OBJECTIVE: To report a case of probable etodolac-induced agranulocytosis.
CASE SUMMARY: A 72-year-old woman who had been taking etodolac 300 mg bid for approximately six weeks presented to the emergency department with symptoms of urosepsis. She was found to be profoundly granulocytopenic. Etodolac was discontinued and broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotic therapy was administered for the next 17 days. Etodolac is a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Published and unpublished data on etodolac in pain management are reviewed to assess the analgesic effectiveness of this drug. Data are presented from four representative studies that showed the analgesic activity of etodolac in postsurgical pain models. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the effect of etodolac on a dog model of osteoarthritic temporomandibular joints (TMJ).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten adult beagle dogs underwent surgery to induce osteoarthritis in the right TMJ, and were then randomly divided into two groups each of 5 dogs. From 2 to 6 weeks after surgery, the dogs in group 1 (control group) were given an empty gelatin capsule daily, and the dogs in group 2 (study group) were given 15 mg/kg of etodolac daily. The analgesic efficacy of etodolac for 161 patients reporting moderate to severe pain after oral surgery was evaluated. BACKGROUND: Etodolac is a selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor, with evidence of efficacy in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Its analgesic efficacy in postoperative pain has not been clearly established. There are no systematic reviews on Etodolac's use in this condition.

Short and longterm safety and efficacy of etodolac in a wide range of dosages in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are summarized. Data from 8 studies, one longterm (1 year) and 7 short term (< 10 weeks) were analyzed.
