[The phylogeny, ethology and nosology of yawning].

Charles Darwin would have said that yawning was a useless piece of physiology. If so, then how should the survival of this very stereotyped behavior among the poikilothermal and homoeothermic vertebrates, from the basic brained reptiles to human primates, whether in the air, on the land or in the sea be understand? This issue of the ethnological, neurophysiologic and neuropsychological literature depicts yawning as being associated with an alternation of "awake-sleep" rhythms, sexuality, and nutrition, where it appears as a reference behavior of the mechanisms stimulating the state of vigilanc

The ethology of the human-cat relationship.

Comparative behavioural observations were made in the home setting in order to analyze the ethology of the human-cat relationship. Factors postulated, and indeed, found to influence that relationship included marital status of the human (women living alone, with a partner or with a partner and children), housing conditions of the cat (indoor vs. outdoor access), number of cats kept (one vs. more than one), and to a very minor extent, pedigree of the cat (purebred vs. domestic mixture). Various measures of success at both the interactional, and the relationship level were examined and yielded t

Defensive burying in rodents: ethology, neurobiology and psychopharmacology.

Defensive burying refers to the typical rodent behavior of displacing bedding material with vigorous treading-like movements of their forepaws and shoveling movements of their heads directed towards a variety of noxious stimuli that pose a near and immediate threat, such as a wall-mounted electrified shock-prod. Since its introduction 25 years ago by Pinel and Treit [J. Comp. Physiol. Psychol. 92 (1978) 708], defensive (shock-prod) burying has been the focus of a considerable amount of research effort delineating the methodology/ethology, psychopharmacology and neurobiology of this robust and

[An ethological model of endogenous psychoses].

Our theory deals with the causality of the endogenous psychoses, considered as a shift of the systems of social behaviour that, in the natural history of our species, are supposed to have controlled the "Social homeostasis": territorial intolerance and dominance hierarchy. The subjective feeling of displacement beyond the boundaries of the group territory would trigger the paranoid syndrome, while the inner experience of an invasion of the own domain would lead to paranoia; hierarchical sudden ascent fits to the maniac syndromes, and the decay of dominance to depression. Intermingled emergence

Nocturnalism: an ethological theory of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a human behavioral variant with a 1% phenotypic population frequency. As the major "mental illness" affecting human beings, it has defied all previous attempts to explain, predict or prevent its devastating clinical manifestations. In addition to unidentified nongenetic determinants, schizophrenia has genetic determinants in the absence of known specific neuropathological or biochemical correlates found in other entities conceptualized as genetic diseases. The fitness of schizophrenics is 0.7 of nonschizophrenics, and a 1% phenotypic population frequency is difficult to explai

An ethological view of human adolescence.

In modern times the essential "normality" of adolescence has been acknowledged. With its pan-cultural and functional perspective, ethology is in a position to elaborate a description of normal human adolescence. Ethologists attempt to elucidate four interrelated aspects of a given behavior: its survival function, evolution, development, and elicitation by internal and external factors. The basic research strategy is two-fold: to identify biologically based, or evolved, behaviors (chiefly by controlling for the effects of experience and seeing if a core of evolved behavior remains); and to disc

Cognitive ethology of nest building in a shell-dwelling cichlid.

Across animal taxa, nest-building behavior is performed using a generalizable and flexible action sequence. In order to accomplish its goal (a stable nest), the brain appears to compare intermediate steps in the process to stored neural representations that are reminiscent of cognitive templates. Deviations from these templates drive progress, preferences, and corrections in the execution of this behavior. Here, we investigated the stereotypy vs. plasticity of nest building by the cichlid Lamprologus ocellatus, a fish species that manipulates abandoned snail shells to build shelters for breedi

An ethologically based view into human fear.

The quality of the defensive response to a threat depends on the elements that trigger the fear response. The current classification system of phobias does not account for this. Here, we analyze the fear-eliciting elements and discern the different types of fears that originate from them. We propose Pain, Disgust, Vasovagal response, Visual-vestibular and postural interactions, Movement and Speed, Distance and Size, Low and mid-level visual features, Smell, and Territory and social status. We subdivide phobias according to the fear-eliciting elements most frequently triggered by them and their

[Ethological methods exemplified by early childhood autism].

When humans are primarily impaired or overtaxed in their more elaborate abilities of coping with the social environment they seem to fall back on more primitive coping behaviours known from other mammals in severe conflict situations. This seems true for some behaviours in early childhood autism. Ethology has specialized in analyzing such non-verbal behaviour. Ethological motivation analysis, the study of context dependence and of the development of such behaviours in the individual patient should be exploited for their interpretation. Mere description of behaviour is not likely to contribute

Development of anuran locomotion: ethological and neurophysiological considerations.

