Revision of Thraulus Eaton 1881 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae: Choroterpinae).

The genus Thraulus is widespread throughout much of the Eastern Hemisphere. Since Eaton established Thraulus in 1881, 62 species have, at one time or another, been placed in this genus. Thirty-eight of those species were eventually moved to other genera. Any comprehensive study of the remaining species, based on the published literature, is difficult as they were described by many authors, using different criteria, over a period of 142 years. The purpose of this study was to redescribe this genus, based on previously described species and nine new species, and to provide a format for future ta

A new species of Languidipes Hubbard (Ephemeroptera, Polymitarcyidae) from Borneo.

Pericarditis is the most frequent pericardial syndrome and a common cause of chest pain in emergency and cardiology practice. Over the past 2 decades, its management has moved from largely empirical anti‑inflammatory treatment toward a mechanism‑based, risk‑stratified, and imaging‑supported approach. Diagnosis remains clinical, based on the presence of typical chest pain, pericardial rub, electrocardiographic changes, and pericardial effusion; yet, inflammatory biomarkers and multimodality imaging, especially cardiac magnetic resonance, increasingly support diagnostic confidence, differential

The imagos of some enigmatic members of the Hermanella complex (Ephemeroptera, Leptophlebiidae).

The imago stages of three species of the Hermanella complex are described mostly based on material from Roraima, northern Brazil: Hydrosmilodon gilliesae, Hydromastodon sallesi and Leentvaaria palpalis. Male imagos of Hydrosmilodon gilliesae and Leentvaaria palpalis both have a pair of large, broad projections at the posterior margin of the styliger plate, nearly covering the penis lobes; in Leentvaaria palpalis, however, these projections are fused. The male imago of Hydromastodon sallesi resembles Hydrosmilodon plagatus in that both species have a styliger plate with a robust projection that

Toxicity of endosulfan to Atalophlebia spp. (Ephemeroptera) in the laboratory, mesocosm, and field.

A series of single-species toxicity tests was conducted in the laboratory and in outdoor stream mesocosms. The mayfly nymphs of Atalophlebia spp. (A. av2 and A. av6) were exposed to the organochlorine pesticide endosulfan for either 12- or 48-h periods, with mortality recorded after 96 h. For both exposure periods, the lethal concentration (LC50 and LC 10) values were not significantly different between laboratory and mesocosm single-species tests, suggesting that the absence of natural environmental conditions and biological interactions in laboratory single-species tests did not influence th

Taxonomic validation of Ephoron yunnanensis Zhou, 2002 (nomen nudum) (Ephemeroptera, Polymitarcyidae).

Ephoron yunnanensis Zhou, 2002 is considered as a nomen nudum since only mentioned in an unpublished Ph.D. thesis and therefore not officially validated. This study validates the species based on specimens from China (Yunnan Province) and Thailand (Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai Provinces). The species is formally described here for the first time and illustrated. Our morphological evidence and COI data support its independent species status. Additionally, the egg of this species is described. Diagnostic characters, distributions, and keys for both the nymphal and imaginal stages of all known Thai

A new species of Campsurus Eaton, 1868 (Ephemeroptera: Polymitarcyidae) from Brazil.

Campsurus is the most species-rich genus in Polymitarcyidae, and it is divided into four groups. A new species is described and illustrated here based on male imagos. Campsurus molinerii sp. nov. seems to be similar to C. nessimiani, C. dasilvai, and C. cuyuniensis because of the shape of penes and pedestal. The new species differs from them by the main penis lobe being expanded laterally and slightly curved ventrally, with the apex acute and curved ventrally outwards, the apical portion almost cylindrical with apex in ventral view pointed, secondary membranous lobe cylindrical and relatively

Reared adults of Potamanthellus unicutibius Nguyen & Bae, 2003 from China (Ephemeroptera, Neoephemeridae).

BACKGROUND: The nymphs of Potamanthellus unicutibius Nguyen & Bae, 2003 possess filtering mouthparts and modified fore-legs. However, no adults are known. NEW INFORMATION: In this study, both nymphal and imaginal stages of this species were collected and reared from China. Morphological examination reveals that these specimens differ markedly from all other members of Potamanthellus Lestage, 1931. In addition to the filtering nymphal morphology, the males of this species are characterised by more distinctly developed penes, longer tibiae and cerci and smaller compound eyes compared to those o

New Stage and Species Description on Brazilian Thraulodes Ulmer, 1920 (Ephemeroptera, Leptophlebiidae).

We examined material from two poorly documented areas in Brazil concerning the mayfly genus Thraulodes: Minas Gerais, the largest state in Southeastern Brazil, but also the least studied regarding mayflies; and Tocantins, located in the North-Central area of the country. As a consequence of these efforts, we describe a new species from Minas Gerais based on imagos and nymphs, as well as the nymphs of Thraulodes solstitium Orlando, Salles, Boldrini & Krolow, 2021. Two new species of the genus Notacanthurus from China (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae, Ecdyonurinae).

Previously, only three of seven species in the Asian genus Notacanthurus were reported both nymphs and imagoes, and no Chinese species was found. Here two new species collected from China, which are named as Notacanthurus maculatus sp. n. and N. lamellosus sp. n. respectively, are described and pictured in detail. The nymph of N. maculatus sp. n. has following combined characters: posterior margin of sternum IX straight, claws with two subapical denticles, and gills V-VI with arrow-like accessory lobes. The male imago has unspecialized anterior margin of head and Electrogena-like penis lobes.

Evidence of Silk-production in the Malpighian Tubules of Campsurinae (Ephemeroptera: Polymitarcyidae) Nymphs.

Insect silk glands exhibit diverse origins, including epidermal, labial, and Malpighian tubule-derived structures. Polymitarcyidae mayfly nymphs (Ephemeroptera) are known to secrete silk for constructing and lining their tunnels. However, the organ responsible for silk production in this ancient insect lineage is poorly understood. This study provides the first histological, histochemical, and ultrastructural analysis of the Malpighian tubules in Polymitarcyidae (Campsurus truncatus, Campsurus sp., and Tortopsis canum), identified as the likely source of their silk. We found specialized cells

Comparative Mitogenomics Reveals Gene Rearrangement and Phylogenetic Relationships in Siphlonuroidea (Insecta: Ephemeroptera).

Siphlonuroidea is a superfamily within Ephemeroptera, yet the phylogenetic relationships among its constituent families and their placement relative to other mayfly lineages remain unresolved. To address these questions, we generated and analyzed 16 newly assembled mitochondrial genomes from 14 species across Ephemeroptera, including three species of Ameletidae, four of Siphlonuridae, and nine mitochondrial genomes from seven species of Isonychiidae. Comparative mitogenomic analysis revealed two distinct tRNA gene rearrangement patterns within Siphlonuridae, including trnI-trnQ-trnM-trnQ-trnM-

The exact morphology of Oligoneuriella pallida (Hagen, 1855) from China (Ephemeroptera: Oligoneuriidae).

The brushlegged mayfly Oligoneuriella pallida (Hagen, 1855) has been reported from a series of countries by quite several different researchers, which also caused some confusions and inconsistence of morphological descriptions, and led to mis-identification of Chinese Oligoneuriella species historically. Here the Chinese oligoneuriid specimens are compared to European Oligoneuriella species morphologically and molecularly. The results show China harbors one species O. pallida. It can be diagnosed by nymphal long oval lamellae of gills I, fimbriate part of gill I longer than lamellae, subequal
