Meeting the challenge of corporate entrepreneurship.

To be competitive, companies must grow innovative new businesses. Corporate entrepreneurship, however, isn't easy. New ventures face innumerable barriers and seldom mesh smoothly with well-established systems, processes, and cultures. Nonetheless, success requires a balance of old and new organizational traits-and unless companies keep those opposing forces in equilibrium, their new businesses will flounder. The authors describe the challenges companies face when they pursue new businesses, as well as the usual problematic responses to those challenges. Such companies, they say, must perform t

Effects of the pandemic crisis on entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an economic crisis in advanced economies greater than the 2008 economic crisis, as the latest Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forecasts indicate. Entrepreneurship activity is an important factor to be considered to reduce this negative. The objective of this paper is to analyze the factors that favor entrepreneurship in the COVID-19 pandemic situation and explore the relationship between entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Monetary, fiscal, competitiveness, and business expectations are factors to consider. To achieve thi

Assistive technologies in employment and entrepreneurship: Graduates with sensory disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Across practice and policy, assistive technologies (ATs) are positioned as a pathway to economic inclusion for graduates with sensory disabilities in South Africa. Still, systemic barriers persist. Developing workable interventions requires in-depth attention to the lived experiences of graduates, which include knowledge on the way devices, systems and attitudes interact in everyday employment seeking and enterprise activities. OBJECTIVES: The study endeavoured to examine how unemployed tertiary-level graduates with sensory disabilities in Gauteng use AT in seeking employment and

Not for the faint of heart? A gendered perspective on psychological distress in entrepreneurship.

Our research was motivated by the goal of better understanding how male and female first-time entrepreneurs psychologically appraise key stressors during the business start-up process, and how these stress appraisals are related to psychological distress after business launch. Informed by role congruity theory (Eagly & Karau, 2002), we argue that financial and social stressors during business launch are appraised as particularly stressful by women. Both starting a business due to financial needs motivation (i.e., high agency) and failing to receive social support during business launch (i.e.,

Destructive Creation at Work: How Financial Distress Spurs Entrepreneurship.

Using U.S. Census firm-worker data, I document that firms' financial distress has an economically important effect on employee departures to entrepreneurship. The impact is amplified in the high-tech and service sectors, where employees are key assets. In states with enforceable noncompete contracts, the effect is mitigated. Compared to typical entrepreneurs, distress-driven entrepreneurs are high-wage workers who found better firms, as measured by jobs, pay, and survival. Startup jobs compensate for 33% of job losses at the constrained incumbents. Overall, the financial inability of incumbent

COVID-19 and the importance of space in entrepreneurship research and policy.

Given the COVID-19 crisis, the importance of space in the global economic system has emerged as critical in a hitherto unprecedented way. Even as large-scale, globally operating digital platform enterprises find new ways to thrive in the midst of a crisis, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) nestled in local economies have proven to be fragile to shocks, causing countless local economies to unravel in the face of severe challenges to survival. Here, we discuss the role of entrepreneurship in re-building local economies that are more resilient. Specifically, we take a spatial perspective

Entrepreneurship and Eudaimonic Well-Being: Five Venues for New Science.

Researchers in entrepreneurial studies are increasingly interested in the psychological well-being of entrepreneurs. Approaches to well-being tend to be partitioned into hedonic and eudaimonic formulations. Most entrepreneurial studies have focused on hedonic indicators (life satisfaction, happiness, positive affect). The central objective of this essay is to examine the relevance of eudaimonic well-being for understanding entrepreneurial experience. The theoretical background and key dimensions of eudaimonic well-being are described and their relevance for entrepreneurial studies is considere

Women entrepreneurship and family-related barriers: an empirical analysis in Southern Benin.

This study investigates the family-related and socio-cultural barriers shaping women's engagement in small and medium-sized enterprises in Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi, the main economic hubs of southern Benin. Despite numerous initiatives aimed at promoting women's economic empowerment, institutional support remains insufficient, while entrenched social norms continue to constrain women's entrepreneurial activities. Anchored in the discourse on Sustainable Development Goal 5, the study emphasizes how socio-cultural structures produce and sustain gender-based vulnerabilities. A qualitative resear

Towards an understanding of multi-generational higher education cohorts in gamified entrepreneurship education.

