Gender differences in supported employment.

Questions about gender equity have been asked in many aspects of the disability field and have resulted in findings that women with disabilities have significantly different experiences than do men. We analyzed an existing database of information on supported employment and natural supports to ascertain whether gender plays an important role in the employment of people with mental retardation. The findings suggest that there are several important differences. Although women were perceived as being more socially appropriate on several dimensions, they worked in jobs traditionally stereotyped by

Why can't we fund supported employment?

Work is one of the most valued social rules in modern society, contributing to a person's sense of economic well-being, self-esteem, personal identity, and social status. Conversely, the inability to work or sustain employment due to a psychiatric condition is the primary factor in determining eligibility for disability benefits, such as Social Security Disability Income or Social Security Supplemental Income. Just as work is valued strongly by society, it is also important to people with serious mental illness. In this editorial, we contemplate why we cannot "do the right thing" and fully fun

Predictors of Acquisition of Competitive Employment for People Enrolled in Supported Employment Programs.

This study aims at assessing the relative contribution of employment specialist competencies working in supported employment (SE) programs and client variables in determining the likelihood of obtaining competitive employment. A total of 489 persons with a severe mental illness and 97 employment specialists working in 24 SE programs across three Canadian provinces were included in the study. Overall, 43% of the sample obtained competitive work. Both client variables and employment specialist competencies, while controlling for the quality of SE programs implementation, predicted job acquisitio

Supported employment for adults with severe mental illness.

Participant Engagement in Supported Employment: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Purpose This study aimed to synthesise the available knowledge on how participant engagement in supported employment (SE) interventions is presented, defined, and conceptualised. We also aimed to develop a working definition of participant engagement in SE based on the results of our study. Methods This systematic scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. The following databases were systematically searched: EBSCO, SCOPUS, Social Care Online, and JSTOR. We included peer-reviewed publications in English based on empirical studies. Results Sixteen articles

Mental illness, supported education, employment and recovery: Ben's story.

Supported education programs aim to facilitate the successful return to higher education for people living with mental illness who may have experienced educational interruptions due to their illness. This article shares the story of Ben who lives with mental illness and his experience of participating in an Australian supported education course. The two authors draw on a qualitative life history approach as they reflected on Ben's experiences of mental illness, educational disruption and returning to education and employment. The losses associated with educational disruption and the positive a

Evaluation of an employment program for people with mental illness using the Supported Employment Fidelity Scale.

BACKGROUND: The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model aims to achieve open employment for people with mental illness. The Supported Employment Fidelity Scale (SEFS) is a 15-item instrument that evaluates the extent to which a service follows the IPS principles of best practice. This paper describes the IPS model and an evaluation of a specialist employment program for people with mental illness using the SEFS. METHODS: The SEFS enabled a quantitative assessment of service provision against the criteria of evidence-based practice principles. Data were collected from multiple sources. In

Introducing Individual Placement and Support (IPS) supported employment in Japan.

Individual Placement and Support is a standardized model of supported employment, developed initially for people with serious mental disorders and now applied to people with a range of disabilities. More than two dozen randomized controlled trials around the world show that the approach helps a majority of participants to succeed in competitive employment. Individual Placement and Support is spreading rapidly across the USA and in many other high-income countries, with facilitation by an international learning community.

Supported employment outcomes for transition age youth and young adults.

TOPIC: Supported Employment (SE) can help transition age youth and young adults to obtain employment and develop meaningful careers and financial security. PURPOSE: The purpose of this analysis is to examine the role of SE in achieving employment outcomes for youth (ages 18-24) and young adults (ages 25-30), compared to outcomes for older adults. Given the importance of employment to the quality of life of young people in establishing work histories and starting careers, it is important to have a better understanding of what client and program characteristics result in better employment outco

Scaling Up Evidence-Based Supported Employment in the United States.

Implementing evidence-based practices has become a standard policy in U.S. behavioral health care. However, current penetration remains inadequate, and longitudinal studies of scaling up these practices are rare. This article examined the steady, 3-decade growth of individual placement and support (IPS), the evidence-based model of employment services for people with psychiatric disabilities. The number of IPS programs in the United States has increased to >1,000. Nevertheless, coverage remains limited, and challenges to further growth are substantial. Facilitators of IPS growth over the past

Evidence-Based Supported Employment for Individuals With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a chronic and disabling psychiatric disorder, experience high rates of occupational impairment. OCD symptoms commonly affect individuals' vocational aspirations and result in disability and the need for financial support, problems that are not addressed by current clinical practice guideline recommendations for treating OCD. This Open Forum highlights the need to address occupational impairment caused by OCD and makes the case for formally evaluating whether evidence-based supported employment can help individuals with OCD find and succeed

METHODS: People (N=194) with mental illness receiving Housing First were assessed at three-month intervals over 24 months. Analyses determined variables that were associated with accepting or declining randomization to supported-employment services. A regression model was used to determine the odds of obtaining employment. RESULTS: Of t

The effect of military sexual trauma on competitive employment status following veterans health administration supported employment services.

Military sexual trauma (MST) is prevalent, and some initial evidence suggests it is associated with impaired employment outcomes. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers supported employment (SE) and Community-Based Employment Services (CBES), which consist of individualized employment support integrated with mental health treatment. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence and effect of MST on competitive employment outcomes following participation in SE or CBES. Participants were a national set of Veterans who participated in VHA SE or CBES services between 2015 and

Supporting Adolescents with Guidance and Employment (SAGE).

Supporting Adolescents with Guidance and Employment (SAGE) is a multifaceted, community-based violence-prevention program. Its target is African-American male adolescents in Durham, North Carolina. Public health professionals, county government officials, and local businessmen collaborated in its development and implementation. The program is based on the paradigm of risk and protective factors, in which various risk factors for youth violence are buffered by modifiable, protective psychosocial processes. SAGE includes an eight-month African-American Rites of Passage program (adult mentoring,

Employer practices supporting sustainable employment of people with disabilities across the employment lifecycle: a scoping review of reviews.

PURPOSE: Although many studies have examined factors influencing employment outcomes for persons with disabilities (PWD), existing evidence remains fragmented and seldom integrates findings across the full employment lifecycle. This scoping review of reviews synthesizes barriers and facilitators to sustainable employment, identifying factors that inform inclusive workplace design and employer practices. METHODS: Scopus was searched up to April 30, 2026. Two reviewers independently assessed titles, abstracts, full texts, and quality. Evidence was organized along five stages of the employment l
