Endodermal sinus tumor.

Three cases of Endodermal Sinus Tumor are presented and its difference from tumors of the mesonephroma type and associations with the embryoma are pointed out. The three cases were "pure" types and the patients died within 5 months in spite of surgical treatment and chemotherapy. Autopsy showed extensive involvement of peritoneum, diaphragm and pleura.

Vaginal endodermal sinus tumor.

Malignant germ cell tumors are rare tumors of childhood accounting less than 3% of pediatric malignancies, and endodermal sinus tumor (EST) is the most common histological subtype. The vagina is an extremely rare site for germ cell tumors (GCT). A one-year female was admitted with history of bleeding per vagina. She had pallor and a mass was palpable anteriorly on rectal examination. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed a tumor mass at the junction of cervix and vagina and biopsy was suggestive of a vaginal EST. The serum alpha fetoprotein (AFP) was elevated. She underwent vaginohysterectom

Endodermal sinus tumor in children.

Malignant germ cell tumors account for about 3% of neoplasms in children, and endodermal sinus tumor (EST) is the most common histological subtype. The authors reviewed 22 years' experience (at their institution) in the management of 37 patients with this tumor. Fifteen of them (41%) had a sacrococcygeal primary, 10 had a testicular tumor (27%), 6 had an ovarian tumor (16%), 3 had a vaginal tumor (8%) and 3 had tumors at other sites (8%). Seven (19%) patients presented with metastatic disease, primarily pulmonary. The serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level was elevated in all cases tested. The in

Metastatic endodermal sinus tumor: CT appearances.

A one-week-old boy had undergone resection of a sacrococcygeal benign cystic teratoma. At the age of 12 months, he had a serum alpha-fetoprotein level of 139,000 IU/ml and a recurrent pelvic mass which was removed, and the microscopic examination revealed endodermal sinus tumor. Postoperatively, massively enlarged inguinal lymph nodes and abdominal distention developed. Computerized tomography displayed enlarged inguinal lymph nodes, metastatic lesions in the liver, and a pelvic recurrent mass. He received BEP (bleomycin, etoposide, cisplatin) chemotherapy regimen, and a complete remission was

Endodermal sinus tumor of the mediastinum.

Endodermal sinus tumor (EST) of the mediastinum is a rare germ-cell neoplasm affecting mainly young adult males. Ten patients with EST were treated with a multimodality approach that included surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. All patients had relapses after achieving a transient response except one who is still in complete remission more than five years following the diagnosis of the disease. Optimal therapy for this neoplasm has yet to be discovered. The disease is a subset of extragonadal germ cell tumors which appears to be lethal in most cases, particularly when the primary tumor is

Primary orbital endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac tumor).

Endodermal sinus tumor, or yolk sac tumor, is the most common malignant neoplasm of germ cell origin and usually occurs in infant testes or ovaries. On rare occasions, the tumor may arise from extragonadal sites, including sacrococcygeal region, uterus, vagina, prostate, retroperitoneum, liver, mediastinum, pineal gland, and third ventricle. The orbit is an unusual location for the primary development of this neoplasm. We report the case of a girl with primary orbital endodermal sinus tumor who was managed with exenteration and chemotherapy with the result of a disease-free survival of 9 years

Malignant sacrococcygeal yolk sac (endodermal sinus) tumor.

We report a 2 1/2 years old female child who presented with Malignant Sacrococcygeal Yolk sac (Endodermal Sinus) tumor as presacral mass with ulceration of overlying skin. Her ultrasonography (USG)abdomen revealed a huge presecral mass with irregular margins extending in to the pelvis, pushing the rectum antero-laterally. CT scanning of abdomen confirmed USG finding with out enlargement of retroperitoneal lymph nodes and no involvement of the liver. Serum AFP was abnormally elevated. The tumor was excised along with Coccyx in-toto through posterior approach dividing the sacrum and 3-Drugs (VAC

Primary endodermal sinus tumor of the omentum.

Endodermal sinus tumor (EST) is a rare neoplasm which usually arises in the testis or ovary. But extragonadal EST is well recognized and may arise in a wide array of sites such as the mediastinum, vagina, and brain. We report a case of primary EST of the omentum and to our knowledge it is the first case of omental EST in the literature. A 45-year-old woman with a history of abdominal distension was treated with total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and infracolic omentectomy, followed by four cycles of BEP (bleomycin, etoposide, cisplatin) combination chemotherapy.

Congenital endodermal sinus tumor of the penis.

