Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a widespread and often sub-clinical microsporidian parasite of homeothermic animals, including man. The biology, pathology and taxonomy of the organism is reviewed and the available diagnostic methods discussed. Transmission is almost invariably via the oral route either by ingestion of contaminated tissues and other foods or by ingestion of infected urine, perhaps on food, or when animals lick the coats of others. Transplacental transmission does not seem common but can probably occur when susceptible animals are infected during pregnancy. It has been demonstrated

The Encephaliozoon cuniculi is an obligate intracellular microsporidian parasite with a highly reduced genome, yet it contains several key components of an actin cytoskeleton. In this study, we characterise the α-actinin-like protein from the parasite to gain insight into its role in actin organisation. The protein contains three domains typical of α-actinins: an N-terminal actin-binding domain and a C-terminal calmodulin-like domain, separated by a rod domain. Gel filtration analysis demonstrated that the recombinant protein formed stable dimers, consistent with the canonical antiparallel α-a

A case of Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection in a rabbitry is reported. After the introduction of new rabbits in 1984, problems arose accompanied by serious losses among rabbits of all ages. Affected animals showed muscular weakness, emaciation, polydipsia and polyuria and died within various periods. Some of the affected animals also showed neurological symptoms. When two animals were examined at autopsy lesions typical of encephalitozoonis were observed: small granulomas in the brain and chronic interstitial nephritis associated with tubular degeneration. Encephalitozoon cuniculi was identif

OBJECTIVE: Microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi has been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in immunosuppressed individuals, such as AIDS patients. The objective of the study was to develop pharmacologically immunosuppressed animals as a model of the natural occurring E. cuniculi infection.
METHODS: Distinct groups of adult Balb-C mice were immunosuppressed with different doses of dexamethasone (Dx, 3 or 5 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneal route - IP) and inoculated with E. cuniculi spores by IP route intraperitoneally. Control groups (inoculated animals but non-immunosuppressed and non- ino

Sera of 30 Swedish homosexual men belonging to the group at risk for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were examined for antibodies against various opportunistic parasites. Antibodies to Encephalitozoon cuniculi were found in 33%, to Pneumocystis carinii in 43%, and to Toxoplasma gondii in 37%. The results indicate that E. cuniculi might be transmitted among homosexual men.

BACKGROUND: Neurological signs, such as head tilt, torticollis, paralysis, and seizures, are common in rabbits. Differential diagnoses include two zoonotic infections caused by the microsporidial fungi Encephalitozoon cuniculi and the apicomplexan protozoa Toxoplasma gondii. Both infections are mainly latent in rabbits but may cause severe or even fatal disease. Although several international studies have reported the seroprevalence of these pathogens in different commercial rabbit populations, similar prevalence studies and risk-factor analyses among family-owned pet rabbits are uncommon and

Experiments were conducted to determine (a) whether mice bearing the single autosomal recessive gene lpr (lymphoproliferation) are more susceptible to encephalitozoonosis than syngeneic mice without the lpr gene and (b) whether infection with Encephalitozoon cuniculi in autoimmune MRL/MPJ mice accelerates and/or exacerbates the development of hypergammaglobulinemia, a manifestation of encephalitozoonosis in dogs and foxes. The results suggested that the lpr gene does not influence susceptibility to murine encephalitozoonosis. Infection with E. cuniculi changed neither the onset nor the severit

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is an obligate intracellular microsporidian parasite that can result in clinical and subclinical infection in many species. In the present study, a serological survey was conducted using samples from 105 horses in the state of New Jersey; 49 of the samples were obtained from clinically abnormal animals. Five or 4.8% of 105 serum samples were found to demonstrate reactivity by ELISA with titers of 1:64 to 1:1,024. One of the samples was obtained from a clinically normal horse. Clinical signs and diagnoses from the other animals included lameness, colic, osteochondritis

Three mongrel dogs, aged 10 months (case 1), 14 months (case 2) and 7.5 years (case 3), were presented because of ophthalmologic disorders of 4 months, 6 months and 7 years duration, respectively. All three dogs were offspring of stray dogs from Hungary and Serbia and had positive serum antibody titres against Encephalitozoon (E.) cuniculi. The two young dogs showed unilateral, the older dog bilateral chronic anterior uveitis with posterior synechia and focal anterior cortical cataract. The fundi that could be evaluated developed focal tapetal hyporeflective lesions in the course of the diseas

100 chicken embryos were examined for naturally occurring infections with Encephalitozoon cuniculi (E.c.). Two embryos were found to be dead, the others were killed at an age of 18 days. Samples from the oesophagus, intestine, liver, kidneys, heart and brain were collected and examined by immunohistochemical methods. E.c. was found in about 40% of the embryos. This microsporidian was observed in all organs, particularly, however, in the oesophagus, intestine, brain and heart. The number of E.c. was significantly larger in the two embryos that died than in the others. The investigations demonst

