Environmental exposures and development.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Summarize recent studies exploring the relationship between paternal and maternal environmental exposures to chemicals before, at the time of and after conception to adverse developmental outcomes including preterm birth, death, structural and functional abnormalities and growth restriction. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have demonstrated that human pregnancy and development are vulnerable to environmental exposures of the father and mother to chemical, biological and physical agents. Exposures associated with adverse developmental outcomes include air and water pollution

Environmental exposure and leptospirosis, Peru.

Human infection by leptospires has highly variable clinical manifestations, which range from subclinical infection to fulminant disease. We conducted a population-based, cross-sectional seroepidemiologic study in Peru to determine potential relationships of environmental context to human exposure to Leptospira and disease associated with seroconversion. Three areas were studied: a flooded, urban slum in the Peruvian Amazon city of Iquitos; rural, peri-Iquitos villages; and a desert shantytown near Lima. Seroprevalence in Belen was 28% (182/650); in rural areas, 17% (52/316); and in a desert sh

Trichloroethylene: environmental and occupational exposure.

Trichloroethylene is used in paint strippers, rug cleaners, spot removers, typewriter correction fluid and industrial cleaners. It is a common environmental contaminant, detected in over one-third of hazardous waste sites and in 10 percent of groundwater sources. Acute workplace exposure above acceptable levels can cause neurologic, respiratory and hepatic problems. The health effects of prolonged occupational and environmental low-level exposure are probably minimal, but whether such exposure poses a risk remains controversial. Although trichloroethylene has been shown to cause cancer in some

Mesothelioma associated with environmental exposures.

BACKGROUND: The main sources of environmental, non-occupational exposure to asbestos or asbestiform fibres are: a) industrial plants in which asbestos was used in the production process; b) asbestos "in place" (mainly in buildings); c) contaminated soils. The association of these exposures with increasing risk of mesothelioma has been documented since 1960 in many places. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: The present paper is aimed at describing the main results of studies performed in the locations with soils naturally contaminated with asbestos or asbestiform fibres. Environmental exposure data and a

[Health effects of environmental noise exposure].

In the EU 27 countries about 100 million persons are exposed to road traffic noise above 55 dB (LDEN) according to the European Environment Agency. Exposure to railway noise affects 16 million individuals, aircraft noise 4 million and industry noise 1 million persons. Although the proportion of people reporting to be annoyed by noise exposure is substantial, health effects of noise is rarely an issue in general practitioners' consultations. According to stress models chronic noise exposure results in an increased allostatic load by direct physiological responses as well as psychological stress

Environmental radon exposure and childhood leukemia.

Despite the fact that animal and human epidemiological studies confirmed a link between radon exposure in homes and increased risk of lung cancer in general population, other types of cancers induced by radon, such as leukemia, have not been consistently demonstrated. The aim of this review was to summarize data published thus far from ecological and case-control studies in exposed populations, taking into account radon dose estimation and evidence of radon-induced genotoxicity, in an effort to clarify the correlation between home radon exposure and incidence of childhood leukemia. Among 12 ec

Environmental VOC exposure and mental health.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major atmospheric pollutants with potential neurotoxic effects, yet their impacts on population-level mental health remain understudied. Here, we develop an integrative framework that combines the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, epidemiological analysis, and network toxicology to assess the mental health risks of ambient VOC exposure across China. We simulated the spatiotemporal distribution of 33 VOC species at a 36 km × 36 km resolution using CMAQ, driven by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Ground-based observations and sa

Cerebral consequences of environmental noise exposure.

The importance of noise exposure as a major environmental determinant of public health is being increasingly recognized. While in recent years a large body evidence has emerged linking environmental noise exposure mainly to cardiovascular disease, much less is known concerning the adverse health effects of noise on the brain and associated neuropsychiatric outcomes. Despite being a relatively new area of investigation, indeed, mounting research and conclusive evidence demonstrate that exposure to noise, primarily from traffic sources, may affect the central nervous system and brain, thereby co

Environmental exposure to organophosphorus nerve agents.

Exposure to organophosphorus nerve agents, the most deadly chemical warfare agents, is possible in a variety of situations, such as destruction of chemical warfare agents, terrorist attacks, armed conflicts or accidents in research laboratories and storage facilities. Hundreds of thousands of tons of chemical munitions were disposed of at the sea in the post World War II period, with European, Russian, Japanese and US coasts being the most affected. Sulfur mustard, Lewisite and nerve agents appear to be the most frequently chemical warfare agents disposed of at the sea. Addressing the overall

Environmental monitoring of secondhand smoke exposure.

The complex composition of secondhand smoke (SHS) provides a range of constituents that can be measured in environmental samples (air, dust and on surfaces) and therefore used to assess non-smokers' exposure to tobacco smoke. Monitoring SHS exposure (SHSe) in indoor environments provides useful information on the extent and consequences of SHSe, implementing and evaluating tobacco control programmes and behavioural interventions, and estimating overall burden of disease caused by SHSe. The most widely used markers have been vapour-phase nicotine and respirable particulate matter (PM). Numerous

Environmental asbestos exposure and cancer mortality.

From 1970 to 1980, mortality from cancer of the lung and stomach was analyzed in a town with asbestos deposits and in a town with asbestos processing. The populations of the entire country, the province, the district, and of all communities of the same size and agricultural index were used as references. In the town with asbestos contamination of air and water from natural tremolite deposits and an endemic occurrence of pleural plaques, no increased risk for lung or stomach cancer was found. In the town with asbestos cement production lung cancer rates were lower in males and higher in females

Environmental exposures and pediatric kidney health.

Environmental exposures are increasingly associated with kidney and cardiometabolic disease in children. This review summarizes current understanding of the potentially hazardous effects of air pollution, chemical toxicants, and heavy metal contamination on pediatric kidney health and cardiometabolic risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD), as well as the potentially protective effect of green space. We highlight the critical windows of childhood development, during which the kidneys may have varying susceptibility to environmental exposures. We also discuss challenges and possible solut

Current understanding of environmental exposures and sarcoidosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sarcoidosis is a heterogeneous disease with unknown etiology. The role of exposures in sarcoidosis is incompletely understood. Gene-environment interactions are likely an important aspect of sarcoidosis etiology and phenotypes. This review critically evaluates the current literature regarding the role of environmental factors in sarcoidosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Environmental factors are likely a key aspect of the pathophysiology of sarcoidosis; identifying these factors is an important and active part of sarcoidosis research, with implications for early identification and pote

Environmental Exposures and Congenital Heart Disease.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital abnormality worldwide, affecting 8 to 12 infants per 1000 births globally and causing >40% of prenatal deaths. However, its causes remain mainly unknown, with only up to 15% of CHD cases having a determined genetic cause. Exploring the complex relationship between genetics and environmental exposures is key in understanding the multifactorial nature of the development of CHD. Multiple population-level association studies have been conducted on maternal environmental exposures and their association with CHD, including evaluating the e
