Paepalanthus acanthophyllus and P. bromelioides belong to the Eriocaulaceae family. According to the literature, secondary metabolites isolated in Paepalanthus have interesting biological activities. This research aimed to isolate constituents from the capitula of the mentioned species and to evaluate their cytotoxic, antimicrobial, and antiviral activities. Through maceration and several types of separation procedures, the crude extracts were produced, and the structures of constituents were identified mostly by nuclear magnetic resonance. Cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities were evaluated

The present work reports the effects of chemical elicitors and epigenetic modifiers on the production and diversification of secondary metabolites produced by Anthostomella brabeji - an endophytic fungus isolated from Paepalanthus planifolius (Eriocaulaceae). The fungus was cultivated under four different small-scale culture conditions in potato dextrose broth (PDB): PDB (control), PDB + Mg+2, PDB + Cu+2 and PDB + 5-AZA (5-azacytidine). The incorporation of Cu+2 into PDB medium yielded the most promising results as the most significant differences in the metabolic profile of A. brabeji were ob

In this study, was evaluated the chemical composition of a fraction from Syngonanthus nitens extract and its antimicrobial potential unloaded (Fr3) and loaded (F9Fr3) into a nanoemulsion (F9) composed of cholesterol as the oil phase (10%), polyoxyethylene 20-cetyl ether and soy phosphatidylcholine (2:1) as surfactant (20%), and a solution of phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) plus chitosan polymer dispersion (0.25%) as the aqueous phase (70%) to use for VVC treatment. Phytochemical procedures showed that Fr3 is rich in luteolin, which is responsible for the antimicrobial activity. F9 development showed

OBJECTIVES: Syngonanthus macrolepis, popularly known in Brazil as 'sempre-vivas', is a plant from the family Eriocaulaceae, it is found in the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia. The species contains a variety of constituents, including flavonoids with gastroprotective effect. In this work, a flavonoid-rich fraction (Sm-FRF) obtained from scapes of S. macrolepis was investigated for preventing gastric ulceration in mice and rats.
METHODS: The activity was evaluated in models of induced gastric ulcer (absolute ethanol, stress, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and pylorus ligation). The cyto

BACKGROUND: Vaginal infections caused by non-albicans species have become common in women of all age groups. The resistance of species such as Candida parapsilosis to the various antifungal agents is a risk factor attributed to these types of infections, which instigates the search for new sources of active compounds in vulvovaginal candidiasis (VCC) therapy.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the antifungal activity of Syngonanthus nitens Bong. (Ruhland) derivatives and employed a lipid nanoemulsion as a delivery system.'
METHODS: In this study, a lipid nanoemulsion was employed as a delivery

Eriocaulon sieboldianum (Sieb. & Zucc. ex Steud.), a genus of Eriocaulon in the Eriocaulaceae family, is an edible and medicinal plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. It was processed into healthcare beverages for expelling wind-heat, protecting eyes, and reducing blood fat. Also, it has been used with other herbs as Traditional Chinese herbal compound to treat cancer as adjuvants in tumor therapy in China. However, the active fractions and precise cellular mechanisms of E. sieboldianum extract remain to be illustrated. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of the active

The submersed macrophyte Utricularia inflata (inflated bladderwort) is a recent invader of Adirondack Mountain lakes (NY, USA). A 15-week greenhouse experiment and a 7-week field experiment were conducted to test the hypothesis that this rootless species fundamentally changes sediment chemistry through its suppression of the native short-statured species, Eriocaulon aquaticum. E. aquaticum has an extensive root system that releases oxygen into the sediment. In greenhouse conditions, E. aquaticum raised the porewater redox potential of otherwise bare sediment from 25 to 324 mV, lowered the sedi

BACKGROUND: Syngonanthus arthrotrichus and Syngonanthus bisulcatus, currently known for Comanthera aciphylla (Bong.) L.R.Parra & Giul. and Comanthera bisulcata (Koern.) L.R. Parra & Giul, popularly known in Brazil as "sempre-vivas," are plants from the family Eriocaulaceae. They are found in the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia. The species are known to be rich in flavonoids to which their gastroprotective activity has been attributed. In this research, experimental protocols were performed to elucidate the associated mechanisms of action.
METHODS: The activity was evaluated using induced gas

A new acylated flavonoid, 6,4'-dimethoxyquercetin-3-O-beta-D-6''[3,4,5-trihydroxy (E)-cinnamoyl]glucopyranoside, and a naphthopyranone dimer, named eriocauline, together with 2 other known flavonoids, 6-methoxyapigenin-7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and 6-methoxyapigenin-7-O-beta-D-allopyranoside, have been isolated from the capitulae of Eriocaulon ligulatum. The compounds were identified using spectroscopic methods (HR-ESI-MS, and 1-D and 2-D NMR). The methanol extract exhibited mutagenic activity in the Salmonella/microsome assay, in strains TA100, TA97a and TA102 and for dichloromethane extract

Vaginal infections caused by Candida krusei are a problem of extreme complexity due to the intrinsic resistance to azole drugs. The species Syngonanthus nitens (Bong.) Ruhland is a plant of the Eriocaulaceae family that has demonstrated promising antifungal activity. In phyto-formulation research, liquid crystal precursor mucoadhesive systems (LCPM) stand out as drug delivery systems for vaginal administration because they increase the activity and overcome the problems associated with plant-based medicines. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of the methanolic

Syngonanthus arthrotrichus SILVEIRA, popularly known as "sempre-vivas mini-saia," is found in mountains of the Espinhaço range in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. Extracts of this species contain several constituents, including flavonoids which may have antiulcerogenic activity. An ethanolic extract (EEOH), and flavonoid-rich (FRF) and flavonoid-deficient (FDF) fractions obtained from the scapes of S. arthrotrichus were investigated for their ability to prevent ulceration of the gastric mucosa in mice and rats. Cancers are generally recognized as the leading cause of death and a predominant barrier to prolonging life expectancy in both developed and developing countries. Emodin is a typical anthraquinone derivative from various plants that exhibits a wide spectrum of biological activities, such as anticancer, antibacterial, hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory activities. Much previous preclinical evidence has demonstrated that emodin exhibits reliable effects on several cancer types, including lung cancer, liver cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, leukemia, cervical cancer, and
