The elucidation of the structure and function of the Ca2+(o)-sensing receptor (CaR) has provided important insights into the normal control of Ca2+(o) homeostasis, particularly the key role of the receptor in kidney and parathyroid. Further studies are needed to define more clearly the homeostatic role of the CaR in additional tissues, both those that are involved and those that are uninvolved in systemic Ca2+(o) homeostasis. The availability of the cloned CaR has also permitted documentation of the molecular basis of inherited disorders of Ca2+(o) sensing, including those in which the recepto

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: As ampullary carcinoma originates from four anatomical regions, it may have different behaviors depending on its origin. We documented the presence of endocrine cells found in ampullary carcinoma, and we studied the clinicopathological implications of their presence.
METHODS: We immunohistochemically examined the presence of an endocrine component in 62 surgically resected specimens of ampullary carcinoma, and we studied the clinicopathological differences between endocrine component-positive cases and endocrine component-negative cases.
RESULTS: Endocrine cells were dete

Distribution of endocrine cells in the human oesophagus was studied histochemically. Large amount of endocrine cells was discovered in terminal parts and excretory ducts of the cardial glands. Endocrine cells of the oesophageal cardial glands are represented, at least, by three types: argentaffine, argyrophil in the reactions of Grimelius and Sevier, Munger and argyrophil in the reaction of Grimelius only. The amount of argentaffine cells in the oesophageal cardial glands was observed to be 5 times as large as that of in the gastric cardial glands. The reason is evidently in functional differe

BACKGROUND: Diabetes can be treated by β-cell replacement therapy but the supply of graft material from human donors is too limited to make a significant clinical impact. Substitute β-cells generated from stem cell populations offer a potential source for the large numbers of cells required.
SOURCES OF DATA: Primary peer-reviewed reports of experimental studies.
AREAS OF AGREEMENT: Embryonic stem cells and/or induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are currently the most promising starting populations from which to generate large numbers of β-cells. Differentiation protocols that recapitulate i

It has been suggested by some studies of human and animal lungs that the products of pulmonary endocrine cells, particularly gastrin-releasing peptide, might play a role in fibrogenesis, but more recent detailed studies of fibrotic human lungs have failed to confirm this. We have made a detailed quantitative examination of a series of fibrotic human lungs to see if we could determine whether there was any relationship between endocrine cells and fibrosis. Using immunocytochemistry, we investigated the morphology, content, distribution and number of pulmonary endocrine cells in 15 pairs of fibr

BACKGROUND: When hormones are detected in the serum of patients with bronchial carcinoma they are generally considered to originate from the tumour, but this may be not the only explanation. Pulmonary endocrine cells proliferate in lungs affected by non-neoplastic disease and their products are often demonstrable in the serum. The aim of this study was to examine the pulmonary endocrine systems of a series of tumour-bearing lungs to see whether any changes in them could possibly account for raised levels of pulmonary peptides in the blood.
METHODS: The morphology, number, distribution, and co

Four cases of unusual lesions of endocervix are presented. They were all incidental findings, showing no obvious infiltrative and metastatic properties to attest their malignant nature. Two lesions were entirely confined to the endocervical mucosa. The main characteristics of these proliferative processes thus were an abnormal architecture with branched or small glands, a hypermucinous benign-appearing epithelium of endocervical type, and stromal smooth-muscle. In contrast with normal endocervical mucosa, all lesions contained prominent and variegated endocrine cells. These 4 cases were quite

The presence of argentaffin cells (possibly of endocrine nature) in the human cardiac mucosa has been reported. The nature of these cells has not been characterized further. Biopsies of cardiac mucosa taken immediately distal to esophageal epithelium were studied ultrastructurally and immunohistochemically in seven healthy volunteers. Of 62 ultrastructurally-examined endocrine cells 21 % were enterochromaffin cells (EC) of the gastric type, 13 % were enterochromaffin (EC2) cells, 56% were enterochromaffin-like (ECl) cells and 10 % were D1 cells. All endocrine cells studied were of the "closed"

