[Gastric mucosa in esophageal cancer].

The fundal mucous membrane was examined histologically and morphometrically in 92 patients with oesophageal cancer and 5 patients with cancer of the cardial part of the stomach greatly extended into the oesophagus; the mucosa was obtained by operational biopsy. In 4.1% of the observations the mucosa was unchanged, in 30.9 per cent superficial gastritis, in 26.8% moderately marked atrophic and in 38.2% marked atrophic gastritis were found. In most patients gastritis appeared to preceed the main disease. A certain correlation was observed between the degree of atrophy of the gastric mucosa and t

Charcoal deposits in the esophageal and gastric mucosa.

We report the case of a 75-yr-old woman referred for gastrointestinal endoscopy to investigate severe iron deficiency anemia. Black linear lesions were observed in the distal esophagus and stomach. Biopsies revealed aggregates of coarse black foreign material, which was later identified as charcoal. The patient's previous medical history included an antidepressant overdose 5 yr before the current admission. The patient had a gastric lavage, using a large bore orogastric tube, followed by the administration of activated charcoal. The patient had no other history of charcoal ingestion. We propos

The Esophageal Mucosa: Clues to Underlying Pathology.

Esophageal mucosal abnormalities, when accurately recognized, can provide clues to underlying pathology. In this article, we discuss strategies to enhance the detection and assessment of benign esophageal diseases during upper endoscopy by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). We provide a summary of skills required to perform high-quality EGD procedures from a technical standpoint, as well as a comprehensive description of the endoscopic appearance of the esophagus in health and in benign, organic diseases including eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), lymphocytic esophagitis and EoE variants, erosive

Pemphigus Vulgaris in the Mouth and Esophageal Mucosa.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a chronic autoimmune mucocutaneous disease. In most cases, the initial manifestation occurs in the mouth as multiple ulcerations preceded by blisters that rupture and later spread to other mucous membranes and the skin. Esophageal impairment is rare. We report a case of PV with esophageal involvement in a 53-year-old woman who sought medical care, complaining of diffuse painful lesions in the oral cavity for approximately 1 month, with no improvement with nystatin. Upper digestive endoscopy (UDE) was performed with findings of vesiculobullous lesions in the proximal

Lichen ruber mucosae with esophageal involvement.

The clinical course of a 50-year-old woman with oral lichen ruber planus (Irp) and prolonged dysphagia is described. The swallowing problems of this patient were related to an inflammatory lesion of the middle third of the esophagus, leading to stenosis. Distal to this area, the esophagus was covered with mucosa of the cardia type, as seen in endobrachyesophagus. Apart from reflux disease, the Irp may have accounted for the stenosis of the mid-esophagus. The mucosal lesions disappeared after administration of etretinate (Tigason). After endoscopic dilatation the patient was able to swallow nor

Mast cell density in cardio-esophageal mucosa.

Mast cells are related to certain gastrointestinal complaints. Mast cell density has not been studied in cardio-esophageal region to the best of our knowledge. In this study we wanted to obtain an estimate of mast cell density in this region and compare it with mast cell density in antrum. From April 2007 till March 2010, we chose children (<14 years old) who underwent upper endoscopy and from whom the taken biopsy was stated to be from lower third of esophagus, but in microscopic examination either cardio- esophageal mucosa or only cardiac mucosa was seen. Mast cells were counted by Giemsa st

Extracellular distribution of galectin-10 in the esophageal mucosa of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis.

Eosinophilic esophagitis is a T-cell-driven allergic condition hallmarked by eosinophil infiltration of the esophagus. Eosinophils exposed to proliferating T cells release galectin-10 and have T-cell suppressive function in vitro. The aims of this study were to evaluate if eosinophils co-localize with T cells and release galectin-10 in the esophagus of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis. Esophageal biopsies from 20 patients with eosinophilic esophagitis were stained for major basic protein, galectin-10, CD4, CD8, CD16, and CD81 and analyzed by immunofluorescence confocal microscopy before

Sloughing esophagitis is associated with chronic debilitation and medications that injure the esophageal mucosa.

