[Teaching practice of anaerobic digestion microorganisms in Microbiology for Environmental Engineering].

Anaerobic digestion is a process in which organic matter is converted into methane and carbon dioxide through the catalysis of bacteria and archaea under anaerobic conditions. It is of great significance for the natural material cycle and sustainable development. Currently, textbooks of Microbiology for Environmental Engineering provide little information on the functional microorganisms involved in anaerobic digestion. As a result, students have a limited understanding of the complexity and applications of anaerobic microorganisms. To address this issue, we carried out teaching reforms. In th

A structured approach to onboarding undergraduate researchers in environmental microbiology laboratories.

Undergraduate students must be trained in foundational microbiological techniques to successfully perform undergraduate research in environmental microbiology laboratories. Many students obtain this training during Microbiology laboratory courses, but others enter research laboratories before completing such coursework or are enrolled in departments or majors where these courses are not required. We present a brief (~2-3 week), low-cost onboarding module designed for research laboratories to introduce students to foundational techniques in environmental microbiology. Through integrated activit

Pathogenicity and virulence of Listeria monocytogenes: A trip from environmental to medical microbiology.

Listeria monocytogenes is a saprophytic gram-positive bacterium, and an opportunistic foodborne pathogen that can produce listeriosis in humans and animals. It has evolved an exceptional ability to adapt to stress conditions encountered in different environments, resulting in a ubiquitous distribution. Because some food preservation methods and disinfection protocols in food-processing environments cannot efficiently prevent contaminations, L. monocytogenes constitutes a threat to human health and a challenge to food safety. In the host, Listeria colonizes the gastrointestinal tract, crosses t

Micro/Nanoplastics and Periodontitis: An Environmental Microbiology Perspective on Oral Retention and Systemic Risk.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) have now been detected in human blood, placenta, and arterial tissue, yet the oral cavity has received strikingly little mechanistic attention despite serving as a primary portal of environmental exposure and a local site of polymer generation from dental and oral-care materials. This narrative review addresses that gap from an environmental microbiology perspective, synthesizing recent literature on periodontal disease, chronic low-grade inflammation, oral biofilms, dental materials, microbial-plastic interactions, and systemic chronic disease risk. Unlike prior

Comparative evaluation of two high-throughput qPCR systems for environmental and clinical microbiology applications.

UNLABELLED: High-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) is useful for the simultaneous quantification of various genes, such as microbial source tracking (MST) markers, fecal indicator bacteria, pathogens, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) for environmental and clinical studies. While multiple HT-qPCR platforms are commercially available, their performance has rarely been directly compared. In this study, we evaluated and compared two commonly used HT-qPCR platforms, the Takara Bio SmartChip and the Standard BioTools Biomark HD system, using TaqMan probe-based MST assays and intercalating

Impact of customized electronic duplicate order alerts on microbiology test ordering: Financial and environmental cost savings.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate cost savings after implementation of customized electronic duplicate order alerts. DESIGN: Alerts were implemented for microbiology tests at the largest public hospital in Victoria, Australia. These alerts were designed to pop up at the point of test ordering to inform the clinician that the test had previously been ordered and to suggest appropriate reordering time frames and indications. RESULTS: In a 6-month audit of urine culture (our most commonly ordered test) after alert implementation, 2,904 duplicate requesters proceeded with the request and 2,549 tests were c

Relationship between biochemical, environmental, and microbiological changes with the success rate of fertilization techniques.

The success rate for the evaluation of the results of techniques of Assisted Human Reproduction implies the occurrence of pregnancy with a live, healthy child. There are reports of the association between chemical and unhealthy environmental air conditions (bacteria, dust, particulates and volatile compounds) and reducing the success rate of embryo production and the occurrence of pregnancy. This paper reviews available information about the interference of biochemical, environmental and microbiological changes with the success of the assisted reproductive technique.

Estimation of the environmental risk posed by landfills using chemical, microbiological and ecotoxicological testing of leachates.

The leachates from 22 municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill sites in Southern Poland were characterized by evaluation of chemical, microbiological and ecotoxicological parameters. Chemical analyses were mainly focused on the identification of the priority hazardous substances according to Directive on Priority Substances, 2008/105/EC (a daughter directive of the WFD) in leachates. As showed, only five substances (Cd, Hg, hexachlorobutadiene, pentachlorobenzene and PAHs) were detected in the leachates. The compounds tested were absent or present at very low concentrations. Among them, only PAHs

Surface microbiological surveillance in a crowded emergency department: interplay of environmental pressure, construction, and disinfection efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Environmental surface contamination in emergency departments (EDs) is a recognized contributor to pathogen transmission. However, its relationship with organizational and environmental stressors remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: Between January and November 2025, monthly microbiological surface surveillance was conducted in a tertiary ED with approximately 70,000 annual visits. Standardized sampling using contact plates (25 cm2) targeted predefined sites, including high-touch surfaces, equipment, and walls. Indicator organisms included Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with drinking water in north-eastern Italy, August 2019: microbiological and environmental investigations.

Cryptosporidium is a leading global cause of waterborne disease, with many reported outbreaks related to main water supplies. In August 2019, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis involving 80 cases occurred among 114 vacationers in a small municipality located in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, north-eastern Italy. After excluding a potential food-borne outbreak, the epidemiological investigation focussed on the hypothesis of a waterborne outbreak. This was confirmed by the finding of Cryptosporidium oocysts in stools of the cases and in water samples from the municipal water network. Molecular char

Environmental factors associated with etiology of microbiologically confirmed reconstructive breast implant infections: impact on clinical management and treatment.

Even if wide differences exist in the incidence of Gram-negative infections following breast cancer implant reconstructions (2-20%), its occurrence needs to be considered to optimize antibiotic therapy, which is usually directed towards Gram-positive cocci. There is a general notion on the possible source of Gram-negative microorganisms during outdoor activities. For this reason, we administered a specific questionnaire to infected patients to investigate this aspect. In 450 consecutive implant reconstructions between January 1, 2016 and March 31, 2018, 27 patients (6%) developed proven infect
