Hayes Yard virus: a novel ephemerovirus isolated from a bull with severe clinical signs of bovine ephemeral fever is most closely related to Puchong virus.

Bovine ephemeral fever is a vector-borne disease of ruminants that occurs in tropical and sub-tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia. The disease is caused by a rhabdovirus, bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV), which occurs as a single serotype globally. Although several other closely related ephemeroviruses have been isolated from cattle and/or arthropods, only kotonkan virus from Nigeria and (tentatively) Mavingoni virus from Mayotte Island in the Indian Ocean have been previously associated with febrile disease. Here, we report the isolation of a novel virus (Hayes Yard virus; HYV)

A Novel Ephemero- and a New CHeRI Orbivirus Isolated from a Dead Farmed White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Florida, USA.

A novel ephemeral fever rhabdovirus and a CHeRI orbivirus of a previously unidentified genetic lineage were isolated in mosquito cell line C6/36 cells as co-infecting agents from the spleen tissue of a dead farmed white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) in Florida. We designated the ephemeral fever rhabdovirus as Hardee County ephemerovirus 1, strain CHeRI ephemerovirus 1. The genetic sequences of the CHeRI orbivirus isolated in this work differ significantly from those of three previously described CHeRI orbivirus lineages. We designated this new virus as CHeRI orbivirus 4, strain CHe

Phylogenetic relationships of seven previously unclassified viruses within the family Rhabdoviridae using partial nucleoprotein gene sequences.

Partial nucleoprotein (N) gene sequences of the rhabdoviruses Obodhiang (OBOV), Kotonkon (KOTV), Rochambeau (RBUV), Kern canyon (KCV), Mount Elgon bat (MEBV), Kolongo (KOLV) and Sandjimba (SJAV) were generated and their phylogenetic positions within the family Rhabdoviridae were determined. Both OBOV and KOTV were placed within the genus Ephemerovirus. RBUV was joined to the same cluster, but more distantly. MEBV and KCV were grouped into a monophyletic cluster (putative genus) with Oita virus (OITAV). These three viruses, originating from different regions of the world, were all isolated from

Identification of the First CHeRI Orbivirus 3-5 Strain Isolated from a Dead Farmed White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) Whose Death Had Been Attributed to an Infection by Mule Deerpox Virus.

We report the isolation and coding complete genome sequences of a new CHeRI orbivirus from the spleen of a dead farmed white-tailed deer in Florida whose death was attributed to an infection by mule deerpox virus. Phylogenetic and genetic analyses support this new virus as the fifth strain of the CHeRI orbivirus 3 species, and we designated it CHeRI orbivirus 3-5. While our previous detections and isolations of CHeRI orbiviruses were from deer spleens that also contained epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus-2, or in one case, Hardee County ephemerovirus 1, no deerpox virus was isolated from the

Characterization of a recombinant Newcastle disease virus expressing the glycoprotein of bovine ephemeral fever virus.

Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) is caused by the arthropod-borne bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV), which is a member of the family Rhabdoviridae and the genus Ephemerovirus. BEFV causes an acute febrile infection in cattle and water buffalo. In this study, a recombinant Newcastle disease virus (NDV) expressing the glycoprotein (G) of BEFV (rL-BEFV-G) was constructed, and its biological characteristics in vitro and in vivo, pathogenicity, and immune response in mice and cattle were evaluated. BEFV G enabled NDV to spread from cell to cell. rL-BEFV-G remained nonvirulent in poultry and mice comp

Development of two competitive ELISAs based on monoclonal antibodies for the serological detection of Bovine ephemeral fever virus.

Bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV) is a member of the genus Ephemerovirus in the family Rhabdoviridae. It is an arthropod-borne virus transmitted by many species of midges and mosquitoes. It can cause severe economic consequences due to losses in milk production and the general condition of cattle and water buffalo. BEF occurs in some tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions of Africa, Australia, the Middle East and Asia with seasonal outbreaks, but its possible spread to other areas (e.g. Europe) cannot be excluded. Therefore, using and developing rapid diagnostic methods with optima

Bovine ephemeral fever: From underestimated illness to emerging threat - A review of pathogenesis, economic impact, and future control strategies.

Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) is an arthropod-borne viral disease caused by the bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV) of the genus Ephemerovirus in the family Rhabdoviridae. BEF affects domestic and wild ruminants, particularly cattle and water buffaloes. BEF outbreaks are seasonal in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia, aligning with the summer and autumn seasons in temperate zones and during the monsoons in tropical areas. Vectors, like biting midges (Culicoides spp.) and mosquitoes (Anopheles and Culex spp.), facilitate BEFV transmission. The disease presents a spectrum of clinical si

The Current Epizootiological Situation of Three Major Viral Infections Affecting Cattle in Egypt.

One of the major factors hindering efficient livestock production is the presence of high-impact infectious animal diseases, such as foot and mouth disease (FMD), lumpy skin disease (LSD), and bovine ephemeral fever (BEF), which are notable viral infections affecting cattle in Egypt, leading to significant economic losses. FMD is caused by the foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) of the genus Aphthovirus in the Picornaviridae family. LSD is caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) of Capripox genus within the Poxviridae family, subfamily Chordopoxvirinae. BEF is caused by bovine ephemeral feve

Bovine Arboviruses in Culicoides Biting Midges and Sentinel Cattle in Southern Japan from 2003 to 2013.

Epizootic congenital abnormalities, encephalomyelitis and febrile illnesses in cattle caused by arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are prevalent in Japan. Causative viruses including orthobunyaviruses, orbiviruses and rhabdovirus are thought to be transmitted by Culicoides biting midges. Recently, the incursions of several arboviruses, potentially Culicoides-borne, were newly confirmed in Japan. However, their spread pattern and exact vector species are currently uncertain. Attempts to isolate arboviruses from Culicoides biting midges and sentinel cattle were conducted in Kagoshima, located

Virome profiling of long-tailed marmots reveals tissue tropism and cross-species transmission of a diversity of uncharacterized mammalian viruses.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic land conversion and population encroachment into wildlife habitats are amplifying zoonotic risks through intensified human-livestock-wildlife contacts. As ecologically resilient rodents exhibiting dynamic population fluxes, long-tailed marmots (Marmota caudata) are crucial viral reservoirs in Central Asian ecosystems. Their sympatric coexistence with domestic herds creates sustained spillover risks, yet comprehensive virome characterization remains limited. This study employs a whole-virome profiling strategy to comprehensively characterize the viral diversity of 101

A Bayesian latent class estimation of the diagnostic accuracy of clinical examination and laboratory assays to identify bovine ephemeral fever virus infection in South African cattle.

Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) is an economically important vector-borne viral disease of cattle and water buffalo in Africa, Australia and parts of Asia. The control of BEF is centred around vaccination, and therefore accurate, early identification of disease outbreaks are key to minimize its economic and welfare impact. In Africa, control programs are hampered by limited diagnostic capabilities and poor infrastructure for rapid transportation of diagnostic specimens. The primary objective of this study was to estimate the sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of four tests, namely clinical exa
