Grayanotoxin poisoning in animals following the ingestion of Ericaceae plants.

Plant poisoning in animals, often associated with wild and ornamental species, is a significant concern in veterinary medicine. Due to clinical signs observed in humans after consuming "mad honey", interest in grayanotoxins, produced by Ericaceae plants, has increased. However, effects on animal health have been scarcely addressed despite their interest for veterinary toxicology. This systematic review, following PRISMA guidelines, identified 31 records of grayanotoxin poisoning in animals following the ingestion of plants, affecting a total of 111 livestock and 11 companion animals. Cases wer

Novel Arctic colonization origin of the Arctic lineage in Phyllodoce (Ericaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Arctic flora is widely considered evolutionarily young, reflecting the emergence of unprecedentedly cold environments during the late Pliocene-early Pleistocene transition. Although many Arctic plants are thought to be derived from temperate alpine ancestors, the historical relationship between high-latitude occupancy and lineage divergence remains unclear. Specifically, it remains unclear whether Arctic lineages originated from ancestors that already occupied high-latitude regions before the Arctic environment formed or originated through colonization after the Arctic

A global blueberry phylogeny: Evolution, diversification, and biogeography of Vaccinieae (Ericaceae).

Vaccinieae is a morphologically diverse and species-rich (∼1430 species) tribe in Ericaceae. Although the majority of diversity is tropical, Vaccinieae are best known for temperate crops (i.e., blueberries, cranberries, and lingonberries) in Vaccinium. Vaccinium itself (∼500 species) has been previously suggested as highly polyphyletic and taxonomic boundaries among many of the other genera in the tribe remain uncertain. We assessed the evolutionary history of Vaccinieae with phylogenomic analyses based on a target-enrichment dataset containing 256 low-copy nuclear loci and 210 species represe

The Influence of Water Extraction Methods on the Isolation of Polyphenols and Tannins from Various Ericaceae and Rosaceae Species.

Most polyphenols (and tannins in their composition), secondary plant metabolites with positive effects on the human body, are soluble in water, which makes them environmentally friendly and the most accessible solvent in everyday life. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of water extraction methods, hot water extraction and maceration, on the amounts of these compounds isolated from plants, compared with ultrasonic extraction, which is not readily available. Seven Ericaceae and four Rosaceae species were selected for study, whose leaves are used in folk and/or official medicine to

Vaccinium bidoupense (Ericaceae), a new species from Vietnam and Laos, with notes on V. petelotii and V. pseudobullatum.

Vaccinium bidoupense, a new species of Ericaceae from the Central Highlands of Vietnam and their vicinity in Laos, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to V. petelotii and V. pseudobullatum in its relatively large leaf blades and umbel-like inflorescence but differs in having the following combination of characters: pale red to salmon pink corollas, and longer pedicels, calyx lobes, corolla tubes and stamen filaments. The distinctness of V. bidoupense is further supported by its allopatric distribution relative to both V. petelotii and V. pseudobullatum. The

Cell size has pervasive effects on the functional composition and morphology of leaves: a case study in Rhododendron (Ericaceae).

The leaf economics spectrum (LES) characterizes a tradeoff between building a leaf for durability versus for energy capture and gas exchange, with allocation to leaf dry mass per projected surface area (LMA) being a key trait underlying this tradeoff. However, regardless of the biomass supporting the leaf, high rates of gas exchange are typically accomplished by small, densely packed stomata on the leaf surface, which is enabled by smaller genome sizes. Here, we investigate how variation in genome size-cell size allometry interacts with variation in biomass allocation (i.e. LMA) to influence t

Diversity-productivity relationships in ericaceous plants are influenced by interactions with ericoid mycorrhizal fungi.

The positive effect of plant diversity on ecosystem productivity is among the most widespread trends in ecosystem ecology. Most studies suggest that niche differences (complementarity) play a significant role in shaping these effects. As most plant species require mutualistic mycorrhizal fungi to access limiting nutrients, recent evidence suggests that these mutualisms may mediate the complementarity detected in plant studies. Yet, until now, previous studies have focused primarily on the role of mycorrhizal presence in altering these relationships, but no studies have examined the combined ef

Ericoid mycorrhizal symbiosis: theoretical background and methods for its comprehensive investigation.

Despite decades of intensive research (especially from 1970s to 1990s), the ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) hair root is still largely terra incognita and this simplified guide is intended to revive and promote the study of its mycobiota. Basic theoretical knowledge on the ErM symbiosis is summarized, followed by practical advices on Ericaceae root sample collection and handling, microscopic observations and photo-documentation of root fungal colonization, mycobiont isolation, maintenance and identification and resynthesis experiments with ericoid plants. The necessity of a proper selection of the r

Phylogenomics Clarifies Plastome Reduction and Phylogenetic Relationships in Monotropoideae.

Plastome evolution and biogeographic history remain poorly understood in mycoheterotrophic lineages. Here, we sequenced and assembled the complete plastome of Monotropa callistoma (Ericaceae), a fully mycoheterotrophic species, and compared it with other mycoheterotrophic plastomes. The M. callistoma plastome is 29,784 bp long, lacks the canonical quadripartite structure, and contains 40 genes, representing an intermediate level of reduction within Monotropoideae. Comparative analyses revealed extreme contraction in some lineages, including Sciaphila (12.8-21.5 kb), and a weak positive correla

Trait plasticity and adaptive strategies of vascular epiphytes to a large-scale experimental reduction of fog immersion in a tropical montane cloud forest.

PREMISE: Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) are characterized by frequent fog immersion and host a rich epiphyte community. Epiphytes rely on atmospheric inputs of water, making them susceptible to reductions in fog immersion, which are predicted with climate change. METHODS: We experimentally reduced the fog in a Peruvian TMCF to examine the ability of eight abundant species of vascular epiphytes in the families Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, Ericaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Piperaceae and Clusiaceae to respond to reduced fog immersion via plasticity in morphological and physiological traits.
