The Medical Examination of Enslaved Persons Through the East and West Mediterranean Between the Fifteenth and Seventeenth Centuries.

The medical examination of slaves by early modern physicians and surgeons is a complex and, to date, under-researched area. Even though evidence of slave examination practices has been attested to ever since antiquity, specific criteria for physically examining slaves can first be found in mediaeval sources from regions in which the Arab cultural prevailed. Consequently, it has been falsely assumed that such practices were the exclusive domain of Arab medical practitioners. From the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries onwards, specific passages can be traced in medical texts from the Western c

Trauma and perceived social rejection among Yazidi women and girls who survived enslavement and genocide.

BACKGROUND: In August 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a terrorist organization, attacked the Yazidi's ancestral homeland in northwestern Iraq. Among other atrocities, they abducted thousands of women and girls and traded many of them into sexual slavery. The aim of this study is to determine the mental health of women and girl survivors of these events in relation to enslavement and experiences with genocide-related events, as well as perceived social rejection in their community. METHODS: Between February and July 2017, trained local assessors interviewed a sample of 416 Ya

#SayHerName: Should Obstetrics and Gynecology Reckon with the Legacy of JM Sims?

Dr. James Marion Sims has been heralded as the "father of modern gynecology" for his groundbreaking surgical technique to repair post-partum vesicovaginal fistulas (VVF); however, the ethical concerns around his inhumane practices and the contributions of the enslaved women he refined his technique on are rarely recognized. Acknowledging the personal sacrifice of the enslaved women and addressing the truth behind the immoral practices of Sims, encourages reconciliation of the race-based medical atrocities of the past and sets the tone for moral, more equitable medical care moving forward.

Slavery as a process of maintaining extreme inequality.

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden called for further cross-cultural and quantitative research to understand the mechanisms under their egalitarianism framework. Studying the socio-ecological factors that favour egalitarian processes or inequality and slavery maps the same spectrum of individual autonomy from two ends. Including slavery in the analysis' scope is consistent with their paradigm and complements their approach.

Measures of depression, generalized anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorders amongst Yazidi female survivors of ISIS slavery and violence.

BACKGROUND: In 2014 the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) undertook a systematic and deliberate campaign against minority groups and non-Sunni Muslim communities. Amongst some of the greatest atrocities were those targeted towards Yazidi communities and in particular their women. The mental health outcomes of those women held in captivity requires investigation. This study sought to examine and compare levels of general psychological distress, depression, generalized anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and self-reported suicidal thoughts and behaviors amongst Yazidi women held i

Performance and making material histories of racialising violence in medicine.

This article argues that gynaecology has historically understood Black women's reproductive organs as a site of resource extraction, not healing and that contemporary performance offers a way to make the power relations entailed in this abstract visible. The histories of the transatlantic slave trade and gynaecology are intertwined and inform how the medical system interacts with Black women today. 'Father of gynaecology' and 19th-century American physician J. Marion Sims (1813-1883) was dependent on slavery in order to conduct experiments on enslaved Black women's reproductive organs-notably

In arms and on slides: slavery-related interests in the dissemination of smallpox vaccine in Brazil and Angola, 1804-1810.

This article discusses the intersections between vaccination and slavery in colonial Brazil, highlighting the arrival of the smallpox vaccine in Bahia and its spread to other regions of the Portuguese Empire including its holdings in Africa. We highlight the story of enslaved boys, who were primarily inoculated and vaccinated between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, through analysis of bibliographical and documentary sources that illustrate the actions of historical figures such as Felisberto Caldeira Brant, Francisco da Cunha Menezes and Francisco Ignácio Sequeira Nobre. Forcing an Effortless Stance: The Lived Body in Social Anxiety Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The fear of scrutiny central in social anxiety disorder (SAD) points to a problem of the interpersonally perceivable body. Whereas the predominant cognitive-behavioral (CBT) account of the disorder understands this as a problem of excessive self-focused attention, the phenomenological literature reveals it as a sign of a fundamental transformation of body experience. The lived body absent from experience becomes the object body at the forefront of it. The present paper contributes to this literature by refining and grounding these notions in first-person descriptions of concrete

Finger coordination in persons with Down syndrome: atypical patterns of coordination and the effects of practice.

The study addresses an issue of possible relations between the apparent "clumsiness" of persons with Down syndrome (DS) and changes in indices of finger coordination. We hypothesized that persons with DS would prefer less challenging, safer motor strategies reflected in finger coordination patterns. Maximal single- and multi-finger force production (MVC) tasks and multi-finger tasks that required the production of a controlled time pattern (ramp) of total force were studied. As compared to typical persons, persons with DS showed lower peak forces, lower force deficit (loss of finger force in m

Mikhail Bulgakov: The man torn between medicine and literature.

The year 2016 marked the 125th anniversary of the birth of physician-venereologist and passionate writer Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov (1891-1940). From his essays emerges a figure of a man torn between medicine and literature. His works contain fragments pertaining to his personal ailments and health problems, which are described with medical precision, for example, morphine addiction. Bulgakov's essays are full of metaphors and references to the political situation of Soviet Russia. He compared this situation to syphilis as in treacherous infections, a slow destroying and enslaving of a soci

Migrations and Tuberculosis: A comparative study of Mycobacterium tuberculosis genomic population structure in Brazil and Mozambique to historical triangular slave trade knowledge to reconstruct the origins of tuberculosis infections caused by Lineage 1 in Brazil.

