Phase inversion of ionomer-stabilized emulsions to form high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs).

Herein, we report the phase inversion of ionomer-stabilized emulsions to form high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) induced by salt concentration and pH changes. The ionomers are sulfonated polystyrenes (SPSs) with different sulfonation degrees. The emulsion types were determined by conductivity measurements, confocal microscopy and optical microscopy, and the formation of HIPE organogels was verified by the tube-inversion method and rheological measurements. SPSs with high sulfonation degrees (water-soluble) and low sulfonation degrees (water-insoluble) can stabilize oil-in-water emulsions; t

Electrocapillary bridge formation from emulsions.

Liquid bridges formed under electric fields are well known in polar liquids such as water, whereas their formation in nonpolar oils is generally challenging. In this work, we show that electric-field-induced liquid bridges can readily form from oil-in-oil emulsions. Silicone-castor oil emulsions confined in a film-air-film geometry between parallel ITO electrodes generate multiple bridges under DC electric fields that are lower than those required for the corresponding pure oils. Bridge formation depends strongly on both electric field strength and emulsion mixing ratio. The number of bridges

[Intravenous fat emulsions in toxicology].

Lipid emulsion intravenous infusion is recommended in reversing cardiac toxicity of local anaesthetics. Recent reports indicate, that it may be useful in the treatment of cardiotoxic drug overdose. While the mechanism of action is not fully understood, creation of a "lipid sink" is the predominant effect. The aim of the paper is to present the efficacy and indications for the use of lipid emulsion in acute poisoning, basing on the medical literature.

Alternative lipid emulsions versus pure soy oil based lipid emulsions for parenterally fed preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: The pure soybean oil based lipid emulsions (S-LE) conventionally used for parenteral nutrition (PN) in preterm infants have high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content. The newer lipid emulsions (LE) from alternative lipid sources with reduced PUFA content may improve clinical outcomes in preterm infants. OBJECTIVES: To determine the safety and efficacy of the newer alternative LE compared with the conventional S-LE for PN in preterm infants. SEARCH METHODS: We used the standard search strategy of the Cochrane Neonatal Review Group (CNRG) to search the Cochrane Central Registe

Lipid emulsions prevent postoperative abdominal adhesions.

INTRODUCTION: Adhesions are the most common cause of long-term morbidity after abdominal surgery and most often cause various forms of intestinal passage disorders ranging from partial obstruction to complete, life-threatening intestinal obstruction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the protective effect of intraperitoneally administered lipid emulsions on the formation of adhesions in larger animal model, as the lubricating effect of phospholipids and the mechanical barrier of the lipid component are combined with the anti-inflammatory effect of fish oil. METHODS: Thirty-one fema

Natural antioxidants in emulsions O/W.

This study compared the capacity of propolis extract (PE) and thyme waste extract (TWE) to prevent the oxidation of oil in water (O/W) emulsion, as well as their impact on emulsion apparent viscosity (AV) in the presence of wheat germ and almond oils as lipid phase. For this, central composite design (CCD) and principal component analysis (PCA) were performed. Oxidation process was monitored by evaluating the formation of primary and secondary lipid oxidation products, at the same time the AV behavior was determined evaluating consistency index and flow behavior index. The results revealed tha

Intravenous Lipid Emulsions in the NICU.

The clinical goals of intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs) have changed since their initial development. In the past, 100% soybean oil was used to provide energy and prevent an essential fatty acid deficiency. Now, different oil sources are used with the goal of improving nutritional status and preventing common neonatal comorbidities. We now have a better understanding of specific ILE constituents, namely, fatty acids, vitamin E, and phytosterols, and how these components contribute to complications such as intestinal failure-associated liver disease. This review addresses the development and c

Perfluorocarbon Emulsions, Platelet Counts, and Inflammation.

Perfluorocarbon emulsions (PFC) are a class of lipid-coated micelle slurries wherein the active center of the micelle is a completely halogen/fluorine-substituted hydrocarbon capable of dissolving very large quantities of nonpolar gases. Due to their unique enhanced solubility for oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2), PFCs have been used in research as enhanced gas transport media for situations wherein the microcirculation is dysfunctional. In the early 1990s a PFC emulsion was approved for human use during coronary artery angioplasty and one is presently in use in Russia as well as other countries.

Skinny emulsions take on granular matter.

