapy is not the same as generic substitution.
METHOD: Using the 2003-2006 Thomson Reuters MarketScan claims databases, antidepressant users enrolled in employer plans that implemented antidepressant step ther

OBJECTIVE: Propel is a bioabsorbable drug-eluting sinus implant inserted following an endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The objective of this study was to estimate the budget impact of incorporating Propel post-ESS for CRS patients from a self-insured employer or third-party payer perspective.
METHODS: An Excel-based budget impact model was developed. Estimates of the prevalence of CRS, rates of ESS, and effectiveness outcomes, along with direct and indirect costs from CRS were obtained from published literature. A total population of 1.5 million members was hyp

OBJECTIVE: Research on the workplace costs of mood disorders has focused largely on major depressive episodes. Bipolar disorder has been overlooked both because of the failure to distinguish between major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder and by the failure to evaluate the workplace costs of mania/hypomania.
METHOD: The National Comorbidity Survey Replication assessed major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder with the World Health Organization (WHO) Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and work impairment with the WHO Health and Work Performance Questionnaire. A reg

BACKGROUND: The tripling of U.S obesity rates since 1990 has accelerated employee health issues, employer health care costs, and loss of productivity and contributed to staggering levels of overall healthcare costs. In this paper, we describe an academic-business partnership to determine the feasibility of implementing within a local city government department, the anti-obesity program-Teaching Awareness of Mindful Eating (TAME).
METHODS: Based on the Information, Motivation, Behavior Skills Model, 15 employees classed as overweight (n = 4) or obese (n = 11) completed the 8-week mindful eatin

INTRODUCTION: Approximately, 20% of adults in the United States have a behavioral health concern, resulting in $732M in direct medical spending and over 5 million lost workdays annually. Employers bear a substantial share of these costs. The objective of this study was to describe the integration of behavioral health services at employer-sponsored health clinics.
METHOD: Retrospective cohort analysis of patients seen for individual behavioral health services from 1/1/2018 to 12/31/2018 in employer-sponsored clinics.
RESULTS: Among the 2,954 patients cared for by a behavioral health provider,
