Hair as a biomarker of environmental manganese exposure.

The absence of well-validated biomarkers of manganese (Mn) exposure in children remains a major obstacle for studies of Mn toxicity. We developed a hair cleaning methodology to establish the utility of hair as an exposure biomarker for Mn and other metals (Pb, Cr, Cu), using ICPMS, scanning electron microscopy, and laser ablation ICPMS to evaluate cleaning efficacy. Exogenous metal contamination on hair that was untreated or intentionally contaminated with dust or Mn-contaminated water was effectively removed using a cleaning method of 0.5%Triton X-100 sonication plus 1 N nitric acid sonicatio

Biomarkers of environmental toxicity and susceptibility in autism.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) may result from a combination of genetic/biochemical susceptibilities in the form of a reduced ability to excrete mercury and/or increased environmental exposure at key developmental times. Urinary porphyrins and transsulfuration metabolites in participants diagnosed with an ASD were examined. A prospective, blinded study was undertaken to evaluate a cohort of 28 participants with an ASD diagnosis for Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) scores, urinary porphyrins, and transsulfuration metabolites. Testing was conducted using Vitamin Diagnostics, Inc. (CLIA-app

Environmental Pollution, Biomarkers, and Dementia: An Evidence Review.

With rapid global urbanization, exposure to environmental pollutants has emerged as a potentially important determinant of cognitive health. We therefore systematically searched PubMed and Embase for epidemiological studies published between 2020 and 2026 and reviewed the associations between ambient air pollution, environmental chemical pollutants, and dementia. Evidence on potential biological mechanisms was identified to support the biological plausibility of the observed associations. Epidemiological evidence indicated that long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides

Fossil fuel biomarkers in sewage sludges: environmental significance.

Fossil fuel biomarkers, or "molecular fossils," are specific organic substances found in coals, petroleums, and sedimentary rocks. They are formed during millions of years of sedimentary burial by geochemical alteration of biological molecules, such as cholesterol, under the effect of biodegradation, temperature, pressure, and mineral catalysis, to produce geochemically mature molecules, for example, aromatic steroids (Fig. 1). Since fossil fuel biomarkers have a very specific molecular structure betraying fossil fuel sources, such markers should be useful in assessing the fossil fuel contamin

Biomarkers of exposure to carcinogenic PAHs and their relationship with environmental factors.

The EXPAH project is a multicentre European study in which biomarkers of exposure, biomarkers of effect, genetic susceptibility and environmental factors were studied in populations exposed to differing levels of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (c-PAHs). We describe here the relationships between the levels of DNA adducts (as biomarkers of exposure), the exposure to air pollution and smoking status. Lymphocyte bulky DNA adducts were significantly correlated with exposure when subjects were classified either by job description or by personal monitor measurements, and both bulky an

Molecular biomarkers associated with environmental naphthalene exposure in the respiratory system.

Naphthalene (NPT) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminant found in tobacco smoke and various consumer products, causing widespread toxic exposure to human. NPT-induced cell toxicity depends on a metabolic activation step mediated by cytochrome P450 (CYP) and primarily affects non-ciliated club cells of the conducting airways. Here, we characterize the histological features and gene expression profiles of airway epithelial cells following NPT-induced injury and identify early response genes (ERGs) that are sensitive to NPT in respiratory organs. NPT results in the detachment and

Novel biomarkers of fetal and neonatal environmental exposure, effect and susceptibility.

Rapid advancements in science and technology have allowed medical providers to treat wider ranges of diseases with safer and more effective therapies than ever before. One of the areas of health that has been consistently understudied, however, is one that affects us all: environmental health or the effects that the chemicals we are exposed to every day have on our acute and chronic health. This effect can be exacerbated during and shortly after pregnancy, as an individual exposure is often shared by both the mother and the fetus/neonate. The diagnosis and monitoring of chemical exposure can b

DNA damage-inducible genes as biomarkers for exposures to environmental agents.

