Endolimax nana is a commensal protozoan of the colon. We report a case of chronic urticaria associated with E. nana in a 34-year-old Italian woman. The patient suffered from abdominal pain, diarrhoea and weight loss. The disease appeared after a trip to Vietnam. Laboratory examinations showed mild blood eosinophilia. Three coproparasitological examinations were positive for cysts of E. nana. The patient was successfully treated with two courses of metronidazole (2 g/day for 10 days each). No antihistamines were used. Three coproparasitological examinations, carried out at the end of the therap

This is the first report on the ultrastructure of the Endolimax nana cyst. These cysts are mostly ovoid in shape and have a distinct cyst wall measuring 80 nm. The nuclear membrane is without pores or associated chromatin deposits. The cytoplasm does not have mitochondria or a Golgi apparatus but shows elongated tubular structures made up of a double row of ribosome-like particles. The nature and function of this structure is not known, but it appears to be characteristic of this species and has not been reported from any other intestinal ameba.

We studied the cyst production of 340 asymptomatic carriers with single or mixed infections of Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar, Endolimax nana and Entamoeba coli. It was found that the main source of transmission was a small group of 37 (10.9%) carriers who produced 70.2% of all cysts. Gender was an important factor for cyst production of Ent. histolytica/Ent. dispar, since males produced 6-fold more cysts than females. Females produced 'large' (13-15 microns) Ent. histolytica/Ent. dispar cysts and males small (10-12 microns) cysts when concentration was > 2000 cysts/g. When concentrati

A 54-year-old female patient with a history of depressive disorder, previously treated and not currently on regular medication, lives in a rural area and regularly consumes untreated well water. She presented with a one-month history of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and tenesmus. Laboratory tests only revealed numerous Endolimax nana cysts in her stool, and endoscopic evaluation did not show significant findings. The patient's complete resolution of symptoms was achieved through the combined effect of metronidazole treatment and discontinuation of untreated well water consumption. Endolimax nana i

BACKGROUND: Endolimax nana is a common intestinal archamoebid within Evosea (Amoebozoa), alongside genera such as Entamoeba, Iodamoeba, and Mastigamoeba. Despite its frequent colonization of humans, it has received limited attention as a presumed non-pathogenic commensal, and its genetic diversity and host-associated distribution remain poorly resolved. Here, we define the molecular diversity, subtype structure, and host-associated distribution of E. nana.
METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were conducted in Wainyapu Village, Sumba Island, Indonesia. A total of 315 stool samples were collected

Systemic amoebiasis of Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis is caused by Endolimax piscium Constenla, Padrós & Palenzuela, 2014 a cryptic parasitic member of the Archamoebae whose epidemiology is yet unknown. To test whether the parasite can be transmitted horizontally, an experimental trial by cohabitation between non-infected and infected fish was designed. Transmission of the parasite from naturally infected to healthy fish was confirmed in the experiment, with the water as the most likely route of infection. Under the conditions of the study, the infection process was remarkably slow, as par

Systemic amoebiasis of sole is caused by Endolimax piscium, a cryptic parasitic archamoeba whose epidemiology and pathogeny are yet unknown. To establish reliable detection methods for this parasite, a battery of molecular diagnostic tools (ISH, PCR and qPCR) were developed and evaluated with a panel of clinical samples from symptomatic diseased fish and from apparently normal animals of different stocks. As there is neither enough background information on the epidemiology of the disease nor a validated reference method, comparison of tests used a composite reference method approach. The ISH

Recent studies have shown how intestinal parasites can modulate gut microbiota. This observation is not surprising since the human intestinal lumen, like any other niche, is a battlefield of microbial competition, and Eukaryotes can affect bacterial populations. Intestinal pathogenic protist has been associated with reshaping the microbial community structure; however, the interactions between the colonic bacterial communities and parasites like Blastocystis spp., Entamoeba coli, and Endolimax nana have been poorly studied. In this work, we studied the distal intestinal bacterial microbiota of