Our understanding of the structural features of foams and emulsions has advanced significantly over the last 20 years. However, with a search for "super-stable" liquid dispersions, foam and emulsion science employs increasingly complex formulations which create solid-like visco-elastic layers at the bubble/drop surfaces. These lead to elastic, adhesive and frictional forces between bubbles/drops, impacting strongly how they pack and deform against each other, asking for an adaptation of the currently available structural description. The possibility to modify systematically the interfacial pro

Critically ill patients and fat emulsions.

In critically ill patients, lipid tolerance may be impaired. In ICU, patients are usually given TPN including fat emulsions. If sedation with propofol is given simultaneously the fat load increases and may exceed the maximal clearing capacity of exogenous fat emulsion unless the administration of the parenteral fat is adjusted to take account of the lipid contained in propofol. An accumulation of fat may result in the so-called 'fat overload syndrome'. Close monitoring of serum triglyceride concentration is therefore recommended to avoid fat overload.

Immune modulation by parenteral lipid emulsions.

Total parenteral nutrition is the final option for nutritional support of patients with severe intestinal failure. Lipid emulsions constitute the main source of fuel calories and fatty acids (FAs) in parenteral nutrition formulations. However, adverse effects on patient outcomes have been attributed to the use of lipids, mostly in relation to impaired immune defenses and altered inflammatory responses. Over the years, this issue has remained in the limelight, also because technical advances have provided no safeguard against the most daunting problems, ie, infectious complications. Nevertheles

Fluorocarbon emulsions: methodology to assess efficacy.

The fluorocarbon emulsion Fluosol-DA (20%) is an acellular O2 carrier that has potential as a red cell substitute. Clinical evaluation of efficacy requires knowledge of the ability of the perfluorochemical (pfc) phase to both load and unload O2. A method is described to measure the oxygen dissolved in the pfc and aqueous phases, and the oxygen chemically bound to hemoglobin, during use of this drug. These O2 contents are used to calculate the contribution of the pfc phase to total O2 delivery and O2 consumption (VO2) and the fractional extraction of O2 in the pfc phase. The technique requires

Colloidal delivery platforms for chlorogenic acid: nano-emulsions, nanoparticles, nanoliposomes, and pickering emulsions in sustainable food preservation.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA), a plant-derived phenolic compound, has attracted considerable attention as a multifunctional bioactive agent due to its potent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, positioning it as a promising candidate for sustainable food preservation. This review critically compares four colloidal delivery platforms for CGA, nanoemulsions, nanoparticles, nanoliposomes, and Pickering emulsions evaluating their formulation strategies, release mechanisms, and food-preservation performance, and situates them alongside direct treatments and edible coatings/films as complementary, lo

[Toward a second generation of fluorocarbon emulsions. Methodologies: synthesis of fluorocarbons, formulation, preparation and control of emulsions].

The fluorocarbons to be used as intravascular gas carriers may be prepared: by fluorination of hydrocarbons, by means of gaseous fluorine or of metallic fluorides or by electrolysis in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride; by selective synthesis from small fluorinated molecules. Selective synthesis seems preferable because of the high purity of the compounds thus obtained, allowing fairly simple purification and detoxification procedures. The adequacy of fluorocarbons for intravascular use (limited by the values of some of their crucial physicochemical properties such as vapour pressure, gas dissolving

The research about microscopic structure of emulsion membrane in O/W emulsion by NMR and its influence to emulsion stability.

PURPOSE: This paper discussed the influence of microstructure of emulsion membrane on O/W emulsion stability. METHODS: O/W emulsions were emulsified with equal dosage of egg yolk lecithin and increasing dosage of co-emulsifier (oleic acid or HS15). The average particle size and centrifugal stability constant of emulsion, as well as interfacial tension between oil and water phase were determined. The microstructure of emulsion membrane had been studied by (1)H/(13)C NMR, meanwhile the emulsion droplets were visually presented with TEM and IFM. RESULTS: With increasing dosage of co-emulsifier,

Phase-field models for particle-stabilized emulsions.

Particle-stabilized emulsions are a cornerstone of soft matter science due to their broad applications and fundamental relevance. Computer simulations provide key insights into the formation and behavior of these emulsions; yet, current methods are limited by the spatiotemporal scales accessible for study. The principal issue is that particles are resolved individually. In this work, an alternative strategy is introduced based on phase-field theory, for which we establish the framework. By evolving continuous fields, large-scale dynamics can be simulated in a computationally efficient manner.
