[Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli from the rabbit].

Intestinal pathology is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in breeding colonies of commercial rabbits. Among pathogens, some strains of Escherichia coli are widely involved in enteric infections. In France, pathogenic E coli belonging to the 0103 serogroup has been isolated in 30-40% of weanling rabbits with diarrhea. Given these conditions, it was of interest to review the different groups of diarrheogenic E coli and their plasmid-encoded virulence properties, especially adhesion and secretion of enterotoxins or cytotoxins. We attempted to investigate the E coli responsible for diarrhe

Enteropathogenic escherichia coli infection in children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is an important diarrheal pathogen of young children. As the diagnosis of EPEC is now based mainly on molecular criteria, there has been an important change in its prevalence. The purpose of this study is to review the current epidemiology of EPEC infection and the new insights into its physiopathology. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent epidemiological studies indicate that atypical EPEC (aEPEC) is more prevalent than typical EPEC (tEPEC) in both developed and developing countries, and that aEPEC is important in both pediatric endemic diarrhea

Mouse model of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is an important cause of diarrhea in humans. EPEC infection of cultured intestinal epithelial cells induces attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions, alters intestinal ion transport, increases paracellular permeability, and stimulates inflammation. The lack of a small-animal model has restricted in vivo studies examining EPEC-host interactions. The aim of this study was to characterize the C57BL/6J mouse as a model of EPEC infection. We have shown that EPEC can adhere to and colonize the intestinal epithelium of C57BL/6J mice. Animal weight and water intake

Traditional enteropathogenic Escherichia coli of infantile diarrhea.

First described in 1885, Escherichia coli gradually emerged as a cause of infantile diarrhea. Currently, four pathogenic categories of diarrheagenic E. coli are recognized: enteropathogenic (EPEC), enterotoxigenic (ETEC), enteroinvasive (EIEC), and enterohemorrhagic (EHEC). Of these, ETEC and EPEC are important causes of pediatric diarrhea, especially in developing countries. ETEC strains are characterized by their production of well-defined heat-labile or heat-stable enterotoxins. In the absence of other identifying characteristics, EPEC strains have been identified by serotyping only; recent

The rise and rise of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli.

First described in 1885, Escherichia coli gradually achieved recognition as a cause of diarrhoea. Strains of E. coli which belonged to a limited number of O-serogroups and had been associated with outbreaks of diarrhoea in hospitalised children were designated 'enteropathogenic' E. coli (EPEC) to distinguish them from E. coli strains that cause other types of infection. The discovery that some strains of E. coli can produce toxins or invade epithelial cells in a similar fashion to established pathogens, such as Vibrio cholerae and Shigella species, shed new light on E. coli virulence. As EPEC

Cellular responses to enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), first described in the 1940's and 1950's, remain an important cause of severe infantile diarrhoea in many parts of the developing world. EPEC do not produce enterotoxins and are not invasive; instead their virulence depends upon exploitation of host cell signalling pathways and the host cell cytoskeleton both as a means of colonizing mucosal surfaces of the small intestine and causing diarrhoea. Following initial mucosal attachment, EPEC secrete 'signalling' proteins and express a surface adhesin, intimin, to produce 'attaching & effacing' lesions in t

Effect of zinc in enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) infection triggers the release of ATP from host intestinal cells, and the ATP is broken down to ADP, AMP, and adenosine in the lumen of the intestine. Ecto-5'-nucleotidase (CD73) is the main enzyme responsible for the conversion of 5'-AMP to adenosine, which triggers fluid secretion from host intestinal cells and also has growth-promoting effects on EPEC bacteria. In a recent study, we examined the role of the host enzyme CD73 in EPEC infection by testing the effect of ecto-5'-nucleotidase inhibitors. Zinc was a less potent inhibitor of ecto-5'-nucleoti

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection: history and clinical aspects.

Diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli remains an important cause of diarrhoeal disease worldwide. In terms of global public health, enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and enterotoxigenic E. coli are the most important. However, enterohaemorrhagic E. coli has emerged as a cause of disease in developed countries in recent years, and a number of large outbreaks have been reported. Therefore, the importance of research into diarrhoeagenic E. coli remains an important issue. EPEC is the most widespread of the diarrhoeagenic E. coli and provides a good virulence model for other E. coli infections, as well as

