Enterovirus eibovi (EV-E) is a bovine RNA virus with debated pathogenic potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro effects of bovine lactoferrin (bLF), an antimicrobial and immunomodulatory glycoprotein, on EV-E-infected bovine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The PBMC viability, phagocytic function, and lymphocyte proliferation were examined using spectrophotometric assays. Flow cytometry was used for immunophenotyping of lymphocytes, and real-time quantitative PCR for evaluation of immune-related gene expression. The safe concentration range of bLF (1-25 µg/mL) w

This study successfully isolated a novel bovine enterovirus strain from a bovine fecal sample, which was designated as Sichuan/SQ/20. The isolate showed typical enterovirus morphology under electron microscopy. Phylogenetic analysis showed that this strain exhibits the closest genetic relationship with the HeN-YR91 and JPN/TottoriU-31 strains, and all three belong to the BEV-F1 genosubtype. Subsequently, comprehensive investigations were conducted on the biological characteristics of this virus, both in vivo and in vitro. In vitro characterization revealed that viral replication commenced at 3

Bovine enterovirus (BEV) infection manifests as a spectrum of clinical signs affecting the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and reproductive systems in cattle. Outbreaks of this disease results in large economic losses to the bovine industry worldwide. Currently there are no efficacious vaccines and medicines to prevent BEV infection. In the present study, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify the VP1 and VP2 genes of BEV, enabling the synthesis of a chimeric recombinant protein which contained partial sequences from both proteins. Subsequently, the emulsified purif

The pathogenesis and virulence of Bovine enterovirus-1 (BEV-1) in cattle is largely unknown. Reports concerning its virulence suggest that there might be an association between BEV-1 infections and a range of diseases in cattle that vary from respiratory to enteric to reproductive disease and infertility. In the current study, the pathogenesis associated with acute infection of BEV-1 in calves experimentally inoculated with the Oklahoma isolate of BEV-1 was described. Although interpretation of the study was limited by lack of an effective control group, results suggest that an association bet

We describe the draft genome of a bovine enterovirus (EV) isolate recovered from sewage in Nigeria. This isolate replicates on both RD and L20B cell lines but is negative for all EV screens in use by the Global Poliovirus Eradication Initiative (GPEI). It contains 7,368 nucleotides (nt) with 50.2% G+C content and an open reading frame (ORF) with 6,525 nt (2,174 amino acids).

Bovine enterovirus (BEV) is a contagious pathogen that can cause respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in cattle, resulting in economic losses to the global livestock industry. However, there are currently no commercial vaccines available for BEV. In this study, BEV was detected in fecal samples from diarrheic cattle in China between 2023 and 2024, marking the first reported prevalence of BEV in diarrheic cattle from Sichuan province. Two strains, HN004-8 and HB002, were isolated in Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells and identified as BEV through reverse transcription-polymerase chain

Bovine enterovirus (BEV) infection is one of the important infectious diseases that cause digestive and respiratory symptoms in cattle, posing a significant threat to the cattle industry. Currently, no vaccines or therapeutic drugs are available for this disease. In our study, we utilized a mouse model to investigate the effects of BEV infection on the gut microbiota and examine the therapeutic potential of magnolol (Mag), a polyphenolic bioactive substance, in terms of BEV infection. BEV infection significantly altered the microbiota composition, where the abundance of some beneficial bacteri

In recent years, bovine enterovirus (BEV) has been increasingly associated with diarrhea in cattle in China, posing new challenges for disease control in the cattle industry. However, the mechanisms underlying BEV pathogenesis and virulence remain poorly understood. Infectious cDNA clones provide a powerful tool for dissecting viral replication and pathogenic mechanisms. In this study, we generated a full-length infectious cDNA clone of the BEV-F isolate HB19-1. Three overlapping fragments spanning the complete viral genome were amplified by RT-PCR and assembled downstream of a cytomegalovirus

Bovine enterovirus (BEV), a member of the family Picornaviridae, is an understudied pathogen associated with bovine enteric and respiratory disease, and host factors supporting its infection remain poorly defined. Here, a genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 loss-of-function screen in Madin-Darby bovine kidney cells identified carboxypeptidase A6 (CPA6) as a candidate host factor for BEV-F infection. CPA6 deficiency impaired productive BEV-F infection, as shown by reduced viral titers, extracellular viral RNA, and viral protein expression, whereas CPA6 complementation restored these phenotypes. Stage-speci

BACKGROUND: Bovine enterovirus (BEV) belongs to the species Enterovirus E or F, genus Enterovirus and family Picornaviridae. Although numerous studies have identified BEVs in the feces of cattle with diarrhea, the pathogenicity of BEVs remains unclear. Previously, we reported the detection of novel kobu-like virus in calf feces, by metagenomics analysis. In the present study, we identified a novel BEV in diarrheal feces collected for that survey. Complete genome sequences were determined by deep sequencing in feces. Secondary RNA structure analysis of the 5' untranslated region (UTR), phylogen

