Sarcoptic mange in wild ungulates in the European Alps - A systematic review.

Sarcoptic mange, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, is a disease that affects many species of mammals, including several wild ungulate species in the region of the European Alps, especially the Alpine chamois and the Alpine ibex, which act as parasite reservoirs. Here records of mange in alpine wild ungulates and its spread over time across the eastern parts of the European Alps are reviewed. First cases were recorded from Austria in 1824, and epizootic outbreaks have been described since then from the mountainous regions of Austria (mostly Tyrol, Carinthia, and Styria), Germany (Bavaria), Italy (Ud

Comparison of whole genomes of tick-borne encephalitis virus from mountainous alpine regions and regions with a lower altitude.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has been a notifiable disease in Germany since 2001. Its causative agent, the TBE virus (TBEV), is the most important arbovirus in Europe and Northern Asia. The illness, caused by the European Subtype usually displays flu-like symptoms, but can result in sequelae and, in 2 % of all cases, in death. Over the last few decades, the virus has spread into new habitats, such as higher altitudes in the Alpine region. For this study, it was hypothesized that the environmental challenges that the virus might be exposed to at such altitudes could lead to the selection of vi

Ups and downs of infections with the broad fish tapeworm Dibothriocephalus latus in Europe from 1900 to 2020: Part I.

The broad fish tapeworm, Dibothriocephalus latus (Diphyllobothriidea), is the most frequent causative agent of diphyllobothriosis, a fish-borne zoonosis, in Europe. Diphyllobothriosis is characterized by the transmission of D. latus larvae to humans via the consumption of raw, marinated, smoked or inadequately cooked fish products. The most important European foci of diphyllobothriosis have been Fennoscandia, the Baltic region, the Alpine lakes region, the Danube River region, and several endemic regions in Russia. This review provides basic data on the biology, life cycle, host specificity, m

Fasciola hepatica in alpine dairy farming: prevalence trends, risk factors and associations with Salmonella Dublin seropositivity.

Fasciola hepatica impairs animal health and productivity in ruminants and has been associated with Salmonella Dublin infection, a zoonotic pathogen in cattle that causes diarrhea, abortions, and pneumonia. This work reassessed F. hepatica seroprevalence in Tyrolean dairy herds and investigated associations with alpine pasturing, the breed, S. Dublin occurrence and milk performance. In late autumn/early winter 2023, bulk tank milk samples from 3645 farms were tested using a commercial ELISA test (IDEXX Fasciolosis Verification Test, Montpellier, France). Accelerated Red Blood Cell Turnover Following Extreme Mountain Ultramarathon?

INTRODUCTION: Mountain ultramarathon (MUM) induces extreme physiological stress for the human body. For instance, a decrease in total hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) due to severe hemolysis is historically suspected. Nevertheless, hematological changes following a 330-km MUM have to date never been investigated. METHODS: Blood volumes were determined before (pre-) and after (post-) a 330-km race completed by 13 participants, through the automated carbon monoxide (CO)-rebreathing method. Native viscosity and normalized blood viscosity were determined using a cone/plate viscometer at five different sp

Biogeography of Stress: Graded and Threshold Phenological Responses in European Beech-Dominated Forests Under Disruptive Heatwaves.

Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of summer heatwaves, posing a major threat to temperate forests. European beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests are particularly sensitive to thermal extremes. Given their wide distribution, responses to heatwaves are not uniform, and it remains unclear how sensitivity varies at the continental scale. This study aims to quantify how summer disruptive heatwaves (dHWs) reshape phenological dynamics in European beech-dominated forests (BDFs) over 2003-2023 across four major biogeographical regions: Alpine, Atlantic, Continental and Mediterranean.

Riders in the sky (islands): using a mega-phylogenetic approach to understand plant species distribution and coexistence at the altitudinal limits of angiosperm plant life.

AIM: Plants occurring on high-alpine summits are generally expected to persist due to adaptations to extreme selective forces caused by the harshest climates where angiosperm life is known to thrive. We assessed the relative effects of this strong environmental filter and of other historical and stochastic factors driving plant community structure in very high-alpine conditions (up to 4,000m). LOCATION: European Alps, Écrins National Park, France. METHODS: Using species occurrence data collected from floristic surveys on 15 summits (2,791 m - 4,102 m a.s.l.) throughout the Écrins range, alon

Concordant genetic breaks, identified by combining clustering and tessellation methods, in two co-distributed alpine plant species.

Natural genetic breaks may indicate limitations to gene flow or the presence of contact zones of previously isolated populations. Molecular evidence suggests that genetic breaks have aggregated in distinct geographical areas. We propose a new application of well-established statistical methods for analysing multilocus genetic data to identify intraspecific genetic breaks. The methodological approach combines Bayesian clustering with a spatially explicit maximum-difference algorithm to visualize and quantify breaks between clusters. We used amplified fragment length polymorphism data of two co-

Ethnoveterinary contemporary knowledge of farmers in pre-alpine and alpine regions of the Swiss cantons of Bern and Lucerne compared to ancient and recent literature - Is there a tradition?