Lineage 1 is an ancestral lineage of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) comprising five sublineages. In a previous study, we suggested that a representative of sublineage L1.1.3, present in both Mozambique and northern Brazil, SIT129, may have been brought to Brazil by sea during the long history of slavery that lasted, between Africa and Brazil, from the early 16th century to the mid-19th century. In this study, using a combination of new comparative genomics results and human migration data extracted from the SlaveVoyages.org database, we sought to more precisely reconstruct the s

Caring for Trauma in Underserved Communities: Enhancing Psychotherapy.

Underserved communities-especially communities of color in the United States-face disproportionate exposure to trauma because of social and structural inequalities. These factors give rise to intergenerational transmission of trauma and inform cultural beliefs about psychotherapy and mental health care more broadly. Increasingly, individual psychotherapies developed in diverse settings, as well as community-based psychosocial interventions, show evidence of client engagement, acceptability, and efficacy. The authors describe upstream and immediate factors that increase vulnerability to trauma

On the consequences of childbirth: obstetrics/gynaecology, comparative anatomy and racial theories in 19th century France and Brazil.

The following paper is centred on an analysis of comparative studies of the human pelvis developed over the 19th century by mostly French natural scientists, physical anthropologists, students of the human anatomy and doctors engaged in the initial stages of the emerging fields of gynaecology and obstetrics. As this paper will argue, there was considerable overlap between these specialisations, producing a fundamentally masculine, Eurocentric and racialised knowledge that had an enormous impact in establishing racially informed gynaecological and obstetric practices. This paper argues that com

America's Original Immunization Controversy: The Tercentenary of the Boston Smallpox Epidemic of 1721.

The CoVID-19 pandemic marks the 300th anniversary of the Boston smallpox epidemic of 1721, America's first immunization controversy. Puritan minister Cotton Mather learned of inoculation for smallpox from Onesimus, a man enslaved to him. When the disease broke out in May 1721, Mather urged Boston's physicians to inoculate all those vulnerable to the disease. Zabdiel Boylston, alone among his colleagues, decided to proceed with the procedure, igniting a heated debate that occasionally grew violent. The division between the advocates and detractors of inoculation were as deep as religion and pol

Association of War-Related and Gender-Based Violence With Mental Health States of Yazidi Women.

IMPORTANCE: Yazidi women in northern Iraq have experienced severe human rights violations through attacks by the so-called Islamic State group, with severe consequences for their health. However, no studies to date have investigated how war-related and gender-based violence, including partner violence, are associated with mental health disorders in this population. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between Yazidi women's experiences of violence (ie, war violence, partner violence, enslavement) and their mental health. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study of 326

The President's Mouth: Edentulism, Prosthetic Rehabilitation, and the Provenance of Human Teeth in the Craniofacial History of George Washington.

OBJECTIVE: To reconstruct the oral and craniofacial disease trajectory of George Washington (1732-1799) from primary documentary, artefactual, and iconographic sources, and to interpret his prosthetic rehabilitation against contemporary prosthodontic and craniofacial principles. METHODS: Three classes of source were examined. The manuscript record comprised the correspondence with his dentists, the diaries, and the financial ledgers, consulted through Founders Online and the Financial Papers Project. The artefactual record comprised the 4 surviving prostheses and their documented composition.

Identifying Sexual and Labor Exploitation among Sheltered Youth Experiencing Homelessness: A Comparison of Screening Methods.

Human trafficking is a significant and growing public health concern. Subgroups of adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable to human trafficking, especially youth who are unstably housed or homeless. While youth experiencing trafficking come into contact with the healthcare system, they are often not identified during routine assessment due to lack of specific inquiry and low disclosure. Therefore, we utilized a mixed-methods study design to assess the differences in the identification of human trafficking among youth experiencing homelessness (n = 129) between a standard psych

Origin and Health Status of First-Generation Africans from Early Colonial Mexico.

The forced relocation of several thousand Africans during Mexico's historic period has so far been documented mostly through archival sources, which provide only sparse detail on their origins and lived experience. Here, we employ a bioarchaeological approach to explore the life history of three 16th century Africans from a mass burial at the San José de los Naturales Royal Hospital in Mexico City. Our approach draws together ancient genomic data, osteological analysis, strontium isotope data from tooth enamel, δ13C and δ15N isotope data from dentine, and ethnohistorical information to reveal

The eponymous Dr James Marion Sims MD, LLD (1813-1883).

Dr James Marion Sims was born in 1813 in Lancaster County, South Carolina. It was while pioneering numerous surgical procedures in Alabama that in 1849 he achieved the outstanding landmark in medical history of successfully, and consistently, repairing vesicovaginal fistulae. Sims soon developed a reputation as a fine surgeon, with new operations and techniques, using novel surgical instruments and his innovative approaches frequently published. Moving to New York City in 1853, he further established hospitals devoted entirely to women's health. Sims was controversial, with flamboyant descript