Bovine enterovirus (BEV) is a significant pathogen affecting bovine intestinal health, posing challenges to cattle production and public health. Existing detection methods, such as RT-PCR, RT-qPCR, and LAMP, are time-consuming and dependent on specialized laboratory facilities, highlighting the need for rapid and field-deployable diagnostic tools. In this study, we developed a real-time reverse transcription recombinase-aided amplification (RT-RAA) assay designed for BEV detection, capable of delivering results within 20 min at 39℃. The real-time RT-RAA assay showed no cross-reactivity to othe

BACKGROUND: Bovine enteroviruses (BEVs) are widely distributed among cattle worldwide and are commonly associated with subclinical infections, although their role in enteric, respiratory, and reproductive disorders remains incompletely understood. BEVs infect cattle as their natural host and are currently classified mainly within the species Enterovirus E and Enterovirus F. The advancement of virological research conducted as part of the elimination study may be affected by the concurrent circulation of enteric viruses, including BEV, in cattle populations. During a non-cytopathogenic BVDV eli

Bovine enterovirus (BEV) is associated with respiratory, intestinal, and reproductive disorders in cattle, but its evolutionary characteristics and pathogenic potential remain insufficiently understood. In this study, a BEV strain was successfully isolated from a diarrheic fecal sample collected from an 8-month-old Holstein calf and was designated BEV NM2407. The virus replicated stably in Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells, reaching a titer of 109.3 TCID50/mL. Its complete genome was 7414 nt in length, and phylogenetic analysis classified the isolate as EV-E4. Recombination analysis ident

INTRODUCTION: Bovine enterovirus (BEV) is a contagious viral agent that can cause respiratory infections and disease outbreaks among calves. This study reports an outbreak that occurred in a population of dairy calves in northern Xinjiang in November 2024.
METHODS: Nasal swab samples were collected from 58 clinically symptomatic calves and analyzed for some bovine respiratory viruses using RT-PCR and viral metagenomic sequencing.
RESULTS: Viral metagenomic analysis annotated only one bovine pathogen, BEV, in respiratory disease samples. RT-PCR further confirmed that BEV was detected in all n

Although mixed viral infections are increasingly recognized as contributors to bovine diarrhea syndrome, diagnosing such co-infections remains challenging, particularly in high-altitude regions where surveillance is limited. In July 2024, a calf presenting with severe diarrhea and respiratory distress was identified on a cattle farm in Linzhi, Xizang, China. Using unbiased whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of the fecal sample, we assembled near-complete genomes of three distinct RNA viruses: two bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1 (BVDV-1) strains (subtypes 1v and 1q, designated BVDV-1/XZ87 and XZ8

BACKGROUND: Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a cause of substantial economic loss to the cattle industry worldwide, and there are currently no effective treatment or preventive measures. Bovine enterovirus (BEV) has a broad host range with low virulence and is a good candidate as a viral vaccine vector. In this study, we explored new insertion sites for the expression of exogenous genes in BEV, and developed a recombinant infectious cDNA clone for BEV BJ101 strain expressing BVDV E0 protein.
METHODS: A recognition site for the viral proteinase 3Cpro was inserted in the GpBSK-BEV plasmid

Bovine enteroviruses are members of the family Picornaviridae, genus Enterovirus. Whilst little is known about their pathogenic potential, they are apparently endemic in some cattle and cattle environments. Only one of the two current serotypes has been sequenced completely. In this report, the entire genome sequences of bovine enterovirus 2 (BEV-2) strain PS87 and a recent isolate from an endemically infected herd in Maryland, USA (Wye3A) are presented. The recent isolate clearly segregated phylogenetically with sequences representing the BEV-2 serotype, as did other isolates from the endemic

Bovine enterovirus, a member of the Enterovirus genus in the Picornaviridae family, causes severe digestive and respiratory illnesses in cattle. These illnesses threaten the healthy development of the cattle industry. Innate immunity plays a critical role in resisting viral infections, but viruses also use various strategies to evade or counteract the host's immune system. The mechanisms by which bovine enteroviruses evade the host immune response and promote their replication remain unclear. This study used the HY12 strain of enterovirus as a model to investigate its interaction with both bov

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Insulin autoantibodies appear often as the first autoantibody in children who develop islet-cell autoimmunity. Our recent studies indicate that primary immunisation to insulin is induced in early infancy by exposure to dietary bovine insulin present in cows' milk formulas. As gut-associated lymphoid tissue is also the primary replication site of enteroviruses, we tested whether enterovirus infections could modify the development of immune response to dietary insulin in early infancy.
METHODS: We studied the development of IgG-antibodies to dietary bovine insulin by enzyme imm