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The term "traditional" is well established in European (human) medicine and even appears in recent European regulations on herbal medicinal products connected to a simplified registration. In contrast, a scientific discussion of a Traditional European Veterinary Herbal Medicine is still lacking in spite of a rising interest, in herbal medicine for animals in particular of veterinarians. There is only limited systematic ethnoveterinary research in Europe, with exception of the Mediterranean region, Switzerland and Austria. We conducted a survey on the ethnoveteri

Multi-locus microsatellite analysis supports the hypothesis of an autochthonous focus of Echinococcus multilocularis in northern Italy.

Echinococcus multilocularis is characterised by a wide geographical distribution, encompassing three continents (North America, Asia and Europe) yet very low genetic variability is documented. Recently, this parasite has been detected in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) circulating in an Alpine region of Italy, close to Austria. This finding raised the question as to whether an autochthonous cycle exists in Italy or whether the infected foxes originated from the neighbouring regions of Austria. Studies have shown that multi-locus microsatellite analysis can identify genomic regions carrying mutations

Is the alpine divide becoming more permeable to biological invasions? - Insights on the invasion and establishment of the Walnut Husk Fly, Rhagoletis completa (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Switzerland.

The Walnut Husk Fly, Rhagoletis completa Cresson (Diptera: Tephritidae), is native to North America (Midwestern US and north-eastern Mexico) and has invaded several European countries in the past decades by likely crossing the alpine divide separating most parts of Switzerland from Italy. Here, we determined its current distribution in Switzerland by sampling walnuts (Juglans regia L.) in ecologically and climatically distinct regions along potential invasion corridors. R. completa was found to be firmly established in most low altitude areas of Switzerland where walnuts thrive, but notably no

European emissions of HFC-365mfc, a chlorine-free substitute for the foam blowing agents HCFC-141b and CFC-11.

HFC-365mfc (1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane) is an industrial chemical used for polyurethane foam blowing. From early 2003, HFC-365mfc has been commercially produced as a substitute for HCFC-141b, whose use in Europe has been banned since January 2004. We describe the first detection of HFC-365mfc in the atmosphere and report on a 2 year long record at the high Alpine station of Jungfraujoch (Switzerland) and the Atlantic coast station of Mace Head (Ireland). The measurements at Jungfraujoch are used to estimate the central European emissions of HFC-365mfc, HCFC-141b, and CFC-11. For HFC-365mfc, w

Observations of long-lived anthropogenic halocarbons at the high-Alpine site of Jungfraujoch (Switzerland) for assessment of trends and European sources.

Anthropogenic halocarbons, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), bromocarbons (halons) and long-lived chlorinated solvents have been measured continuously at the high-Alpine site of Jungfraujoch (Switzerland) since January 2000. Chloro- and bromo-containing halocarbons are responsible for the stratospheric ozone depletion and will be globally banned from usage within the next years. With the exception of the stable CFC-12 (CF2 Cl2), all major CFCs and chlorinated solvents show a negative trend in recent years in their background concen

Striking Diversification of Exudate Profiles in Selected Primula Lineages.

In continuation of previous studies on glandular exudates of Primula, we analyzed eleven so far unstudied species and several populations for exudate composition. Unsubstituted flavone and unusually substituted flavones, normally predominant in Primula exudates, were not detected in all of the analyzed samples. Instead, some species exhibited regular substituted flavonoids, and in some cases, no flavonoids could be detected at all. The detection of a diterpene (1) in P. minima exudates is new to Primula. On basis of MS and NMR, 1 was structurally characterized as ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid. Co

Global Change and Interspecific Competition Impacts on the Genetic Connectivity of Mountain Hare (Lepus timidus) and European Hare (Lepus europaeus) Populations in the French Alps.

In mountain ecosystems, the persistence of species increasingly depends on the maintenance of functional connectivity under the dual pressures of climate and land-use change. "Sky island" species such as the mountain hare (Lepus timidus) are particularly vulnerable, being restricted to high-altitude cold-climate habitats. Meanwhile, generalist and expanding species like the European hare (L. europaeus) may further threaten their persistence through interspecific competition. Despite growing concern about biodiversity in mountain regions, fine-scale assessments of landscape connectivity and its

Whole genome SNP analysis of bovine B. anthracis strains from Switzerland reflects strict regional separation of Simmental and Swiss Brown breeds in the past.

Bacillus anthracis is an evolutionarily young species that presents an extremely low genetic diversity due to its slow mode of propagation, determined by short replication phases and long sporulation periods. In our ongoing efforts to elucidate phylogenetic relationships between European B. anthracis isolates, the genomes of five strains from Switzerland belonging to lineages B.Br.CNEVA and A.Br.Aust94 were sequenced. Comparative analysis with additional, available genomes from both lineages, were used to reconstruct the substructure of these populations. Genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorp
