The history of entamoebiasis.

This review article summarizes the history of amoebic dysentery (entamoebiasis) caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Initially, Entamoeba species were thought to be the most primitive extant eukaryotes, but more recent research revealed that they emerged relatively late in evolutionary history. Paleoparasitological data suggest that E. histolytica has been a parasite of humans since ancient times and was probably spread throughout the world by man during early human migration. By the end of the 19th century, it was established that E. histolytica was the etiological agent of amoebic dysentery and

Invasive Colonic Entamoebiasis in Wild Cane Toads, Australia.

We detected a disease syndrome in free-ranging Australian cane toads involving atypical behavior and emaciation that is associated with a previously undescribed Entamoeba sp. that infiltrates the colonic lining, causing it to slough. The organism may become seasonally pathogenic when toads are under hydric and nutritional stress.

Entamoebiasis in zoological non-human primates in the United Kingdom.

Entamoebiasis is a significant disease in non-human primates (NHPs), causing a spectrum of clinical presentations ranging from asymptomatic carriage to severe, necrotizing colitis and life-threatening extraintestinal dissemination. This study examined entamoebiasis in captive NHPs across nine zoological collections from 2004 to 2020. A total of 28 cases, spanning nine Old World (OW) and four New World (NW) primate species, were confirmed via histopathology and Entamoeba histolytica immunohistochemistry. Entamoebiasis caused intra- and extraintestinal disease, including necrotizing colitis and

Intestinal entamoebiasis in a captive colony of Anderson's crocodile newts Echinotriton andersoni.

Entamoeba protozoa are known to cause enteric and sometimes systemic disease in both domestic and non-domestic animals. In amphibians, Entamoeba spp. are primarily documented as incidental gastrointestinal inhabitants, with rare reports of clinically significant entamoebiasis. In the last decade, mortality outbreaks caused by a recently described protozoan, Entamoeba sp. CT1, have been documented in free-ranging anurans in Australia and managed anurans in the USA associated with gastroenteritis and substantial morbidity and mortality. In 2023, a small population of Anderson's crocodile newts E

Pathology Associated With an Outbreak of Entamoebiasis in Wild Cane Toads (Rhinella marina) in Tropical Australia.

Infection due to Entamoeba spp. is known to cause serious disease in primates (Entamoeba histolytica) and snakes (Entamoeba invadens), but there are no detailed descriptions of the pathology associated with Entamoeba spp. infection in amphibians. In 2014, an outbreak of entamoebiasis associated with a novel species of Entamoeba induced clinical illness and poor body condition in free-ranging cane toads in Australia's Northern Territory. Here, we describe the gross pathology, histology, and clinical pathology linked to the outbreak. The study compared 25 toads with invasive entamoebiasis, defin

The role of Nrf2 signaling in parasitic diseases and its therapeutic potential.

In response to invading parasites, one of the principal arms of innate immunity is oxidative stress, caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, oxidative stresses play dual functions in the disease, whereby free radicals promote pathogen removal, but they can also trigger inflammation, resulting in tissue injuries. A growing body of evidence has strongly supported the notion that nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF) signaling is one of the main antioxidant pathways to combat this oxidative burst against parasites. Given the important role of NRF2 in oxidative stress, in thi

[Anal symptoms of gastro-intestinal diseases].

In most cases the ano-cutaneous clinical symptoms correlated to diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract are not specific (erythema, itching, wounds or scarring). However in the following diseases occasional dermatological lesions may directly contribute to their diagnosis: in Crohn's disease, tuberculosis of bowel, chronic entamoebiasis and bilharziosis, the skin lesions of the anal area have the same histological structure as the gut lesions. Perianal fistulas and ulcers are frequent in Crohn's disease especially if there is a colonic and rectal spreading; they respond badly to steroid therap

Amoebiasis and its control.

On a global scale, 480 million people were recently estimated to be infected with Entamoeba histolytica and some 48 million people suffer from invasive amoebiasis. The latter, in the intestinal and extra-intestinal forms, accounts for 40 000 to 110 000 deaths annually. In view of this considerable mortality and morbidity, more research is urgently needed so that more effective control strategies may be introduced. This Update article reviews the magnitude of the problem, clinical and laboratory diagnosis, present treatment and prevention measures, possible control strategies, and research prior

Extraintestinal Entamoeba moshkovskii Infection, Eastern India.

