Application of a Biosurfactant from Bacillus velezensis GJ1 as an Emulsifier and Antibacterial Agent for Food Systems.

The demand for natural and multifunctional ingredients in food systems has increased interest in microbial biosurfactants as potential alternatives to synthetic emulsifiers and antimicrobial agents. However, their practical functionality in food systems remains insufficiently explored. Here, a biosurfactant produced by Bacillus velezensis GJ1 was evaluated as a functional emulsifier and antibacterial agent for food applications. Whole-genome sequencing confirmed the presence of lipopeptide biosynthetic gene clusters associated with surfactin and iturin production, while no genes related to kno

The remarkable role of emulsifier and chitosan, dextran and PEG as capping agents in the enhanced delivery of curcumin by nanoparticles in breast cancer cells.

Curcumin has been found to be a powerful anti-cancer agent. However, its efficacy is limited by its poor solubility in aqueous medium. The bioavailability of curcumin was increased by poly (lactic-co-glycolic) acid [PLGA (60/40)] nanoparticles with different capping agents such as Chitosan, Dextran and PEG and emulsifier (Tocopherol Poly (Ethylene Glycol)1000 Succinate: TPGS) with good drug loading and delivery performance. The preparation of nanoparticles derived from PLGA was achieved by emulsion solvent evaporation method and the resultant nanoparticles were characterized. The encapsulation

Self-emulsifying Delivery System for Improving Biopharmaceutical Performance of a Novel Antitubercular Agent: Formulation Development, Biological Activity and Pharmacokinetic Evaluation.

A nitroimidazole-derived lead (IIIM-019) was developed as a part of our institutional drug discovery program in the area of tuberculosis. This molecule suffers from poor aqueous solubility and to overcome this limitation, lipid-based self-emulsifying drug delivery system (SEDDS) was developed. The SEDDS was characterized for emulsification efficiency, droplet size, stability and drug release. The morphology of SEDDS was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The cellular uptake of formulation was assessed in Caco-2 cells and anti-tubercular activity was evaluated in M. tubercu

Development of Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery Systems (SEDDSs) Displaying Enhanced Permeation of the Intestinal Mucus Following Sustained Release of Prototype Thiol-Based Mucolytic Agent Load.

In this study, mucoactive self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDSs) based on sustained release of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) were developed for providing effective intestinal mucopermeation. Polymeric ionic complexes of NAC were formed with polyethyleneimine (PEI), Eudragit E 100, and Eudragit RS 100 and loaded into a novel SEDDS. The SEDDSs exhibited a stable average size of 75 ± 12 nm (polydispersity index (PDI) < 0.3) and showed a rise in the zeta potential from −17.31 mV to −7.72 mV. On Caco-2 cells, SEDDSs at 1−3% were non-cytotoxic. An average of 91.8 ± 5.4% NAC was released from SEDDS

Contact sensitivity to emulsifiers.

Common emulsifiers were tested in over 1,200 patients with eczema. Triethanolamine stearate tested at 5% in petrolatum caused irritant reactions in 9.5% of the patients. On the other hand, non-ionic emulsifying agents tested at 10-20% produced irritation in only a few cases. Allergic reactions were found in 2.1% of those tested. Lanette, sorbitan sesquioleate, the Spans, polyoxyethylene oxypropylene stearate, polyoxyethylene sorbitol lanolin derivative, and triethanolamine stearate each elicited allergic reactions in 0.3-0.7% of the cases. The Tweens caused an allergy in only two cases, but gl

Formation and Stability of Food Emulsions: A Review through the Lens of the Oil Phase.

Emulsions serve vital roles in the food industry, including structural design and delivery of functional components. As thermodynamically unstable systems, emulsions undergo various destabilization processes over time. Therefore, understanding the instability mechanisms of emulsions and how to combat them have been long-term research topics. Although extensive research has focused on the impacts of the aqueous phase and emulsifiers on emulsion stability, the regulatory role of the oil phase has long been undervalued, and the underlying mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. This review main

Seawater-resistant emulsified epoxy resin for effective sand control in unconsolidated sandstone oil reservoir.

Sand production in oil wells is recognized as a persistent challenge during oilfield development, adversely affecting well productivity and operational stability. Chemical sand control methods, particularly resin-based sand consolidation, are considered a promising solution due to their operational simplicity and effectiveness. However, conventional emulsified resins are known to be highly sensitive to high-salinity environments, which can lead to emulsion destabilization and reduced consolidation strength. To address this limitation, a novel emulsified epoxy resin system was developed in this

PLGA nanoparticles formed by single- or double-emulsion with vitamin E-TPGS.

Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is a biocompatible member of the aliphatic polyester family of biodegradable polymers. PLGA has long been a popular choice for drug delivery applications, particularly since it is already FDA-approved for use in humans in the form of resorbable sutures. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs are encapsulated in PLGA particles via single- or double-emulsion. Briefly, the drug is dissolved with polymer or emulsified with polymer in an organic phase that is then emulsified with the aqueous phase. After the solvent has evaporated, particles are washed and collected

Emulsified silicone oil droplets in the canal of Schlemm.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the presence of emulsified silicone oil (SO) droplets in the canal of Schlemm with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: AS-OCT images from an eye that had undergone retinal detachment (RD) surgery three years ago were reviewed. At the time of surgery, SO had been used as the tamponading agent. RESULTS: The AS-OCT images demonstrated that minute emulsified SO droplets were present in the canal of Schlemm. CONCLUSION: Retention of SO in the eye for an extended period of time after RD surgery leads to secondary glaucoma. Presence of minute em

Amphiphilic nonionic block and gradient copoly(2-oxazoline)s based on 2-methyl-2-oxazoline and 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline as efficient stabilizers for the formulation of tailor-made emulsions.

HYPOTHESIS: Poly(2-alkyl/aryl-oxazoline)s (PAOx) have seen a resurgence of interest in the new millennium due to their biocompatibility, low toxicity, and higher tunability compared to poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEG)s. Due to the straightforward access to hydrophilic and hydrophobic PAOx, it was hypothesized that amphiphilic PAOx should be capable of stabilizing oil/water (O/W) interfaces. Furthermore, the control of their composition, chain length, and monomer distribution could suggest the formulation of tunable emulsions. Special emphasis was given to evaluate whether spontaneously formed amph

Emulsifiers and Intestinal Health: An Introduction.

Food additives in general, and emulsifiers in particular, are considered to be important dietary components with a potential to harm the intestine, in part by promoting intestinal inflammation. There is inadequate objective information about the specific nature and the magnitude of the problem. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized approximately 450 items added to our foods as being generally regarded as safe and has placed them on a generally regarded as safe (GRAS) list. Additionally, it has also approved approximately 3000 "food additives." There is a general lack of transpar
