The supraseptal ethmoid sinus cell: A previously unreported ethmoid sinus variant.

To the author's knowledge, this is the first reported case in the literature of a supraseptal ethmoid sinus cell, located between the nasal septum and ethmoid roof. Such a cell, while rare, should be recognized and dissected carefully to prevent skull base injury and cerebrospinal fluid leak.

Osteosarcoma of the Ethmoid Sinus.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant bone tumor and it is very rare in head and neck region. If it arises in this area, most common localizations of this tumor are mandible and maxilla and ethmoid sinus is very rare site for this malignancy. A 43-year-old female admitted to our clinic with the complaint of pain in the right half of the face and headache persisting for 2 months. According to the clinical symptoms and imaging studies, sinonasal ossifying fibroma was suspected. For this reason, patient was operated endoscopically and histopathological examination revealed that osteoid matrix producin

Osteoblastoma of the ethmoid sinus.

An osteoblastoma is a benign bone tumor that most often occurs in the vertebral column and the long bones of the extremities. Paranasal sinus involvement is very rare. We report an osteoblastoma of the ethmoid sinus in a 13-year-old boy who presented with exophthalmos. CT demonstrated an expansile, lesion of the right ethmoid sinus, which caused the orbital contents to be compressed and deviated to the right. A mixture of ground glass opacity and dense bone was present. The less dense portions of the lesion showed intense enhancement on MRI; a signal void was present on all sequences in the de

Sinolith in the ethmoid sinus.

We report a case of sinolith in the left ethmoid sinus of a 61-year-old man. The patient complained of nasal obstruction. Computed tomography revealed a small, calcified mass associated with a nasal polyp in the left ethmoid sinus. The antrolith and polyp were removed via endoscopic sinus surgery. Histopathological analysis of the antrolith revealed it to be bone-like in formation. The antrolith was about 1 cm in diameter. Infrared spectroscopy revealed that the antrolith contained protein (45 per cent), calcium phosphate (43 per cent) and calcium carbonate (12 per cent).

Mucocele of the ethmoid sinus.

A 15-year-old female was evaluated for pain in the region of the right medial canthus and increasing exophthalmos. She had been diagnosed as having pseudo-tumor of the right orbit when she was 8 years old. The diagnosis was sustained until a second ophthalmologist requested a CT scan which demonstrated a mucocele of the right ethmoid sinus. Intranasal endoscopy revealed medial bulging of the right middle turbinate and meatus. Following a right external ethmoidectomy the eye returned to its normal position and pain disappeared. She has been asymptomatic for the past 4 years.

[Big osteoma of ethmoid sinus].

Sinus osteoma is a common nasal and sinus disease, while the clinical cases of osteoma with a diameter greater than 30 millimeter are rarely seen. This paper reports a case of a 39-years-old male patient discovered with one-year long swelling pain in the right eye. The patients' right eye was mildly prominent and he suffered from hypopsia and diplopia. After CT scanned, he have ethmoid osteoma been discovered, besides, the right media rectus compression and orbital apex compression and consequent pathologically were diagnosed. The solid tumor ranged widely from the anterior skull base to the s

Capillary haemangioma of the ethmoid sinus.

A middle-aged male presented with unilateral nasal blockage, reduced sense of smell and daily nosebleeds. He had a history of nasal polyps, and had undergone a left-sided polypectomy and ethmoidectomy some 10 years previously. A large polpypoid mass was visible within the right nasal cavity upon examination, with CT and MRI imaging confirming the presence of a large soft tissue abnormality with no intracranial extension. Following biopsy suggestive of angioma, the patient underwent embolisation of the mass prior to endoscopic resection. Subsequent pathology revealed the mass to be a capillary

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis from ethmoid sinus adenocarcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid is an aggressive tumor, with potential extension to surrounding structures. Leptomeningeal extension is a rarely reported entity. CASE REPORT: A carpenter, aged 55, developed multifocal cranial nerve-related symptoms 1 week after resection of adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid, evolving towards deteriorated general health status and death 10 weeks later. Brain MRI showed diffuse contrast enhancement of the cranial nerves, and repeated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination found increased protein concentration associated with decreased glucose concentrati

Osteogenic sarcoma of the ethmoid sinus.