Entamoeba moshkovskii is historically considered nonpathogenic. We report a case of severe extraintestinal infection in a patient from eastern India who had abdominal pain, fever, weight loss, anemia, and a splenic abscess. Molecular analysis confirmed E. moshkovskii as the causative agent. This case highlights this parasite's potential to cause severe illness.

A review of wildlife tourism and meta-analysis of parasitism in Africa's national parks and game reserves.

The recent increase of parasitic diseases associated with wildlife tourism can be traced to human contact with wildlife and intense modification of wildlife habitat. The continental estimates of parasitic diseases among visited wildlife-tourists and mammalian wildlife present in conservation areas are lacking; therefore, a general review was necessary to provide insights into Africa's parasitic disease burden and transmission between humans and wildlife. A two-step analysis was conducted with searches in Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science and Global Health. All diseases reported with

The Taxonomy of the Genus Entamoeba (Archamoebea: Endamoebidae): A Historical and Nomenclatural Review.

Throughout history, species within the genus Entamoeba have been described using criteria that were not always applied consistently, resulting in an often confusing and controversial taxonomy. Several factors contributed to this situation, including the limited number of morphological characters available for taxonomic studies, overlapping host ranges, mixed infections, and a cosmopolitan distribution associated with human and animal movements. The incorporation of genetic data as diagnostic and differential criteria during the second half of the twentieth century enabled the recognition of cr

Coincidence of acute amoebic appendicitis and enterobius vermicularis infestation.

BACKGROUND: Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is a rare skin disease, mostly seen on the legs and often occurring in patients with diabetes mellitus. The disease belongs to the idiopathic cutaneous palisading granulomatous dermatitides associated with a degeneration of collagen, thus leading to skin atrophy. Application of topical corticosteroids is the most widely used treatment but the results are not always satisfactory and may worsen skin atrophy. Preliminary studies in patients with NL have shown a clinical response with psoralen plus ultraviolet (UV) A (PUVA). Objectives To study the effect of

[Acute, non-lithiasic, amebic cholecystitis].

The estimated percentage of non calculous cholecystitis is 2-14%. In most cases it is difficult to identify the cause and in very few cases it is possible to establish the etiology. Few cases are secondary to bacterial infections and the cause is very rarely a parasitic infection. We present a case of acute cholecystitis secondary to Entamoeba histolytica infection; the frequency, etiopathogenic mechanism and treatment are discussed.

Recent progress in vaccines for amebiasis.

The persistence of amebiasis as a global health problem, despite the availability of effective treatment, has led to the search for vaccines to prevent this deadly disease. Recent clinical studies suggest that mucosal immunity could provide some protection against recurrent intestinal infection with E. histolytica, but there is contradictory evidence about protective immunity after amebic liver abscess. Progress in vaccine development has been facilitated by new animal models that allow better testing of potential vaccine candidates and by the application of recombinant technology to vaccine d

Overview of Entamoeba histolytica and amebiasis in Korea with special reference to research notes.

Amebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica infection has been a prevalent protozoan disease in Korea since old times. For this reason, a number of scientific publications in relation to this protozoa has totaled 186 so far in the literature, as of 1989. The subjects ranged from biology to its treatment and prevention. The overall achievement by scientists and clinicians in Korea has been meritorious in elucidating some of the pending problems in the areas of pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. Among them, development of a culture method applying diphasic medium, studies on virulence of the

Differences in circannual characteristics of the incidences of amebiasis and giardiasis.

Entamoeba histolytica is the most common pathogenic intestinal parasite in México. Prevalence rates of AM vary widely from place to place, being higher in areas with poor sanitation, households and institutions, and among male homosexuals. Early recognition and treatment may be necessary to prevent its spread in the community. Intervention by preventive health education is indicated. The timing of such educational endeavours may be adjusted to any rhythmic and to that extent predictable changes in the incidence of AM and of any other possibly related gastrointestinal parasitic disease, such as
