Ethical perspectives in caring for people living with addictions: The European experience.

European policy and practice in caring for people living with addictions is based on defined values (human rights, medical ethics) and on research evidence for the effects and impact of interventions. The focus of the paper is on risk management approaches to reduce the negative consequences of continued illicit drug use, being the ethically most debatable issue. The legal and policy positions are set by the European Council and Commission, and their translation into practice is documented centrally in the European Monitoring Centre on Drugs and Drug Addiction, showing the general trends as we

A European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC) survey of European critical care management of young people.

UNLABELLED: Adolescents have specific healthcare needs distinct from adults or younger children secondary to anatomical, physiological and socio-behavioural differences. Healthcare providers have been slow to address this, leading the UK Department of Health (2011) to publish 'You're Welcome' quality criteria for services for young people. (In the UK, the term young people is preferred to adolescent.) These generic criteria poorly fit the critical care environment, omitting key issues whilst insisting upon irrelevant standards. But as young people are infrequent patients for any individual uni

Over 500 000 people on kidney replacement therapy in the European Union.

The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is driven by mortality and the necessity of kidney replacement therapy (KRT). CKD causes one death every 20 seconds globally and is among the fastest growing causes of death. It is forecast to become the fifth most common global cause of death and the third in western Europe by 2050. It is estimated that 511 549 European Union (EU) inhabitants depend on KRT, with nearly two-thirds (≈310 000) treated by dialysis, and the remainder being kidney transplant recipients (≈200 000). KRT is provided by every EU country. France (96 317), Germany (77 900), Spai

COVID-19 health and social care access for autistic people: European policy review.

BACKGROUND: The global COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on European health and social care systems, with demands on testing, hospital and intensive care capacity exceeding available resources in many regions. This has led to concerns that some vulnerable groups, including autistic people, may be excluded from services. METHODS: We reviewed policies from 15 European member states, published in March-July 2020, pertaining to (1) access to COVID-19 tests; (2) provisions for treatment, hospitalisation and intensive care units (ICUs); and (3) changes to standard health and social

Healthy ageing and home: the perspectives of very old people in five European countries.

This paper reports on in-depth research, using a grounded theory approach, to examine the ways in which very old people perceive healthy ageing in the context of living alone at home within urban settings in five European countries. This qualitative study was part of a cross-national project entitled ENABLE-AGE which examined the relationship between home and healthy ageing. Interviews explored the notion of healthy ageing, the meaning and importance of home, conceptualisations of independence and autonomy and links between healthy ageing and home. Data analysis identified five ways in which o

Lay-people's knowledge about toxicology and its principles in eight European countries.

The procedures of risk assessment related to substances consumed or used by consumers (e.g., food additives, cleaning products) are highly complex and there exists some controversy between experts in regards to the uncertainty linked to it. This contributes to the well documented divergence in experts and lay-people's judgments, particularly for synthetic or man-made chemicals. By investigating lay-people's knowledge gaps and misconceptions related to toxicology, we hope to contribute to facilitating the communication between experts and the lay public. For this, a large-scale survey measuring

[Prevalence of calcium deficiency in the hair in people at different age and sex living in the European North.].

Calcium is one of the most important elements in the human body, while its deficiency is common among residents throughout the world. The reasons for the deficiency are the lack of calcium in food and water, which is especially important for the North territories belonging to the biogeochemical provinces. The surface waters of the Republic of Karelia are ultra-fresh and low-mineralized. The purpose of this study was to determine the calcium level in the hair of the European North (Republic of Karelia) residents with an assessment of the deficiency prevalence in different sex and age groups. How do people with COPD walk? A European study on digitally measured real-world gait.

BACKGROUND: The amount of walking that people with COPD do is reduced. However, data on their manner of walking (i.e. gait) are still lacking. We characterised real-world gait in COPD by assessing levels and distributions of gait parameters, and comparing them across COPD severity and with healthy peers. METHODS: 549 people with COPD from seven European sites and 19 healthy older adults wore single wearable devices (either Axivity AX6 or DynaPort MoveMonitor MM+) continuously for 1 week, from which we identified walking bouts, calculated 15 digital mobility outcomes (DMOs) aggregated at the w

Social support, socio-economic status, health and abuse among older people in seven European countries.

BACKGROUND: Social support has a strong impact on individuals, not least on older individuals with health problems. A lack of support network and poor family or social relations may be crucial in later life, and represent risk factors for elder abuse. This study focused on the associations between social support, demographics/socio-economics, health variables and elder mistreatment. METHODS: The cross-sectional data was collected by means of interviews or interviews/self-response during January-July 2009, among a sample of 4,467 not demented individuals aged 60-84 years living in seven Europe
