Endosulfan, an organochlorine (OC) insecticide, is a widely used agricultural pesticide, despite its life threatening toxic effects. In this review, the pharmacokinetics of endosulfan, mechanism of endosulfan toxicity, clinical presentations and management, histopathological findings, and toxicological analysis are described, in addition to its environmental toxicity. The toxic effects of endosulfan can affect many organs and systems presenting in a wide array of signs and symptoms. Although termed a restricted OC-classed pesticide, it continues to be used, especially in the developing world,

We are reporting a case of endosulfan poisoning, admitted in a state of altered consciousness, vomiting, and seizure. The diagnosis was based on history, physical examination and positive reports from toxicological screening. After 8 hrs of admission, a sudden rise in EtCO(2), respiratory rate, heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature was noted. Masseter spasm was there and patient's elbow/knees could not be bent upon manipulation. Caffeine halothane contraction test later confirmed it to be malignant hyperthermia (MH). We suggest that if there is a sudden rise in body temperature, sti

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study is to identify the clinical profile of endosulfan poisoning and also to recognise any biochemical parameters which indicate clinical or subclinical dysfunction of organs so that the offending agent can be easily identified in a given case of poisoning and appropriate treatment instituted promptly.
METHODS: Forty four individuals who consumed food which was accidentally contaminated by endosulfan in a rural area were the subjects of the present study. Except the one who died, rest 43 were examined by the authors. A details history, regarding the item of f

The volatile and soil loss profiles of six agricultural pesticides were measured for 20 days following treatment to freshly tilled soil at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. The volatile fluxes were determined using the Theoretical Profile Shape (TPS) method. Polyurethane foam plugs were used to collect the gas-phase levels of the pesticides at the TPS-defined critical height above a treated field. Surface-soil (0-8 cm) samples were collected on each day of air sampling. The order of the volatile flux losses was trifluralin > alpha-endosulfan > chlorpyrifos > metolachlor > atrazine >

We describe a 26-year-old female patient, who had attempted suicide with Endosulfan, and who presented to the Emergency Department with status epilepticus. She subsequently developed hypotension refractory to inotropes, intravascular hemolysis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), metabolic acidosis and, finally, cardiac arrest and death. Endosulfan is a chlorinated insecticide that causes central nervous system hyperstimulation. It is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, skin, and respiratory tract, and leads to nausea, vomiting, paraesthesia, giddiness, convulsion, coma, respir

Endosulfan is a widely used insecticide that is associated with a high fatality rate in humans when ingested accidentally or with the aim of suicide. However, the literature concerning human endosulfan exposure is limited to case reports. Thus, we sought to 1) describe the clinical features of patients with acute endosulfan poisoning and 2) identify independent factors to predict patients' outcome. Fifty-two patients who presented with acute endosulfan poisoning between January 2001 and January 2007 were enrolled in this retrospective study. Sixteen (30.7%) of the 52 patients died, and 48 pati

BACKGROUND: Endosulfan is widely used in insect control and is absorbed by both humans and animals through the intestinal tract, the lungs, and the skin. Organochlorine insecticides are highly toxic compounds that are responsible for a number of severe intoxications worldwide, with several deaths. A 9-year analysis by one of Turkey's poison control centers reported that pesticide intoxications accounted for 8.8% of 25,572 poisoning calls, with 80.3% of them relating to insecticides and 19.7% concerning rodenticides.
CASE REPORTS: We present two cases of unintentional exposure to endosulfan, o

There is experimental evidence of adverse effects of endosulfan on the male reproductive system, but there are no human data. Therefore, we undertook a study to examine the relationship between environmental endosulfan exposure and reproductive development in male children and adolescents. The study population was composed of 117 male schoolchildren (10-19 years of age) of a village situated at the foothills of cashew plantations, where endosulfan had been aerially sprayed for more than 20 years, and 90 comparable controls with no such exposure history. The study parameters included recording

Two cattle died acutely after being sprayed for lice control with a cyclodiene organochlorine insecticide, endosulfan, not labelled for use in cattle. Three other cattle became acutely ill, but survived after symptomatic therapy and removal of the insecticide from their skin and prevention of enterohepatic circulation. These cases illustrated the risk of acute toxicosis when organochlorine insecticides are used off-label and the potential for illegal tissue and milk residues.