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and life threatening chronic diarrhoea.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) infection is not generally thought to cause severe diarrhoea after the neonatal period. Patients admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children over the three years (1984-7) with diarrhoea and EPEC infection were reviewed. Clinical details, features of small intestinal mucosa, and treatment were recorded in those who developed chronic diarrhoea with failure to thrive. Twenty six children with EPEC required hospital admission for diarrhoea and six of these (23%) developed chronic diarrhoea. In contrast only two (5%) of 42 with other serogroups of E co

Enzootic enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection in laboratory rabbits.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is the most important cause of persistent diarrhea in children, particularly in developing countries. Animals serve as pathogenic E. coli reservoirs, and compelling evidence for cross-species EPEC transmission exists. In this report, enzootic EPEC infection associated with up to 10.5% diarrhea-associated morbidity in a large laboratory Dutch Belted rabbit colony was investigated. These rabbits were obtained from a commercial vendor and had acute diarrhea following shipment. Fecal culture of 20 rabbits yielded 48 E. coli isolates, 83% of which were eae p

Virulence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, a global pathogen.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) remains an important cause of diarrheal disease worldwide. Research into EPEC is intense and provides a good virulence model of other E. coli infections as well as other pathogenic bacteria. Although the virulence mechanisms are now better understood, they are extremely complex and much remains to be learnt. The pathogenesis of EPEC depends on the formation of an ultrastructural lesion in which the bacteria make intimate contact with the host apical enterocyte membrane. The formation of this lesion is a consequence of the ability of EPEC to adhere in a

Exploitation of host cells by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Microbial pathogens have evolved many ingenious ways to infect their hosts and cause disease, including the subversion and exploitation of target host cells. One such subversive microbe is enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC). A major cause of infantile diarrhea in developing countries, EPEC poses a significant health threat to children worldwide. Central to EPEC-mediated disease is its colonization of the intestinal epithelium. After initial adherence, EPEC causes the localized effacement of microvilli and intimately attaches to the host cell surface, forming characteristic attaching and

Characterization of fimbriae produced by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) express rope-like bundles of filaments, termed bundle-forming pili (BFP) (J. A. Girón, A. S. Y. Ho, and G. K. Schoolnik, Science 254:710-713, 1991). Expression of BFP is associated with localized adherence to HEp-2 cells and the presence of the EPEC adherence factor plasmid. In this study, we describe the identification of rod-like fimbriae and fibrillae expressed simultaneously on the bacterial surface of three prototype EPEC strains. Upon fimbrial extraction from EPEC B171 (O111:NM), three fimbrial subunits with masses of 16.5, 15.5, and 14.7 kDa were

Flotillin 1 Regulation of Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli Pedestal Length.

BACKGROUND: The attaching and effacing pathogens, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), remodel the host actin cytoskeleton to form actin-rich pedestals that anchor the bacteria atop intestinal epithelial cells. Although pedestal formation requires clathrin-endocytic proteins, the role of clathrin-independent proteins like flotillin 1 remain unclear. METHODS: Flotillin 1 localization in pedestal formation was analyzed using immunofluorescence microscopy during EPEC and EHEC infections in HeLa cells. This protein's function was then examined using compe

Surveillance of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli in England, 2011-2024.

Introduction. Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a diarrhoeagenic pathotype of E. coli, historically associated with gastrointestinal (GI) disease in infants and young children.Hypothesis/Gap statement. Although EPEC was the subject of extensive microbiological and epidemiological investigations throughout the twentieth century, in recent years, surveillance of diarrhoeagenic E. coli (DEC) has focused on Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. Consequently, the true clinical and community burden of EPEC is unknown.Aim. The aim of the study was to review the microbiological typing data and demo

Pathophysiology of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli during a host infection.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a major cause of infantile diarrhea in developing countries. However, sporadic outbreaks caused by this microorganism in developed countries are frequently reported recently. As an important zoonotic pathogen, EPEC is being monitored annually in several countries. Hallmark of EPEC infection is formation of attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions on the small intestine. To establish A/E lesions during a gastrointestinal tract (GIT) infeciton, EPEC must thrive in diverse GIT environments. A variety of stress responses by EPEC have been reported. These res

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli Infection in Cancer and Immunosuppressed Patients.

BACKGROUND: The role of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) as a cause of diarrhea in cancer and immunocompromised patients is controversial. Quantitation of fecal bacterial loads has been proposed as a method to differentiate colonized from truly infected patients. METHODS: We studied 77 adult cancer and immunosuppressed patients with diarrhea and EPEC identified in stools by FilmArray, 25 patients with pathogen-negative diarrhea, and 21 healthy adults without diarrhea. Stools were studied by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) for EPEC genes eaeA and lifA/efa-1 and strains
