Congenital phalangeal hypoplasia in Equidae.

Three cases of unilateral congenital phalangeal hypoplasia are described in 2 horses and 1 mule. Radiographic lesions include severe hypoplasia of the 3rd phalanx, and associated hypoplasia of the 2nd phalanx in 2 cases, and hypoplasia or aplasia of the navicular bone in 2 cases. All animals could ambulate but were lame. Two cases had palpable laxity at the level of the coronary band. Documented etiology was not determined for the dysgenesis, but possibilities include inherited transmission or an environmental teratogen.

[Renal cystic involvement in equidae].

Four types of abnormalities has been recorded on a study about cystic diseases of donkey's kidneys, collected at the Madrid Slaughter-house. These four categories are as follows: a) simple isolated renal cysts; b) multiple renal cysts; c) adult polycystic kidneys; and d) focal renal cystic dysplasia and hypoplasia. From a total of 26 cases macroscopically and histopathologically studied, 7 exhibed unilateral and 19 bilateral lesions. Different combinations of the four types above mentioned were found when both kidneys were affected. The evidence of some of the cysts being communicated with nor

Comparison of three techniques for intestinal anastomosis in Equidae.

Thirteen horses and ponies were used to evaluate an anastomotic technique utilizing a modified Gambee suture pattern. The modified Gambee technique was compared with a single-row everting technique and a double-row inverting technique. The double-row inverting technique predisposed to intestinal obstruction and resulted in minimal adhesions. The everting technique predisposed to leakage of intestinal contents and subsequent peritonitis. Adhesions were formed at the site of the anastomosis to such an extent as to jeopardize the proper position of the bowel. The technique did not cause any lumin

Mechanics of evolutionary digit reduction in fossil horses (Equidae).

Digit reduction is a major trend that characterizes horse evolution, but its causes and consequences have rarely been quantitatively tested. Using beam analysis on fossilized centre metapodials, we tested how locomotor bone stresses changed with digit reduction and increasing body size across the horse lineage. Internal bone geometry was captured from 13 fossil horse genera that covered the breadth of the equid phylogeny and the spectrum of digit reduction and body sizes, from Hyracotherium to Equus To account for the load-bearing role of side digits, a novel, continuous measure of digit reduc

Bacterial and fungal isolates from Equidae with ulcerative keratitis.

Gram-negative bacteria were the most common microbial isolates from 38 eyes of 37 horses with ulcerative keratitis. Pseudomonas sp, Enterobacter group, and Acinetobacter sp were the most prevalent. Fungi were cultured from 15 eyes and included 7 genera, with Aspergillus sp being the most prevalent. Ten of the eyes with fungal keratitis had been treated with corticosteroids. Eleven of 38 eyes had mixed bacterial and fungal infections. Clinically, the most severe cases were those in which Aspergillus and gram-negative bacteria existed in a mixed infection. On the basis of susceptibility testing,

A comparison of the intestinal helminth communities of Equidae in Southern Africa.

The intestinal helminth communities of 8 horses, 12 donkeys, 21 Hartmann's mountain zebras, and 44 Burchell's zebras were compared using the original data from 6 studies in South Africa and Namibia. Necropsy and worm recovery techniques were comparable between the studies. Sixty helminth species (58 nematode, 1 cestode, and 1 trematode species) were recorded. There were significant differences in the helminth community structures of the 4 Equus species. The helminth communities of the 2 closely related zebra subspecies were most similar, and they jointly shared 7 helminth species with donkeys

[Establishment of a re-entrant ileo-cecal fistula in Equidae].

A re-entrant cannulation of the digestive tract was performed in Equidae (ponies and donkeys) between the distal extremity of the ileum and the base of the caecum. The operative technique was conceived to avoid risks of infection of the peritoneal cavity: the openings of the ileum and of the caecum were achieved only after the closure of the abdominal wall incision. Two donkeys were still alive ten months after the operation. This method can provide a convenient model for digestibility studies in Equidae, particularly for assessment of the pre-caecal digestibility.

Perioperative intratumoral administration of cisplatin for treatment of cutaneous tumors in equidae.