CONTEXT: We investigated the effects of endosulfan intoxication on pituitary functions in three patients.
METHODS: This is an observational case series including three patients with endosulfan intoxication. Patients were evaluated 3 months after the acute event.
RESULTS: Based on the baseline hormonal values and dynamic endocrine tests, one patient had hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis impairment and was diagnosed as ACTH deficiency (peak cortisol level was found 13.12 μg/dl after low dose ACTH stimulation test), and another one had GH-IGF-I axis impairment and was diagnosed as GH deficienc

INTRODUCTION: Organochloride insecticides are chlorinated cyclic hydrocarbons having molecular weights in the range of 300-550 Da. Case series of endosulfan poisoning are extremely rare in the literature. We report 23 cases of endosulfan poisoning.
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients with endosulfan poisoning presenting to our emergency department from January to December 2005. The data were collected from clinical records and laboratory files.
RESULTS: On admission, initial symptoms were nausea and vomiting in 17 patients (73.9 percent), seizures in five patients (21.7 perce

The possible reproductive adverse effects of the pesticide endosulfan on male offspring rats exposed in utero and during lactation were investigated. Dams were treated orally with 0, 0.5 or 1.5 mg of endosulfan/kg 21 days prior to mating, during the mating, pregnancy and lactation. Maternal and reproductive outcome data and male sexual development landmarks (testis descent and preputial separation) were assessed. Reproductive endpoints of the male offspring were examined at adulthood: sex organ weights, daily sperm production, spermatid number, sperm transit, sperm morphology and testosterone

Dietary exposures to food pollutants such as mycotoxin(s) or pesticide(s) are most significant due to their adverse effects on the production and reproduction in animals and the human population. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the teratogenic potential of citrinin (CIT) and endosulfan either alone or in combination in pregnant rats during gestational days 6-20. Endosulfan (1 mg kg(-1) body weight, by oral intubation) and CIT (10 mg kg(-1) feed, through diet) when administered either alone or in combination in pregnant rats caused significant teratogenic effects in the deve

BACKGROUND: Organochlorine insecticides are highly toxic compounds that are responsible for a number of severe intoxications worldwide with several deaths. Despite their widespread use in agriculture during the 1940s to 1960s and the well-known signs and symptoms of intoxication, the clinical picture in case of poisoning varies. We report two cases of acute intentional endosulfan intoxication with cerebral edema and cardiac failure.
CASE REPORTS: Both cases developed life-threatening signs like epileptic state, respiratory insufficiency and hemodynamic instability soon after ingestion. The su

Endosulfan is an organochloride insecticide extensively used in several countries to protect crops from pests. As several studies indicate that endosulfan can affect human and animal development, the aim of this study was to analyse whether sperm parameters and the process of chromatin decondensation could be altered by endosulfan in mice sperm. Spermatozoa from cauda epididymis were obtained from mature male mice and incubated in the presence of two commercial formulations (CFs) of endosulfan (Master® and Zebra Ciagro®) or the active ingredient (AI) alone. A significant decrease in the percen

OBJECTIVE: Endosulfan, an organochlorine pesticide, consists of two isomers (α-Endosulfan and β-Endosulfan) and a primary metabolite, Endosulfan sulfate (END-SO4). Due to its pervasive environmental contamination and harmful effects-such as neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and reproductive toxicity in humans-END was included in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (Annex A) in 2011, leading to its prohibition in many regions. The toxic effects of END have been extensively studied, but the specific mechanism of its lung injury remains unknown. This study explores how α/

The toxicity of the organochlorine pesticide endosulfan to macroinvertebrate assemblages was tested using a system of 24 artificial streams. In separate experiments, the effects of 12- and 48-h exposure to aqueous endosulfan were assessed. No-observed-effect concentrations (NOEC) for endosulfan on macroinvertebrate assemblages were 8.69 and 1.00 microg/L for the 12- and 48-h exposure studies, respectively. In both studies, changes were driven by reduced abundances of the mayfly, Jappa kutera. Algal blooms occurred in the 48-h exposure experiment in streams that received the 6.87 or 30.70 micro

Sorption of alpha-endosulfan by kaolinite and montmorillonite alone and in the presence of sorbed and dissolved humic acid (HA) was investigated (pH 8 and 25 degrees C). Three types of HA, Elliot soil HA (EHA), Peat HA (PHA), and Summit Hill HA (SHHA), were used to represent typical humic substances found in soils. For sorption of HA by either mineral, Freundlich sorption coefficient (K(f)) values appeared to decrease in the order of EHA > PHA > SHHA, which followed increasing polarity (expressed as the O/C atomic ratio) and decreasing percent-carbon content. For both clays, sorption of alpha-