Communication between adipose and other tissues has been hypothesized since at least the 1940s to be bidirectional. Despite this expectation, early progress was largely limited to adipose tissue's role in metabolism and storage of fatty acids, its development, and its response to endocrine and neural cues. However, efforts of the last decade have identified several molecules that are secreted from adipocytes, apparently for the purpose of signaling to other tissues. Cloning of the mouse obesity gene in 1994 is perhaps the most famous impetus for recognition that adipocytes are active in the re

Cancer stem-like cells are a subpopulation of self-renewing cells that are more resistant to chemotherapy and radiation therapy than the other surrounding cancer cells. The cancer stem cell model predicts that only a subset of cancer cells possess the ability to self-renew and produce progenitor cells that can reconstitute and sustain tumor growth. Evidence supporting the existence of cancer stem-like cells in the thyroid, pituitary, and in other endocrine tissues is rapidly accumulating. These cells have been studied using specific biomarkers including: CD133, CD44, Nestin, Nanog, and aldehyd

The presence of enterostatin, a pentapeptide acting as a potential satiety signal in rats, was investigated in rat intestine by immunocytochemical methods. Using antibodies directed against the C-terminal part of enterostatin, the peptide was identified in endocrine cells in the antral part of the stomach and in the small intestine of rat. The immunoreactive cells were more frequent in the antrum and duodenum and became gradually fewer towards the distal small intestine. In some of the labeled endocrine cells, a coexistence of enterostatin with serotonin was revealed by immunocytochemical doub

This review offers a summary of an increasingly complex literature which exists on the specific endocrine control of granulosa cell steroidogenesis. Further developments in cell biology will ultimately aid our greater understanding of pathophysiological regulation of the ovarian events underlying the human menstrual cycle. While we are beginning to unravel many of the important operational facets of this integrated process, our knowledge is still limited. Important questions remain to many clinical syndromes involving altered ovarian function, for example primary ovarian failure, polycystic ov

Lung sections from 22 infants and children who died of noncardiopulmonary diseases (control) and from 12 infants with hyaline membrane disease/bronchopulmonary dysplasia (HMD/BPD) were immunostained for bombesin (BOM), calcitonin (CT), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), leu-enkephalin (ENK), and serotonin (5HT). The numbers of immunoreactive cells per millimeter airway epithelial length were counted and determined by morphometry. In lungs from the control group, BOM-immunoreactive (IR) solitary cells (SCs) were numerous at the bronchiolar level, and remained so for 4 to 7 months after bir

Pathological changes of gastric endocrine cells are reviewed. The lesions are subdivided according to the type of mucosa in which they originate. Hyperplasias of fundic endocrine cells, probably related to the patient's concomitant hypergastrinemia, were found in Zollinger Ellison syndrome and in chronic atrophic gastritis. They may evolve into carcinoid tumors. Typical and atypical forms of fundic carcinoids have been described, usually without specific clinical syndrome. Antral gastrin G cells proliferate in achlorhydric, hypergastrinemia patients while their involvement in peptic ulcer dise

The antral endocrine cells were investigated in nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice by means of immunohistochemistry, image analysis, and radioimmunoassays (RIA). As controls BALB/CJ mice of the same age and sex as the NOD mice were used. The number of gastrin- and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells was significantly decreased in both prediabetic and diabetic mice. There was no statistical difference between the NOD mice and controls regarding the serotonin-immunoreactive cells. Somatostatin levels as revealed by RIA in the antrum of both prediabetic and diabetic NOD mice were lower than those of the

Pulmonary endocrine cells containing bombesin or calcitonin have been identified in human lungs by the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method. The numbers of such cells were greatly increased in patients with plexogenic pulmonary arteriopathy whether that condition was associated with primary pulmonary hypertension or with pulmonary hypertension from intracardiac shunts. The numbers of endocrine cells tended to be increased, but to a lesser extent in patients with pulmonary hypertension and medial hypertrophy of the muscular pulmonary arteries in the absence of plexogenic arteriopathy. Increased num
