Eosinophilic esophagitis is a recently defined condition that has dramatically increased in prevalence in the last several decades. It may occur at any age, but the clinical presentation in young children is often more vague than the classic solid food dysphagia and food impacting that are the major presenting symptoms of eosinophilic esophagitis in adults and adolescents. Successful therapies exist, including medications and dietary modifications, but disease typically recurs when the intervention is discontinued.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a relatively new disease that has reached an incidence similar to that of Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis. With this increased presence, greater recognition is essential. This applies both to children with nonspecific but potentially debilitating symptoms and to adults who have spent years behaviorally compensating for narrow esophageal strictures. The pathogenesis of EoE is rapidly being unraveled and is based on initiation of a type II allergic response to specific food antigens, leading to dense esophageal eosinophilia, chronic inflammation, and esopha

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic disorder characterized by symptoms of esophageal dysfunction and esophageal inflammation with intraepithelial eosinophils. EoE represents an important cause of upper gastrointestinal morbidity. Primary care providers are pivotal for timely and accurate recognition of symptoms of eosinophilic esophagitis, for facilitating diagnoses through specialist referrals, and for understanding management strategies. This process begins with a thorough understanding of the clinical features of EoE, its associated atopic conditions, and its evolving epidemiology.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, eosinophil-predominant inflammatory condition that can affect esophageal mucosa at any age. Distinguished from gastroesophageal reflux disease in the mid 1990's, it has seemed to be increasingly prevalent, and is usually a manifestation of food allergy. The endoscopic and histologic features are well described. The clinical manifestations vary considerably by age, with adolescents and adults complaining primarily of dysphagia. Younger children may present with pain, vomiting, other evidence for food allergy, or feeding difficulties. Treatment option

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eosinophilic esophagitis is a new disease commonly confused with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Because of different treatments, recognition of eosinophilic esophagitis is important.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent work further characterizes the allergic response, demonstrating a population of eosinophils different from gut and blood that specifically homes to the esophagus in eosinophilic esophagitis. Further data suggest a multi-step allergy process starting with an atopic skin response that later primes the esophagus on further allergen exposure. Diagnosis of eosinophilic esop

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) was first described in the early 1990s. Initially a rarity, it is now the most common cause of dysphagia for solid foods in young adults. Its prevalence is estimated to be 1:2000. Mechanistically, EoE is characterized by a chronic type‑2 T‑helper cell (Th2) inflammation of the esophagus which is triggered by food allergens. It often occurs in association with other Th2-mediated diseases, such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. EoE is diagnosed based on an esophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsies of the esophageal epitheliu

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an atopic disease in which eosinophils infiltrate the esophageal mucosa and may result in a variety of upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Chief among these are dysphagia, heartburn, and food bolus obstruction in adults whereas children often present with abdominal pain or vomiting. Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic condition that if not detected and left untreated could lead to the development of subepithelial fibrosis and esophageal stenosis. The diagnosis of EoE is confirmed in a patient presenting with characteristic EoE symptoms, classic signs on endosco

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is defined by symptoms related to esophageal dysfunction, persistent esophageal eosinophilia, and exclusion of other etiologies that may be contributing to the condition. EoE is different from erosive esophagitis. In children, symptoms vary by age groups, such as feeding disorders in 2 year olds; vomiting in 8 year olds; and abdominal pain, dysphagia, and/or food impaction in adolescents. Most adults present with dysphagia, food impaction, heartburn, or chest pain. Common endoscopic features in adults with EoE include linear furrows (creases that orient longitudi

Esophagitis is the first cause of dysphagia and food impaction in a young male adult. Eosinophilic esophagitis is a clinical and pathological entity with involvement limited to the oesophagus. Eosinophilic esophagitis is associated with allergy and atopy. Most common in Caucasians, with 3:1 male predominance. Endoscopic findings are unspecific. Clinical and histological diagnosis has to be confirmed by unresponsiveness to proton pump inhibitor. Recommended first therapeutic approach: topical corticoids.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) is a chronic esophageal inflammatory disease mediated by oral antigens with the infiltration of eosinophilic granulocytes. EE can lead to various reflux-like symptoms including dysphagia, progressive strictures and bolus obstruction. EE mostly affects young male population and is associated with atopic disorders and sensitization to oral antigens. Environmental (antigens) and genetic factors (eotaxin-3) have been reported to play role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Symptoms and histological changes are reversible by the elimination of the allergens and the us

BACKGROUND: Esophagitis is an increasingly diagnosed disease. Patients with gastroesophagic reflux, dysphagia, vomiting or abdominal pain, with a torpid response to the treatment, could be suffering from it.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 37 year-old male patient with background of gastroesophagic reflux and dysphagia for solids since 2002, self-limited diarrhea episodes and intolerance to alcoholic drinks due to epigastric pain. Skin prick tests, specific IgE, histamine release test and basophil activation test were carried out.
RESULTS: Skin prick test to the usual allergens with negative result;

Eosinophilic esophagitis is a disease that has moved from relative obscurity, known to a few pediatricians, to one of emerging interest and attention in both the pediatric and adult literature. In part, this is due to the underrecognition of the disease, its increasing description in adults, and the fact that it may be a great imitator of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Symptoms may be protean including heartburn, dysphagia, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain accompanied by a history of atopic illnesses. Similarly, endoscopic and radiographic appearances may vary, ranging from stricture and

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated esophageal inflammatory disease that is becoming more widely recognized as a cause of feeding difficulties in infants and young children, as well as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)-like symptoms, dysphagia, and food impaction in children and adolescents. The diagnosis of EoE is clinicopathologic, based on endoscopic, histologic, and clinical findings. Patients with suspected eosinophilic esophagitis require an endoscopy with biopsies. The diagnosis requires the presence of 15 or more intraepithelial eosinophils/HPF in at least

The eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs) are chronic, immune-mediated conditions characterized clinically by GI symptoms and histologically by pathologic infiltration of the GI tract by eosinophils. The most well-studied is eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), but non-EoE EGIDs are becoming more frequently encountered. These have traditionally been classified by the predominant location inflammation, including eosinophilic gastritis (EoG; stomach only), eosinophilic enteritis (EoN; small bowel only), and eosinophilic colitis (EoC; colon only).(1, 2) However, multiple locations can be invo

OBJECTIVE: Eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs) are a rare group of disorders that can have varied clinical presentations dependent on the involved segment within the gastrointestinal tract. Eosinophilic gastritis presents with abdominal pain or vomiting, eosinophilic gastroenteritis presents with diarrhea and anemia or hypoalbuminemia, and eosinophilic colitis can present with diarrhea or bloody stools. These nonspecific symptoms remain poorly understood in their relation to the underlying pathogenesis, but a significant percentage of patients have atopy. In this review, we discuss

INTRODUCTION: There is a complex interrelationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) potentially promoting the occurrence and modulating severity of each other reciprocally. Presence of Barrett's esophagus (BE) is a defining factor for the diagnosis of GERD. While several studies investigated the potential impact of concomitant GERD on the presentation and course of EoE, little was known with regards to BE in EoE patients.
METHODS: We analyzed prospectively collected clinical, endoscopic, and histological data from patients enrolled in the Swiss
