Encephalitozoonosis in rabbits.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is an obligatory intracellular microsporidian parasite that can infect a wide range of mammals, including rodents, rabbits, horses, carnivores and humans, in which the organism is known as an opportunistic pathogen of immunocompromised individuals. Nevertheless, the main host for E. cuniculi is the rabbit and infections usually have a sub-clinical course. However, severe disease is recognised in pet rabbits more frequently within the last years. As the central nervous system, the kidney and the eye are predilection organs for the organism, predominant histopathological

Catecholamines and encephalitozoonosis in rabbits.

Twenty four rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus f. domestica) were used to detect specific anti-Encephalitozoon cuniculi antibodies. To identify microsporidian infection, a haemolytic test in agar gel was carried out. Blood samples of animals with and without spontaneous encephalitozoonosis were evaluated, and compared for the presence of epinephrine (EPI), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA). Rabbits infected spontaneously with E. cuniculi had significantly lower levels of catecholamines than healthy animals. This decrease in catecholamines is of special interest because of their role as factor

Encephalitozoonosis in arctic lemmings.

Encephalitozoonosis was identified for the first time in arctic lemmings (Dicrostonyx stevensoni and crosses of D. stevensoni and Dicrostonyx rubricatus). The most common clinical findings were circling, torticollis, posterior paralysis, depression, blindness and death related to parasitic granulomas in many tissues. Granulomas were most frequent in the central nervous system, but were seen in many other tissues throughout the body. Granulomas were characterized by collections of macrophages and varying numbers of lymphocytes and neutrophils with or without necrosis of parenchymal tissue. Most

Encephalitozoonosis in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Twenty-two cases of naturally occurring encephalitozoonosis in squirrel monkeys are reported from breeding colonies of the Delta Regional Primate Research Center, Covington, La. Characteristic foci of granulomatous inflammation and organisms were demonstrated in brains, kidneys, lungs, adrenals, and livers. Vasculitis and perivasculitis were also common lesions in several organs. At least seven cases were congenital while ten others occurred in monkeys less than nine months old. Granulomatous placentitis, previously unreported in any species due to Encephalitozoon cuniculi, was present in one

Experimental encephalitozoonosis in neonatal dogs.

The in vivo infection of neonatal dogs by the microsporidian protozoan parasite, Encephalitozoon cuniculi, was studied. Microscopic examination of tissues from infected animals showed granulomatous nephritis, meningoencephalitis, hepatitis, and pneumonitis. A large component of the inflammatory infiltrate consisted of plasma cells and lymphocytes. In addition, hyperplasia of B-lymphocyte-dependent regions of lymph nodes and erythrophagocytosis were consistently seen in infected dogs. Infected dogs developed lymphocytosis, hypergammaglobulinemia, anti-encephalitozoon antibodies, and an antigen-

Encephalitozoonosis in New Zealand rabbits and potential transmission risk.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a small protozoan parasite in the phylum Microspora. It has been shown to naturally infect several host species, including humans. Encephalitozoonosis is routinely diagnosed in vivo by serological examination or post mortem by histopathology. In a conventional rabbit colony, two animals suddenly showed clinical signs (torticollis and asthenia of limbs). Serum samples of these rabbits were seropositive for E. cuniculi after definitive diagnosis (Toxoplasma gondii and Listeria monocytogenes). The animals in the same breeding facility were also clinical examined, and t

Diabetes mellitus increases the susceptibility to encephalitozoonosis in mice.

Microsporidiosis are diseases caused by opportunistic intracellular fungi in immunosuppressed individuals, as well as in transplanted patients, the elderly and children, among others. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia and decreased T cell response, neutrophil function, humoral immunity failure, increasing the susceptibility to infections. Here, we investigated the susceptibility of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type I diabetic and/or immunosuppressed mice to encephalitozoonosis by Encephalitozoon cuniculi. Microscopically, granulomatous hepatitis, inte

Brain and spinal cord lesions in encephalitozoonosis in mink.

Central nervous system lesions were studied by light microscopy in 43 farmed mink, aged 5 months to 2 1/2 years, with spontaneous encephalitozoonosis and showing cataractous eye changes. Lesions were found in the brain and spinal cord of all animals examined but were generally mild and chronic. The lesions were consistent with those previously described in spontaneous encephalitozoonosis in other carnivores. Parasites in parasitophorous vacuoles and free or phagocytosed in necrotic and granulomatous lesions were demonstrated in animals aged 5 months to 1 year. The occurrence of arterial lesion

Head tilt in rabbits caused by pasteurellosis and encephalitozoonosis.

Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) of non-dwarf (Group A) and dwarf (Group B) strains showing a common clinical sign of head tilt (torticollis) were examined. With 1 exception, all rabbits of group A had otitis and empyema of either one or both middle ears. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from pus and from the nose of all but 1 of these rabbits, and on occasion was also isolated from the brain. By contrast in all dwarf rabbits the presence of the protozoan Encephalitozoon cuniculi was confirmed both histologically and serologically. This parasite did not affect the ears of the animals but rath

Ocular encephalitozoonosis (nosematosis) in blue foxes. Polyarteritis nodosa and cataract.

In young blue foxes an association has previously been established between the protozoon Encephalitozoon (Nosema) cuniculi and generalized arterial lesions of the polyarteritis nodosa type. The same vascular changes are found in the posterior ciliary arteries and their intraocular branches of these foxes. Most of the eyes which are thus affected, have a severe cataract. The parasite can easily be demonstrated both in the arteries and the lenses. It is thought that the Encephalitozoon is the cause of the vascular lesions and the cataract, and that possibly an autoimmune reaction is involved.

Encephalitozoonosis infection in a traditional rabbit farm with neurological manifestations.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi, a zoonotic and opportunistic pathogen, can cause latent infection, especially in lagomorphs. Nowadays, this member of the Eukaryotes has drawn significant attention in the fields of veterinary and public health. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of infection in a New Zealand rabbit farm that has a clinical history of neurological manifestations including head tilt ataxia, aggressiveness, seizures, and circling and rotational movements around the body length axis, but the general conditions and food intake were normal. Blood samples were tak

Brain and spinal cord lesions in encephalitozoonosis in the blue fox.

The central nervous system lesions in encephalitozoonosis were studied in 11 naturally infected blue foxes. Immunohistochemical staining was employed in the demonstration of the parasites and identification of host cells. Consistent findings in acute to subacute stages included granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis and vasculitis, with arterial lesions similar to polyarteritis nodosa. Chronic stages were dominated by arteriosclerosis, perivascular mononuclear infiltrations and gliosis, with less prominent granulomatous reaction. Parasites were almost constantly observed in association with ac

Experimental encephalitozoonosis in the blue fox. Neonatal exposure to the parasite.

Newborn and young pups up to the age of 15 days were exposed to E. cuniculi, either by keeping the pups in cages together with orally inoculated foster-mothers and their offspring, or by oral inoculation with E. cuniculi spores. A majority of pups appeared sero-positive to E. cuniculi with the india-ink immuno-reaction from 35 to 87 days post exposure; spores of E. cuniculi were detected in organs of some of the animals. The non-inoculated pups kept together with the orally inoculated pups became seropositive from 49 to 129 days after the oral inoculations. However, the exposure of newborn and

Encephalitozoonosis in 2 South American Fur Seal (Arctocephalus australis) Pups.

Cerebral and disseminated encephalitozoonosis was diagnosed by histopathology, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry in 2 free-ranging South American fur seal pups found dead at Guafo Island (43°33'S 74°49'W) in southern Chile. In the brain, lesions were characterized by random foci of necrosis with large numbers of macrophages containing numerous microsporidial organisms within parasitophorous vacuoles. In addition, occasional histiocytes loaded with numerous mature and immature microsporidia spores consistent with Encephalitozoon sp were observed in pulmonary alveolar septa, splenic

Encephalitozoonosis in Pet Rabbits: Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, Immunology and Consensus on Clinical Management.

Members of the microsporidial genus Encephalitozoon have the capacity to infect both mammals and birds, and E. cuniculi is most commonly found in rabbits. With a seroprevalence ranging up to 85%, E. cuniculi can be a problem in pet rabbits as well as in food production and laboratory animal science. While most infections are likely subclinical, there are three main clinical presentations: neurological, renal, and ocular. Typical clinical signs including vestibular disease and phacoclastic uveitis may develop with initial or relapsing infection, while renal infection is usually progressive and

First molecular evidence of ocular transmission of Encephalitozoonosis during the intrauterine period in rabbits.

Many reports have been published on the suspected vertical transmission of Encephalitozoon cuniculi; however, prior to 2003, these reports were based on circumstantial evidence, such as histopathological, immunohistochemical, or serological diagnosis of the infection. In 2003, vertical transmission of the parasite was confirmed by detection of E. cuniculi DNA in fetuses with the nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. However, the passage of the parasite to eyes of fetus during the intrauterine stage still requires verification. In the current study, natively infected with parasite s
