PURPOSE: To evaluate intraocular pressure after instillation and eventual removal of silicone oil in patients undergoing pars plana vitrectomy combined with silicone oil endotamponade.
METHODS: The study included 198 patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil endotamponade (5,000 centistoke viscosity), in whom silicone oil was removed and in whom follow-up after oil removal was at least 3 months. All patients were operated on by one of two surgeons.

An aphakic patient with severe chronic hypotony had an alternative treatment of a traumatic cyclodialysis cleft: a 3-port pars plana vitrectomy, cryotherapy of the cleft, and fluid-gas exchange with subsequent supine positioning. The therapeutic principle was mechanical apposition of the detached ciliary muscle to the scleral spur by the gas bubble and scar induction by cryotherapy. Intraocular pressure increased to within normal ranges, and visual acuity improved over a 15 month follow-up.

PURPOSE: To report novel surgical approaches to the management of persistent hypotony after cyclodialysis.
METHODS: Retrospective review of the medical records of six eyes of six patients with persistent hypotony after traumatic cyclodialysis. The diagnosis accuracy of cyclodialysis was documented by ultrasound biomicroscopy in five patients. The other one underwent an anterior segment optical coherence tomography. The authors performed pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil-assisted endotamponade in four patients. The remaining eyes underwent a gas tamponade after pars plana vitrectomy.

The use of perfluoro-n-octane (PFnO) for extended endotamponade in an infant with X-linked retinoschisis and complex tractional retinal detachments associated with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) was reported. The patient had undergone multiple vitrectomy surgeries with silicone oil tamponade. After extensive retinectomy, slippage of the retina produced folds that were flattened under extended PFnO tamponade. The retinas of both eyes remained anatomically reattached 11 months after exchange of PFnO for silicone oil.

Silicone oil as endotamponade in cases with attached retina is only indicated in a few very selected cases. These are cases with a high risk of intravitreal hemorrhage and a need for quick visual rehabilitation. We examined 23 patients, who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil filling. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of preoperative intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) (Avastin; Genentech, South San Francisco, CA) injection on the choice of endotamponade at the end of surgery in patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for diabetic tractional retinal detachment (DTRD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-eight patients who had DTRD with macular involvement and underwent PPV by a single surgeon from January 2012 to May 2015 were included. Complete ophthalmological examinations were evaluated at the baseline and during the postoperative follow-up period.

We conducted an expert-led consensus to develop recommendations on the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-containing ocular endotamponades (OEs) in vitreoretinal surgery, aiming to promote a more sustainable surgical practice. We used a modified Delphi methodology with panel consisting of fourteen vitreoretinal surgeons and five representatives of companies involved in OEs production and marketing. Based on a literature review and the latest updates on European Union's PFAS restriction proposal, the facilitator prepared a list of statements on PFAS-containing OEs currently used.