The increasing inclusion of gamified courses in entrepreneurship programmes in higher education have left gaps in understanding the critical essentials of the multi-generational student cohort undertaking these programmes. In this paper, we interrogate the educational experiences of multi-generational higher education students in a core gamified entrepreneurship course in an undergraduate business school programme. The research analyzed 392 course feedback responses from three generations (X, Y and Z) of a multi-generational cohort. The study developed and validated a behaviour-results model f

Push or Pull: Changes in the Relative Risk and Growth of Entrepreneurship Among Older Households.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Amid insufficient retirement savings and the growing need to work longer, it is important to understand why self-employment, especially entrepreneurship, has grown among older households. Older households may have been pushed into entrepreneurship by the growing risks of wage-and-salary employment as wages and jobs have become less stable. Alternatively, older households may have been pulled into entrepreneurship as the associated risks have declined, for instance, due to greater opportunities to diversify income away from risky business income. We examine the economic ca

How corporate entrepreneurship shapes millennials' work engagement: the role of autonomy and competence.

INTRODUCTION: Corporate entrepreneurship (CE) and work engagement (WE) are well-established topics in the literature; however, little is known about the psychological processes through which a CE ecosystem shapes employee engagement. Specifically, no prior studies have explained this relationship in terms of psychological need satisfaction. In addition, the millennial workforce, characterized by distinctive values and work preferences, has received limited attention in CE research. To address these gaps, this study applies self-determination theory (SDT) to examine how satisfaction of basic ps

Risky business: linking Toxoplasma gondii infection and entrepreneurship behaviours across individuals and countries.

Disciplines such as business and economics often rely on the assumption of rationality when explaining complex human behaviours. However, growing evidence suggests that behaviour may concurrently be influenced by infectious microorganisms. The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii infects an estimated 2 billion people worldwide and has been linked to behavioural alterations in humans and other vertebrates. Here we integrate primary data from college students and business professionals with national-level information on cultural attitudes towards business to test the hypothesis that T. gondii infection i

Creative entrepreneurship as a socially embedded form of work: a sociological ecology for the platform society.

Creative entrepreneurship increasingly combines creative production with entrepreneurial, communicative, and platform-mediated work. Existing scholarship has generated important insights into opportunity recognition, innovation, value creation, and creative labor, but these perspectives often examine entrepreneurial activity, social relations, cultural recognition, and platform governance as analytically separate processes. This Perspective develops the Sociological Ecology of Creative Entrepreneurship (SECE), a conceptual framework that positions creative entrepreneurship as socially embedded

The "silver economy" of women's health: entrepreneurship and service models in China's menopause health sector.

Menopause health services in China lie at the critical juncture of the "silver economy" and women's health. As society ages and health awareness grows, the needs of roughly 160 million middle-aged women are moving to the forefront, creating a vast blue ocean market. This study constructs a "Demand-Supply-Empowerment" Interaction Model, identifying the core market conflict as the clash between widespread "physical/psychological distress" and a "mismatched service system." We explore the authentic experiences, needs, and behaviors of contemporary Chinese women. Using web crawling, we gathered ab

Entrepreneurship Awareness and Intention After a Training Program in Nursing Interns: A Pretest-Posttest Study.

Background: Entrepreneurship has become an essential competency for healthcare professionals because it promotes innovation, autonomy, and the development of sustainable healthcare services. Although entrepreneurship education has demonstrated positive effects on students' entrepreneurial knowledge and competencies, evidence regarding its effectiveness among nursing interns remains limited. This study examined changes in nursing interns' entrepreneurship awareness, entrepreneurial intention, and entrepreneurial characteristics following participation in a structured entrepreneurship training p

Intra-organizational dynamics as drivers of entrepreneurship among physicians and managers in hospitals of western countries.

During the past decade, entrepreneurship in the healthcare sector has become increasingly important. The aging society, the continuous stream of innovative technologies and the growth of chronic illnesses are jeopardizing the sustainability of healthcare systems. In response, many European governments started to reform healthcare during the 1990s, replacing the traditional logic of medical professionalism with business-like logics. This trend is expected to continue as many governments will have to reduce their healthcare spending in response to the current growing budget deficits. In the proc

Fostering Healthcare Innovation: A Mixed-Methods Study of an Impact Entrepreneurship Course for Nurse Practitioner Students.

Background/Objectives: Despite its benefits for both nurses and patients, entrepreneurship among nurses remains uncommon. Specifically, impact entrepreneurship has rarely been applied in nursing. Impact entrepreneurship promotes solutions to health, social, and environmental challenges using business models committed to measurable social impact and return on investment. Beginning in 2020, an impact entrepreneurship course was introduced as a mandatory component of the master's and nurse practitioner programs in geriatrics and palliative care at an Israeli college.
