The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) follows standard scientific methods to develop up-to-date toxicity factors for chemicals emitted in the state of Texas. An inhalation unit risk factor (URF) was developed for ethylene dibromide (EDB, CAS 106-93-4) based on an increased incidence of nasal cavity adenocarcinomas observed in female rats in a 2-year inhalation cancer bioassay conducted by the National Toxicology Program (NTP). Two carcinogens, ethylene dibromide and benzene, were used to induce delayed (germinal mosaic) sex-linked recessive lethal mutations in spermatozoa and spermatids of adult Drosophila males. Significant numbers of delayed mutations (in F3) were scored in absence of conventional (in F2) mutations. Ethylene dibromide is a ground water pollutant principally as a result of its use as a soil pesticide and secondarily from spills or leaks of leaded gasoline in which it is an additive. The compound has been found in over 1900 wells in 4 countries: Japan, Israel, Australia, and the United States (10 states), typically at concentrations of 0.04-4 micrograms/L. The sorption of carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dibromide, and trichloroethylene in two silty clay loam soils and aluminium (Al(3+)) or calcium (Ca(2+)) saturated montmorillonite clay was studied. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In view of high incidence and mortality due to ethylene dibromide poisoning, a prospective study was planned to assess demographic, toxicological, clinical profile and outcome.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospectively collected data of sixty four patients with ethylene dibromide poisoning were reviewed. All the patients were from Gwalior and neighbouring districts.

Ethylene-di-bromide is a popular fumigant. Delayed long-term effects of this chemical include carcinogenicity and genotoxicity in animals. Only a few cases of acute ethylene-di-bromide toxicity have been reported and all of them have resulted in a fatal outcome. We report the first case of ethylene-di-bromide poisoning presenting with acute renal failure and toxic hepatitis that was managed successfully.

A gas chromatographic (GC) procedure for determining fumigants in grains was developed. Fumigants were leached from grain samples with the official AOAC method using acetone-water (5 + 1). They were then partitioned from the leachate with isooctane, yielding a dry, stable extract that was analyzed by GC. Fortified sample recoveries ranged from 90 to 100%.