Certain Desulfovibrio sp. (anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria) are indigenous to swine cecum and colon, which are also common habitats for parasitic amoebae such as Entamoeba polecki and Entamoeba suis. In this study, we evaluated the growth-promoting effects of D. desulfuricans co-cultured with Escherichia coli (DH5α) and its products [e.g., hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and certain iron-sulfide (FeS) compounds] using Robinson's medium, on the 4 amoeba isolates from swine-Entamoeba polecki subtype (ST)-1, E. polecki ST-3, Entamoeba suis, and Endolimax sp., and, consequently, a continuous culture sy

Oil of Mediterranean oregano Oreganum vulgare was orally administered to 14 adult patients whose stools tested positive for enteric parasites, Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba hartmanni and Endolimax nana. After 6 weeks of supplementation with 600 mg emulsified oil of oregano daily, there was complete disappearance of Entamoeba hartmanni (four cases), Endolimax nana (one case), and Blastocystis hominis in eight cases. Also, Blastocystis hominis scores declined in three additional cases. Gastrointestinal symptoms improved in seven of the 11 patients who had tested positive for Blastocystis homin

The rapid progress made in both theoretical and practical fields in laboratory medicine, in general, and in microbiological diagnostic procedures, in particular, have also led to a significant enlargement of, and improvement in laboratory diagnosis of amoebic infections in man. In all intestinal infections with Entamoeba histolytica the demonstration of the parasite is absolutely essential, but is facilitated nowadays by the great improvement in technical conditions. Immunodiagnostic methods have become of great importance in all cases of extraintestinal manifestation of parasite. By the combi

BACKGROUND: Application of next-generation sequencing (NGS) to genomic DNA extracted from sewage offers a unique and cost-effective opportunity to study the genetic diversity of intestinal parasites. In this study, we used amplicon-based NGS to reveal and differentiate several common luminal intestinal parasitic protists, specifically Entamoeba, Endolimax, Iodamoeba, and Blastocystis, in sewage samples from Swedish treatment plants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Influent sewage samples were subject to gradient centrifugation, DNA extraction and PCR-based amplification using three primer pairs design

It is known that infections caused by intestinal protozoa and helminths affect over 3.5 million people worldwide. In this case report, a patient with complaints of stomach ache for a long time who received thermal treatment is presented. During this thermal treatment, diarrhoea occurred and multiparasitism was diagnosed with two helminths; pseudoparasitism and multiprotozoa, simultaneously. Stool samples were collected from the patient on three consecutive days and one day after the treatment. All of the samples were prepared with formalin-ether sedimentation techniques after macroscopic and d

Cultured stocks of Entamoeba hartmanni, Endolimax nana, Iodamoeba buetschlli and Dientamoeba fragilis were compared with the four Entamoeba histolytical groups already described (SARGEAUNT et al., 1978), by the electrophoretic patterns of three enzymes: glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI), phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and L-malate: NADP+ oxidoreductase (oxalacetate-decarboxylating) (ME). All the species were easily distinguished by their characteristic patterns.

Intestinal parasites are a constant public health problem in the Amazon region, with a high prevalence of cases related to poor sanitary conditions. We investigated the sociodemographic and seasonal factors associated with human intestinal parasite infections in an area of the Western Amazon, Brazil, from September 2017 to August 2019. Data were collected using a database available at the Diagnostic Support Centre (Centro de Apoio ao Diagnóstico, CAD) of the Municipality of Rio Branco, on positive diagnoses for intestinal parasites. Among the 53,200 samples analysed, 18.3% (n = 9712) were posi

The aim of the research was to determine the prevalence of non-pathogenic protozoa circulating in the human population of Slovakia. We particularly focused on the socially deprived areas with poor sanitation conditions, as they are one of the factors affecting the transmission of these infections. Within this study, 2760 people were coprologically screened for the presence of protozoan cysts. The analyzed group comprised 1173 men and 1587 women from different regions of Slovakia. The total prevalence (2.03%) of non-pathogenic protozoa species was determined. The prevalence of Entamoeba coli wa

This paper describes a method for the detection of Entamoeba histolytica antigens in stool samples using a multi-layer ELISA. The method is sensitive and specific, showing no interference with other intestinal parasites, e.g. E. coli, E. hartmanni, Endolimax nana, Iodamoeba buetschlii, Hymenolepis nana, Giardia lamblia, Trichomonas and Ascaris. The method provides a rapid and simple screening assay for E. histolytica infections and should assist in diagnosis and epidemiological studies of the disease.