Newborn cats, pigs, and sheep (3 to 14 days old) and postweanling cats (2.5 months old) that had been inoculated with Gardner feline sarcoma virus and feline leukemia virus at 10 days of age were infected experimentally with a rabbit isolate of the mammalian protozoan parasite Encephalitozoon cuniculi. Infection occurred in all cats and in some sheep, but was questionable in pigs. Brain and kidney were the 2 major target organs in cats. The lesions were compatible with, but less severe than, those of naturally infected cats and other carnivores. Of 13 cats, E cuniculi could be detected morphol

An infection with Septata intestinalis was diagnosed in a 35-year-old AIDS patient without diarrhoea. The diagnosis was based on morphological examinations of a duodenal biopsy specimen. Serum antibodies were detected reacting with spores of Encephalitozoon cuniculi. Spores of S. intestinalis and E. cuniculi stained with Brown Hopps Gram stain showed a red colour (Gram negative) and not a blue/black colour which was described for microsporidian spores in tissue.

Microsporidia causes opportunistic infections in immunosuppressed individuals. Mammals shed these spores of fungi in feces, urine, or respiratory secretions, which could contaminate water and food, thereby reaching the human body and causing infection. The oral route is the most common route of infection, although experiments have demonstrated that intraperitoneal and intravenous routes may also spread infection. Respiratory tract infection, although considered to be possible, has not been reported to date. The present study, therefore, aimed to demonstrate infection with the microsporidia of

Pet rabbits (n = 125) from Southern Italy were submitted to a serological screening for Encephalitozoon cuniculi, using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a carbon immunoassay (CIA). Seventy-eight examined rabbits showed clinical signs suggestive of encephalitozoonosis (head tilt, ataxia, paralysis, cataracts, uveitis, polyuria and polydipsia), whereas 47 were healthy rabbits. Antibodies anti-E. cuniculi were found in 84/125 (67.2%) sera analysed. The results of the chi-squared test showed that sex and health status had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on E. cuniculi seropositivi

BACKGROUND: Encephalitozoon cuniculi is an opportunistic pathogen with significant zoonotic potential, particularly for immunocompromised individuals. However, evidence-based disinfection protocols against its environmentally resistant spores are lacking, leading to potential reliance on suboptimal agents.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish a rigorous, data-driven hierarchy for the efficacy of common chemical disinfectants against E. cuniculi spores by integrating assessments of structural integrity, cellular infectivity, and in vivo dissemination.
METHODS: We employed a multi-modal ap

A 47-day-old black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) kit was found dead in June 2016. Histologic examination revealed pyogranulomatous tubulointerstitial nephritis, pneumonia, and encephalitis, with intralesional microsporidia. Transmission electron microscopic examination showed microsporidia with ultrastructural characteristics consistent with Encephalitozoon spp. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing confirmed the presence of Encephalitozoon cuniculi genotype II. This organism has been reported in other Carnivora (i.e., canids, felids, mustelids, procyonids, otariids). In hum

Microsporidia are ubiquitous, spore-forming, intracellular parasites infecting invertebrates and vertebrates. Some of them are important opportunistic pathogens in humans, including three species of genus Encephalitozoon. Intraspecies genetic variation with a different range of hosts is known in Encephalitozoon cuniculi distinguishing four genotypes. Recently, E. cuniculi is often observed in pet animals, mainly E. cuniculi genotype I in pet rabbits. This study described a fatal encephalitozoonosis in a group of pet rodents Steppe lemmings (Lagurus lagurus). The animals were presented with pro

Rabbits were intrarectally infected with 3 doses (5 x 10(3), 5 x 10(5), and 5 x 10(7] of an obligate intracellular parasite, Encephalitozoon cuniculi, with or without prior colonic lavages. Although chronic administration of enemas seems to interfere to some degree with the intestinal translocation of the parasite, systemic infection was observed in both manipulated and nonmanipulated animals. The animals responded with antibodies of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG isotypes, reflecting the route of infection. They also produced significant amounts of circulating immune complexes composed of IgA

BACKGROUND: Among patients with hip joint endoprosthesis, periprosthetic osteolysis is the most common complication following primary arthroplasty, and subsequent implant loosening is the leading cause of arthroplasty revision. Causes of stability loss, though not always evident, can be mechanical, allergic, or infectious (bacterial and fungal agents) in nature. Microsporidia, widespread opportunistic fungal pathogens that infect most human tissues, are a potential infectious cause of stability loss. Infections caused by Encephalitozoon species-one of the most common microsporidial pathogens i