A biodosimetric approach to determine alpha-particle dose to the respiratory tract epithelium from known exposures to radon has been developed in the rat. Cytotoxicity assays have been used to obtain dose-conversion factors for cumulative exposures typical of those encountered by underground uranium miners. However, this approach is not sensitive enough to derive dose-conversion factors for indoor radon exposures. The expression of DNA damage-inducible genes is being investigated as a biomarker of exposure to radon progeny. Exposure of cultures of A549 cells to alpha particles resulted in an i

Air toxics: biomarkers in environmental applications--overview and summary of recommendations.

On April 27-28, 1995, the National Urban Air Toxics Research Center hosted a Symposium on Air Toxics: Biomarkers in Environmental Applications. The purpose of the symposium was to define the current state of the art in the application of biomarkers for environmental exposures to benzene, toluene, styrene, 1,3-butadiene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, manganese, and chromium. Sensitive, specific, and cost-effective biomarkers of exposure, effect, and susceptibility may greatly improve our knowledge of the human health impacts of air toxics exposures. Presentations were made on the first day

Nanoplastics in environmental biota: analytical challenges, tissue translocation, and biomarkers for biomonitoring.

Nanoplastics are increasingly recognised as relevant contaminants in environmental biota, yet their integration into biomonitoring remains limited by analytical and interpretative uncertainties. This review critically examines nanoplastic detection in biological matrices, evidence of uptake and tissue distribution, and biomarkers of early biological effects. Although experimental studies suggest that model nanoplastics may reach internal tissues, quantitative confirmation of intact-particle translocation remains limited, and fluorescence-based findings may be affected by dye leaching, tissue a

Aristolactam-DNA adducts are a biomarker of environmental exposure to aristolochic acid.

Endemic (Balkan) nephropathy is a chronic tubulointerstitial disease frequently accompanied by urothelial cell carcinomas of the upper urinary tract. This disorder has recently been linked to exposure to aristolochic acid, a powerful nephrotoxin and human carcinogen. Following metabolic activation, aristolochic acid reacts with genomic DNA to form aristolactam-DNA adducts that generate a unique TP53 mutational spectrum in the urothelium. The aristolactam-DNA adducts are concentrated in the renal cortex, thus serving as biomarkers of internal exposure to aristolochic acid. Here, we present mole

Exposure to Environmental Pollutants and Their Association with Biomarkers of Aging: A Multipollutant Approach.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content and telomere length are putative aging biomarkers and are sensitive to environmental stressors, including pollutants. Our objective was to identify, from a set of environmental exposures, which exposure is associated with leukocyte mtDNA content and telomere length in adults. This study includes 175 adults from 50 to 65 years old from the cross-sectional Flemish Environment and Health study, of whom leukocyte telomere length and mtDNA content were determined using qPCR. The levels of exposure of seven metals, 11 organohalogens, and four perfluorinated compound

Assessment of biochemical biomarkers and environmental stress indicators in some freshwater fish.

The mechanism by which an organism can adapt to subtle environmental changes is predicated on modifications to biochemical processes within the cellular metabolism in response to such changes. Changes in these processes have the potential to induce alterations in cellular structures and tissue organization, as well as establish a causal link between fluctuations in these parameters and stressors exposure. This investigation's main goal and innovation is to evaluate the environmental stress indicators in the aquatic ecosystem of Lake Qarun. Pesticide residues in freshwater fish should be the pr

Exposure to environmental toxicants during pregnancy and placental angiogenic biomarkers: An integrative review.

Placental angiogenic biomarkers, including soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), placental growth factor (PlGF), and the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio, are indicators of placental vascular health and are implicated in adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia and preterm birth. Exposure to environmental toxicants, including air pollutants, metals and trace elements, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), are increasingly recognized as contributors to placental dysfunction; however, their effects on angiogenic biomarkers remain unclear. This inte

Environmental monitoring by gene expression biomarkers in Barbus graellsii: laboratory and field studies.

Barbel (Barbus graellsii) is a freshwater fish used as a sentinel species in environmental monitoring programmes and ecotoxicological studies in northern Spain, particularly in the Ebro River basin, the largest freshwater resource in Spain. We developed specific primers for the quantification of CYP1A and metallothionein (MT)-1 and -2 gene expression by QRT-PCR in barbel in order to assess their suitability in biological effect monitoring of dioxin-like compounds and metals. All three genes responded as expected in laboratory tests, using model inducers. Hepatic CYP1A mRNA levels showed a twof