Twenty-seven horses (and 1 mule) with 32 histologically confirmed cutaneous tumors were studied to evaluate the effects of intratumoral injection of cisplatin initiated at the time of surgery. As a result of surgery, 9 of the wounds were closed primarily (5 sarcoids, 4 carcinomas) and 23 were left open to granulate (16 sarcoids, 6 carcinomas, 1 hamartoma). Chemotherapy consisted of 4 treatment sessions of intratumoral injection of cisplatin in purified sesame oil at 2-week intervals. The first treatment session was administered intraoperatively. Uveitis and blindness in a closed herd of Equidae following leptospiral infection.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the ocular findings, chronology of disease, and serum leptospiral titers in a group of horses, mules, and donkeys following an outbreak of leptospirosis. METHODS: Fifty Equidae in central North Carolina had ophthalmic examinations and serum leptospiral microscopic agglutination test (MAT) titers performed every 3-6 months for 24 months followed by a final examination at 34 months. RESULTS: Throughout the nearly three-year study period, 17 horses (34%; 17/49 horses) developed signs of uveitis; 20 eyes (20/34; 58.8%) of these 17 horses were visual at the initial examinat

[Preliminary studies on the incidence of Filaziae in equidae in the Netherlands (author's transl)].

Biopsies of the skin of the umbilical area were taken from ninety-nine horses and one donkey, all reared in the Netherlands. The biopsy specimens were examined for the presence of microfilariae by a recovery procedure. Microfilariae were identified in eight horses. These were microfilariae of the species Onchocerca cervicalis in each case.

Validation of a Commercial Glanders ELISA as an Alternative to the CFT in International Trade of Equidae.

Glanders, caused by Burkholderia (B.) mallei is a notifiable zoonotic disease in equidae. For international trade and movement of equids, certificates of negative serological test results for antibodies against B. mallei are required. To date, the complement fixation test (CFT) is the mandatory test to issue these health certificates. The CFT is difficult to standardize and, due to its poor specificity, often leads to false-positive reactions resulting in trade restrictions with considerable financial consequences. In the present study, the new ID Screen Glanders Double Antigen Multispecies EL

Chromosomal rearrangements in a Somali wild ass pedigree, Equus africanus somaliensis (Perissodactyla, Equidae).

Chromosome analyses were conducted on 15 animals in a pedigree of Somali wild ass, Equus africanus somaliensis. G- and C-banded karyotypes are presented for the first time on this endangered species. The diploid number ranged from 62 to 64. Numerical chromosomal variation was the result of a centric fission which was accompanied by a heterochromatic deletion. The fission polymorphism involved acrocentric elements 19 and 21 as determined by G-banding. These autosomes are homologous to those involved in centric fission/fusion polymorphisms in other equids: E. asinus (domestic donkey), E. hemionu

Great diversity of Piroplasmida in Equidae in Africa and Europe, including potential new species.

Piroplasms are Apicomplexa tick-borne parasites distributed worldwide. They are responsible for piroplasmosis (theileriosis and babesiosis) in Vertebrata and are therefore of medical and economic importance. Herein, we developed a new real time PCR assay targeting the 5.8S rRNA gene and three standard PCR assays, targeting 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, and cox1 genes, for the detection of piroplasmids. These assays were first optimized and screened for specificity and sensitivity. Then, they were used to study a total of 548 blood samples and 97 ticks collected from Equidae in four sub-Saharan countries

Impact of karyotype organization on interlocus recombination between T cell receptor genes in Equidae.

The T cell receptor (TCR) genes (TRA, TRB, TRD and TRG) reside in 3 different chromosomal regions. During the maturation of T lymphocytes, the TCR genes are rearranged by site-specific recombination, a process that also predisposes T cells to aberrant rearrangements. Illegitimate recombination between the TCR genes occurs at a low level in healthy individuals, but this frequency may correlate with the risk of lymphoma. The aim of this work was to investigate interlocus recombination in equids. Illegitimate rearrangements were studied in peripheral blood lymphocytes by FISH with painting and BA

Serum levels of type III procollagen peptide in Equidae before and after intestinal ischemia.

Serum levels of type III procollagen peptide (P-III-P) were measured by radioimmunoassay in clinically normal adult ponies (n = 15) and horses (n = 10). The mean serum levels of P-III-P from the ponies, 10.4 +/- 2.9 (SD) ng/mL, and the horses, 12.2 +/- 2.6 (SD) ng/mL, were not significantly different. Segments of jejunum were made ischemic to induce fibrous peritoneal adhesions in two ponies, and serum P-III-P levels were measured on days 4, 5, 7, 14, and 21. An exploratory celiotomy on day 21 revealed that the ischemic injury had induced fibrosis of the mesentery and bowel, but no adhesions h
