MicroRNAs in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is an aggressive malignancy requiring improved early diagnosis and prognostic assessment. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression, have emerged as promising biomarkers for ESCC. We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed for studies published up to 2025. While miRNA profiles in ESCC tissues show significant associations with lymphatic dissemination, tumor progression, and patient survival, clinical translation remains limited by issues of sensitivity, specificity, and standardization. This review summarizes

Esophageal adenosquamous carcinoma mimicking acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma.

Herein is described a unique case of esophageal cancer mimicking acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The patient succumbed to the disease within one month of diagnosis. Autopsy revealed a 10-cm esophageal tumor, characterized by prominent acantholysis-like areas composed of discohesive cancer cells, along with nested growth of SCC. These discohesive cancer cells focally exhibited pagetoid extension into adjacent esophageal epithelium, comprised ~60% of the esophageal tumor volume and had widely metastasized to the lungs, chest wall, liver, spleen, right adrenal gland, bones and lymph n

Unusual Metastases of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Colonic or peritoneal metastasis from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is extremely rare. We present the case of a 68-year-old man with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who received concurrent chemoradiation therapy. The follow-up whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT was performed 6 months after initial chemotherapy and showed new lesions of increased FDG activity in the colon as well as peritoneum. The final pathological diagnosis proved these metastases were from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after liver transplantation.

The occurrence of an oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma following liver transplantation is very infrequent. Such an event has been related to a history of alcohol-induced cirrhosis, as in other squamous cell tumours of the oropharynx. We report the case of a 64-year-old male patient diagnosed as having oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma six years after having had a liver transplant due to alcohol-induced cirrhosis. The tumour was treated surgically and consisted of an Ivor-Lewis oesophagectomy. The patient is disease-free 17 months after surgery. A review of the cases reported in the literat

Allelotype analysis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

In previous studies, we have shown that allelic loss on chromosome 17p, on which the p53 gene is located, is very frequent, and loss-of-function mutations of the p53 gene are closely associated with the tumorigenesis of esophageal cancer. In this study, we performed allelotype analysis to investigate whether other tumor suppressor genes are also involved in esophageal cancer. Using 55 polymorphic DNA markers covering every autosomal arm except 13p, 21p, and 22p, restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis was performed on 36 esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCs) and their adjacent n

Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Ductal Differentiation.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma with ductal differentiation (ESCC-DD) is exceedingly rare. This article presents a 61-year-old man with progressive dysphagia. Imaging studies and endoscopy were suggestive of malignancy. Pathological examination of the biopsy specimen diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma with focal biphasic glandular structures. The patient received chemotherapy with albumin-bound paclitaxel plus cisplatin, combined with immunotherapy using sintilimab injection, alongside supportive care to manage treatment-related adverse effects. One month later, his dysphagia had significant

Facial metastasis of Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a highly lethal malignancy with a low survival rate, often presenting at an advanced stage. Cutaneous metastasis from esophageal SCC is exceedingly rare, affecting less than 1 % of cases, and is associated with a poor prognosis. This review particularly focuses on facial metastasis and discusses the clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and management of cutaneous metastases. The variability in clinical presentation often leads to misdiagnosis, delaying appropriate treatment. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining are

Radiotherapy for Cervical Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Cervical esophageal carcinoma (CEC) is rare, accounting for 2-10% of esophageal cancers and is mostly squamous cell carcinoma. Because of the anatomical proximity of CEC to larynx, surgical treatment would involve pharyngo-laryngo-esophagectomy (PLE) with inherent high mortality and morbidity. Laryngeal preservation is an important consideration, and definitive chemoradiotherapy is the recommended treatment. Treatment strategy of CEC can be more akin to treatment for head and neck cancers than to thoracic esophageal cancers. Since the exact location, extent of primary and nodal metastasis vari

miR-133b Promotes Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of biological changes at the molecular level has important clinical implications for improving the survival rate of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Therefore, we plan to analyze and elucidate the expression of microRNA-133b (miR-133b), M2 pyruvate kinase (PKM2), and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in ESCC and their associated clinicopathological significance. METHODS: The 72 patients with ESCC were selected as the experimental study group. Normal adjacent tissues (NAT) were matched as the control group. In this study, in situ hybrid

Lymph Node Dissection for Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Lymph node metastasis is one of the most important prognostic factors in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. However, the optimal extent of lymph node dissection is still under debate. We specifically address several controversies regarding lymph node dissection, for example, recurrent laryngeal node lymphadenectomy, cervical lymphadenectomy, and thoracic duct resection, in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. We also describe new concepts in surgical anatomy of the upper mediastinum and technologies, for example, near-infrared image-guided lymphatic mapping and intraoperative neural monitoring

Prognostic variables in thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (TESCC) is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. The current American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM cancer staging system focusing on the effect of regional (N1) and nonregional lymph node (M1a and M1b) metastasis may need reappraisal. We investigated the role of the number of dissected and positive nodes in TESCC patients. METHODS: A total of 109 TESCC patients (97 men; mean age of 62.3 years) who underwent surgical resection were retrospectively analyzed. The current AJCC TNM system and other lymph node classifications

Etiology and chemoprevention of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the human esophagus has a multifactorial etiology involving several environmental and/or genetic factors. Current modalities of therapy for this disease offer poor survival and cure rates. Although a number of approaches could be undertaken to reduce the occurrence of esophageal SCC, including changes in lifestyle and improved nutrition, such approaches are not easily implemented. Chemoprevention offers a viable alternative that is likely to be effective against this disease. Clinical investigations in areas of high incidence of esophageal SCC have shown that p

[Postoperative therapy of recurrent esophageal squamous cell carcinoma].

Some 218 resected cases and 43 autopsied cases after resection during the last 13 years were analyzed with regard to the mode of recurrence and survival. Several factors were investigated with the following results. 1) Extensive clearance of upper mediastinal lymph nodes during radical surgery may reduce the incidence of tumor recurrence. It is preferable to remove the cervical lymph node, however, after positive metastasis to cervical lymph node. 2) Beginning in 1981, interstitial brachytherapy of 192Ir seed assemblies using afterloading techniques was administered to two patients with esopha

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: MRI evaluation of mediastinum.

Thirty-two patients with esophageal spinocellular (squamous cell) carcinoma were studied with superconductive magnet in order to evaluate local and extraluminal extent, as well as mediastinal lymph node spread of the disease. In the absence of adenopathy, the localized tumors were considered susceptible to surgical treatment. All patients were operated on within 21 days. The resectability criteria were correctly evaluated in 75% of cases; sensitivity and specificity were 86 and 67%, respectively. Unsatisfactory results were obtained in the evaluation of mediastinal adenopathies. We conclude th