Sloughing esophagitis is characterized by superficial necrotic squamous epithelium and endoscopic plaques or membranes. According to abstract reports SE affects older, debilitated patients on multiple medications. This study seeks to evaluate the clinical findings in patients with SE. Thirty-one patients with necrotic superficial squamous epithelium, with endoscopic white plaques or membranes, but without fungi, were compared with 34 patients having esophageal biopsies done for any purpose other than Barrett's surveillance. Sloughing esophagits patients were older than controls (56 vs 43.5 yea

Fragility of the esophageal mucosa: a pathognomonic endoscopic sign of primary eosinophilic esophagitis?

BACKGROUND: Primary eosinophilic esophagitis, a chronic inflammatory disorder of the esophagus, evokes recurrent dysphagia. Endoscopy is often unremarkable, and no consensus exists regarding management of resultant dysphagia. The response of a series of patients with primary eosinophilic esophagitis to dilation is reported together with a description of a possibly pathognomonic sign: fragile esophageal mucosa, for which the term "crêpe-paper" mucosa is introduced. METHODS: Five men underwent endoscopy because of dysphagia confirmed (clinically, endoscopically, and histologically) to be caused

Mucosa-penetrating liposomes for esophageal local drug delivery.

Local drug delivery to the esophagus is hampered by rapid transit time and poor permeability of the mucosa. If some strategies aimed to improve the residence time have been proposed, non-invasive approaches to increase the drug penetration in the mucosa have not been described so far. Herein, we designed mucosa-penetrating liposomes to favor the penetration and retention of curcumin (CURC) in the esophagus. A novel mucosa penetrating peptide (MPP), SLENKGP, was selected by Phage Display and conjugated to pegylated liposomes at different PEG and MPP's surface densities. Pegylation assured a lon

[Biomarkers for non-endoscopic examination of esophageal mucosa].

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a multifactorial disease; an individual´s genetic predisposition may contribute to the development of this disorder. Endoscopic methods and histological examination are commonly used to diagnose GERD and its complications such as Barretts esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). For BE screening in high-risk individuals as well as monitoring the development of BE dysplasia, esophageal mucosa samples could be taken using modern non-endoscopic procedures to minimize invasiveness of the procedure and improve patient adherence and compliance wit

Histology of esophageal mucosa from patients with achalasia.

When achalasia becomes far advanced and leads to esophageal resection, inflammation of the esophageal mucosa is almost universal. The histology of the esophageal mucosa in less advanced cases of achalasia has not been firmly established. We have studied endoscopic biopsies obtained during evaluation of patients with achalasia. Two to four endoscopic biopsies from the lower esophagus of 26 patients with manometrically verified achalasia were mounted on mesh, serially sectioned, stained, coded and interpreted by two independent observers using recognized criteria. The histological findings were

Histopathological Analysis of Esophageal Mucosa in Patients with Achalasia.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Achalasia is an esophageal motor disorder that leads to functional esophageal obstruction. Food stasis and bacterial fermentation can predispose an individual to esophageal mucosal inflammation, causing multifocal dysplasia and increasing the risk of developing esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. We aimed to evaluate esophageal mucosal alterations in achalasia patients and determine clinical factors associated with the histopathological findings. METHODS: From 2009 to 2013, we obtained endoscopic biopsies from the lower and middle esophagus of 22 patients with achalasia and 1

Dermatomyositis with exfoliation of esophageal mucosa: A case report.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a kind of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy characterized by chronic proximal skeletal muscle weakness and unique skin lesions. However, DM with exfoliation of esophageal mucosa is rare. A 36-year-old male patient complained of muscular soreness of extremities, dysphagia, and pharyngalgia was diagnosed with DM with exfoliation of esophageal mucosa. After treatment with glucocorticoid, immunosuppressant, acupuncture, and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), the above symptoms were disappeared. During the 3-year follow-up period, the results of routine physical examinat