Congenitally occurring endodermal sinus tumors are very rare and frequently occur in association with teratomatous growths. The most common location for these tumors in infancy is the gonads. Tumors of the penis are rare in any age group. As far as we know, this tumor has never been reported in the penis. A 17-month-old baby boy was noted to have a pimple-like lesion at the corona of the glans penis. This was stationary and ignored for a year. At this point, the lump began increasing in size. A further delay of 6 months elapsed before a definitive diagnosis was made. This case emphasizes that

Endodermal sinus tumor arising in the endometrium.

A case of primary endodermal sinus tumor (EST) of the endometrium in a 28-year-old woman is described. EST has been reported to arise in several extragonadal sites, but to the authors' knowledge this is the first documented instance of origin in the endometrium. The histologic study is verified by the detection of alpha-fetoprotein in the tumor by an immunoperoxidase-peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique reported here. Displaced germinal cells, abnormal ovum, and residual fetal tissues are considered as possible origins of the neoplasia.

Primary intracranial endodermal sinus tumor. Case report.

Endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac carcinoma), a germinal neoplasm, is rarely primary in the cranial cavity. The authors add a third case with the tumor located in the anterior third ventricular (suprasellar) region to the literature. Seventeen previously reported intracranial cases, mostly in the pineal region, are briefly reviewed.

Endodermal sinus tumor of the paranasal sinuses.

BACKGROUND: We report a rare case of endodermal sinus tumor (EST) of the paranasal sinus in a 59-year-old man with a 6-week history of nasal obstruction. METHODS AND RESULTS: High-resolution MRI showed a right nasoethmoid mass with obstructive changes in the sphenoid, frontal, and right maxillary sinuses and orbital and intracranial extension. Histologic analysis showed 2 distinct histologic features: poorly differentiated carcinoma and EST. Immunohistochemical studies showed strong keratin staining in both components and restricted positivity of alpha-fetoprotein in the endodermal sinus-like

Endodermal sinus tumor: report of 12 cases.

Twelve cases of endodermal sinus tumor were reviewed. There were 10 females and 2 males with a median age at presentation of 3 years. The primary site was sacrococcygeal in 4 patients, vaginal in 3, retroperitoneal in 2, and testicular, ovarian and left chest wall in one each. The diagnosis rested on histopathological examination and elevation of serum alfa feto protein levels (median 46,200 ng/ml). Two patients had Stage I disease, 9 had Stage III and one had Stage IV disease. Patients were managed by surgery and chemotherapy (BVP regime). All patients on BVP (even those lost at later stages)

Endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac tumor) of the orbit.

The endodermal sinus tumor is a malignant germ cell neoplasm that usually arises in gonads, but on rare occasion occurs in extragonadal locations. Five tumors of the orbit, which by light microscopy displayed features characteristic of gonadal endodermal sinus tumor, were tested for the presence of alpha fetoprotein using paraffin-embedded tissue and an immunoperoxidase technique. Each tumor contained intracytoplasmic alpha fetoprotein. Review of the clinical histories revealed that orbital endodermal sinus tumors differ from other extragonadal endodermal sinus tumors in that they occur at a y

Therapy of endodermal sinus tumor of the ovary.

Endodermal sinus tumor of the ovary can be differentiated histologically and immunohistochemically from ovarian embryonal cell carcinoma. A case report of a patient with endodermal sinus tumor is presented in which a long-term remission was achieved by unilateral adnexectomy and combination chemotherapy. Review of the current literature indicates that tumor removal followed by combination chemotherapy with vincristine, actinomycin D, and cyclophosphamide is the most effective method of therapy for this highly malignant ovarian neoplasm. The addition of hysterectomy with contralateral ovariecto

A rare germ-cell tumor site: vaginal endodermal sinus tumor.

Malignant germ-cell tumors (MGCT) are rare tumors of childhood accounting for less than 3% of pediatric malignancies. Endodermal sinus tumor (EST) forms the most common histologic subtype of MGCT. The vagina is an extremely rare site for GCTs. A 9-month-old female was admitted with a short history of vaginal bleeding, a mass protruding from the vagina, and difficulty in passing urine. She was pale, the bladder was full, and a mass was palpable anteriorly on rectal examination. Ultrasound showed an ovoid, hyperechoic mass posterior to the bladder. A biopsy revealed a vaginal EST. Gastric adenocarcinoma with features of endodermal sinus tumor.

Extragonadal germ cell tumors are rare. The most common sites for EGGCTs are in midline locations such as the mediastinum, retroperitoneum and pineal gland. These tumors rarely present in the stomach. We describe here a case where a middle aged man presented with typical symptoms of gastric cancer. After extensive workup, which included blood work, CT abdomen scan, upper endoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound, the patient was diagnosed with gastric cancer. However, due to very high blood levels of alpha-fetoprotein, the specimen was sent for special histochemical staining, which demonstrated tha
