This is the first report about the modifying antibiotic activity of Eugenia uniflora L. and Eugenia jambolanum L. In this study the ethanol extract of E. uniflora and E. jambolanum was tested for their antimicrobial activity against strains of Escherichia coli. The growth of the two strains of E. coli bacteria tested was not inhibited in a clinically relevant form by the extract. The minimal inhibitory concentration was >or=1,024 microg/mL for both strains of E. coli assayed. Synergism between this extract and gentamicin was demonstrated. In the same extract synergism was observed between chlo

Antifungal activities of Eugenia umbelliflora Berg. (Myrtaceae) were tested in vitro against a panel of standard and clinical isolates of human fungal pathogens (dermatophytes and opportunistic saprobes). Methanol extracts of leaves and fruits of E. umbelliflora were separately prepared and partitioned, to yield dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and aqueous fractions (Aq). Three compounds (1-3) were obtained from the DCM extract using chromatographic procedures. Antifungal assays were performed using agar dilution techniques. Both extracts (fruits and leaves), their DCM and EtOAc fr

Eugenia brasiliensis Lam., a plant from the south of Brazil, is used in the popular medicine for rheumatism treatment. This study reports that topical application of hydroalcoholic extract, fractions and isolated compounds from E. brasiliensis caused an inhibition of ear oedema in response to topical application of croton oil on the mouse ear. For oedema inhibition, the estimated ID50 values (dose reducing the inflammatory response by 50% relative to the control value) for hydroalcoholic extract and fractions (hexane, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane) were 0.17, 0.29, 0.13 and 0.14 mg/ear, re

The essential oil from the hydrodistillation of Eugenia dysenterica leaves consisted mainly of beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene as the major sesquiterpene, while limonene and alpha-thujene were the major monoterpene hydrocarbons. The main oxygenated mono and sesquiterpene constituents were alpha-terpineol and beta-caryophyllene oxide, respectively. The oil was investigated against eight strains of Candida albicans, 35 strains of Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans, and two C. neoformans var. gattii isolated from HIV-infected individuals with candidosis or cryptococcal meningitis using

The fruit of Indian Eugenia jambolana have been shown to have therapeutic properties, but because the therapeutic potential of a plant is related to the geographic region in which the plant was grown and to the part of the plant used, we investigated Brazilian Eugenia jambolana fruit using the same preparation and experimental methods as have been used in India. The well-established metabolic cage model was used to evaluate the physiological and metabolic parameters associated with streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats (n=10) which had been administered, by gavage, 50 mg per day of lyophilis

This work evaluated the antiproliferative potential of Eugenia brasiliensis leaf extracts against the HeLa cervical cancer cell line. The extracts were prepared by maceration using hexane (EBH), dichloromethane (EBD), and ethyl acetate (EBAE), and they were evaluated for their antiproliferative potential through a 3-4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide (MTT) assay in the cervical cancer cell culture (HeLa cell line) and a non-cancer cell line (NIH-3T3). EBH, EBD, and EBAE were cytotoxic in HeLa cells, with 50% inhibition concentration (IC50) = 97.59, 31.03, and 57.67 µg/mL,

Seeds of Eugenia jambolana Lam. (Myrtaceae) are used by many tribes in India to treat diarrhea and dysentery. The crude extracts of seeds of this plant demonstrated zones of inhibition in the range of 14- 21 mm against the isolated beta-lactamase-producing drug-resistant bacteria. The methanol extract showed promising antibacterial activity which was subjected to fractionation. The effective fraction (F2) showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 31.75 to 62.5 microg/mL. Phytochemical analysis and thin layer chromatography of the most promising fraction showed the presence o

BACKGROUND: Clove oil, primarily extracted from the flower buds of the clove plant, is widely used in food, cosmetics, and traditional medicine due to its rich composition of phenolic acids and flavonoids, with eugenol being a major component. This essential oil exhibits numerous biological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. In the context of drone semen cryopreservation, challenges such as ice crystal formation, and oxidative stress hinder fertility outcomes. To address these issues, the study explores the effects of commercial clove oil prepara

This work explores inflorescence development patterns in Eugenia (Myrtaceae), one of the largest genera of woody plants with over 1200 species. The central hypothesis is that all variation in inflorescence arrangements in Eugenia is homologous. This is addressed as specific aims: (i) to identify the main inflorescence developmental patterns, (ii) to test the homology of inflorescence architectures using a time-calibrated phylogeny, and (iii) to assess and update traditional terminology. Taxonomically representative samples of Eugenia inflorescences were analysed to provide an evolutionary and