There are dramatic quantitative and qualitative differences in the locomotor behavior of larval and juvenile frogs. Larvae (tadpoles) are primarily herbivourous and rely heavily on locomotion via undulations to acquire food and avoid predation. After metamorphosis, juvenile frogs adopt a carnivorous lifestyle and capture prey and avoid predators by remaining motionless in a place of concealment. When they must move, frogs locomote by means of ballistic hops or by more conventional walking. However, locomotion of both tadpoles and frogs can be considered of two fundamental functional types: (a)

Forensic ethology: An operational model to enhance forensic pathologists' knowledge in animal attacks.

Animal attacks are a significant and increasingly frequent forensic problem, yet forensic pathological research remains largely confined to the description of individual bite marks and wounds. This narrative review, conducted according to a structured and reproducible methodology informed by the principles of the PRISMA framework, aims to (i) synthesise species-specific lesion patterns and the underlying ethology of the domestic and wild animals most frequently implicated in human attacks, and (ii) propose a structured, probabilistic operational model to support forensic practitioners in the i

Ethological Action Maps: A Paradigm Shift for the Motor Cortex.

The map of the body in the motor cortex is one of the most iconic images in neuroscience. The map, however, is not perfect. It contains overlaps, reversals, and fractures. The complex pattern suggests that a body plan is not the only organizing principle. Recently a second organizing principle was discovered: an action map. The motor cortex appears to contain functional zones, each of which emphasizes an ethologically relevant category of behavior. Some of these complex actions can be evoked by cortical stimulation. Although the findings were initially controversial, interest in the ethologica

Ethological, psychological and legal aspects of animal sexual abuse.

This report presents an analysis of sexual abuse of five three-month old calves that died as a result of injury. A subsequent police investigation concluded that the animals had been sexually abused by an individual affected with zoophilia. The calves received injuries in the anogenital region resulting in fatal internal bleeding. The wounds appeared to have been caused by inserting and manipulating an unknown object into the vaginas of the animals. Post-mortem examination showed rupture of both the rectum and vagina in each calf with massive haemorrhage into the abdominal and thoracic cavitie

Ethological remarks on mannerisms. Conceptualisation and proposal for a definition. off.

Mannerisms are symptoms of various psychiatric disorders. The term has not been defined thoroughly and is often confused with stereotypies or the more generally used term 'bizarreness'. From an ethological perspective, mannerisms may be regarded as pathologically altered forms of ritualised behaviour that serve a communicative purpose. Mannerisms are maladaptive behaviours since they lead to withdrawal of and rejection by the socially interacting partner, or even induce aggressive behaviour due to the pathologically exaggerated and overdrawn appearance. The behaviour-physiology interactions of

Depth psychological and cultural-ethological aspects in connection with alcoholism.

Various hypotheses as to the definition, cause and consequence of alcoholism have been put forward over the years, but they have only resulted in general confusion. The files of approximately 200 patients from private and State hospitals and mental institutions were therefore examined in an attempt to view the problem without bias. Alcoholics were defined as belonging to one of the following groups : those for whom drink is a primary pleasure, those for whom it is an escape from problems, and a smaller third group with some organic biochemical factor, in which alcohol acts as a release mechani

Towards an ethological animal model of depression? A study on horses.

BACKGROUND: Recent reviews question current animal models of depression and emphasise the need for ethological models of mood disorders based on animals living under natural conditions. Domestic horses encounter chronic stress, including potential stress at work, which can induce behavioural disorders (e.g. "apathy"). Our pioneering study evaluated the potential of domestic horses in their usual environment to become an ethological model of depression by testing this models' face validity (i.e. behavioural similarity with descriptions of human depressive states). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING

Emphasis is brought to similarities between informations collected from the study and treatment of patients suffering from nail biting and trichotillomania, by behavioural treatment and the concept according to which such troubles are "tics", learned responses which will become non adapted, present in a given situation, reinforced by time and progressively more resistant to extinction on the one hand, and ethological concepts which consider those behaviours as displacement of activity such as "grooming" in primates, ritual activities, free from nutritions activities, triggered by some attitude

The aetiology of childhood autism: a criticism of the Tinbergen's ethological theory.

Kanner's descriptions of the children showing the abnormal behaviour pattern he observed and named "early infantile autism" are summarized. E.A. and N. Tinbergen's ethological theory of the aetiology of this syndrome is outlined and criticized. The major problem in evaluating this theory, apart from the absence of any evidence in its favour, is the lack of precision with which the Tinbergens use the terms "autism" and "Kanner's syndrome".

Quantitative ethology of schistosome miracidia characterizes a conserved snail peptide that inhibits penetration.

Over 700 million people are at risk of contracting schistosomiasis due to regular exposure to freshwater sources where infected snails, the obligate intermediate hosts of schistosomes, are endemic. Although mass drug administration of praziquantel effectively controls the disease in most regions, achieving elimination will require reducing populations of infected snails that shed the human-infective larval stage. Considerable effort has focused on parasite development and immunological responses after snail penetration, but comparatively little is known about the molecular and behavioral host