A case of osteogenic sarcoma of the ethmoid sinus is reported in a 45 year old man. The tumour extended superiorly through the frontal sinus and involved the medial wall of the left orbit causing diplopia. Treatment comprised partial excision followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy with symptomatic improvement, although 13 months later the patient died from progressive local and metastatic disease. A possible relationship to previous radiation exposure is discussed.

Metastatic melanoma to the ethmoid sinus.

Malignant melanomas comprise approximately 1.5% of all malignant tumors and one fifth of these will involve the head and neck. The surgeon who operates in this region should be familiar with all aspects of this disease. The most common site of metastasis to the nose and paranasal sinuses is via the maxillary sinus. Often these metastases are of renal origin, with pulmonary metastases being the second most common source. The most frequent presenting symptoms are epistaxis, a nasal mass, or nasal obstruction. Review of the English literature to date has not revealed any reports of isolated metas

Giant Ethmoid Sinus Osteoma Protruding into the Maxillary Sinus.

Ethmoid sinus osteomas are rare, benign, encapsulated neoplasms of the paranasal region. They can lead to various complications such as sinusitis, orbital cellulitis, proptosis, and diplopia. The treatment protocol of these lesions changed remarkably as powered instrumentation of functional endoscopic sinus surgery evolved and otolaryngologists gained experience. Here, the authors report a 30-year-old female who was diagnosed with a giant right-sided ethmoid sinus osteoma and discuss diagnostic and treatment modalities of these lesions in consonance with the current literature.

Intraosseous Hemangioma of the Ethmoid Sinus.

Intraosseous hemangiomas, also referred to as bony hemangiomas, arising within the nasal cavity are exceedingly rare with only 2 cases arising in the ethmoid region. Despite their rarity, they are important to consider in a patient presenting with long-standing nasal congestion. While characteristic findings on computed tomography imaging may be observed, biopsy is diagnostic. En bloc resection using a transnasal endoscopic approach with or without preoperative embolization is the treatment of choice for intranasal intraosseous hemangiomas.

Ethmoid sinus osteoma: diagnosis and management.

BACKGROUND: Ethmoid sinus osteomas are uncommon, benign, osteogenic tumors. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe their usual clinical presentation and to discuss their surgical management. METHODS: The medical records of 25 patients treated for ethmoid osteoma between March 2001 and December 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: The average tumor size was 18.5 ± 14 mm. Only 3 patients were asymptomatic, 14 had a history of frontal sinusitis (complicated with orbital cellulitis in 4 cases), and 4 patients presented with diplopia. An endoscopic approach was performed

Orbital presentation of ethmoid sinus adenocarcinoma.

Ethmoid sinus adenocarcinoma with orbital invasion is distinctly uncommon. This case presented with epiphora, whereas proptosis and decreased ocular motility were later signs. Treatment was delayed for 4 months, while misdiagnoses like dacryocystitis and thyroid eye disease were entertained. Even an incisional biopsy was not sufficient for a conclusive diagnosis and adenomatous differentiation was only present in a small proportion of tissue available after an excisional attempt. The aggressive behaviour including this patient's death of metastatic disease, underlines the importance of conside

A Giant Osteoma of the Ethmoid Sinus.

Osteomas are slow-growing, benign bony tumors. Most are asymptomatic. Paranasal sinus osteoma in the pediatric population is rare; hence, there are few reports of symptomatic osteomas. The authors report the case of a giant ethmoid sinus osteoma in an 11-year-old girl who presented with diplopia and proptosis. Total excision and reconstruction of the medial orbital wall were performed via a coronal approach. The postoperative period was uneventful, the child's vision improved, and a good cosmetic result was obtained.

Cementifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus.

An interesting case of cementifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus is presented. This benign tumour, in this unusual site, tends to behave in an aggressive manner and radical surgery is necessary. Recurrence is frequent.
