Methylisothiazolinone outbreak in the European Union.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review was to examine the current outbreak of cases of contact allergy to methylisothiazolinone in Europe, a phenomenon that has also been observed worldwide, despite initial legislative control of the introduction of methylisothiazolinone into the market. RECENT FINDINGS: Reported allergic contact reactions are primarily eczematous, most commonly in women over 40 from cosmetic use, but there are reports of noneczematous eruptions such as lichen planus-like or lymphomatoid reactions. Methylisothiazolinone in cosmetic, personal care, for example, wet wipe, an

[Immunization schedule in the European Union].

All nations that are part of the European Union share the same aim for the control and eradication of vaccine-preventable diseases. However, there are differences in child immunization strategies and schedules between nations, depending upon health care systems, immunization habits and epidemiology of infectious diseases. All nations immunize children against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, rubella and mumps. Immunization against pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae, hepatitis B and tuberculosis are not systematically applied.

Abortion by telemedicine in the European Union.

This paper analyses an important set of legal issues raised by the telemedical provision of abortion pills. Focusing on the case of European Union (EU) law, it suggests that a properly accredited doctor seeking to treat a patient with abortion pills is entitled, in principle, to rely on EU rules of free movement to protect their access to patients in other member states, and women facing unwanted pregnancies likewise have legal rights to access the services thus offered. EU countries seeking to claim an exception to those rules on the basis of public health or the protection of a fundamental p

Household scenarios for the European Union.

"This article reports on three Household Scenarios for the countries of the European Union.... These scenarios predict the numbers of persons living alone, living with a partner, living as a child at the parental home and living in another household position, as well as the institutional population. The period covered is 1995-2025. In all three scenarios, the number of persons living alone will grow.... The total number of households increases in all scenarios, whereas the average household size will decline in all scenarios."

European Union research strategies on vaccines.

Vaccination presents one of the most cost-effective approaches to the majority of infectious diseases showing strong reductions in public health costs. Vaccination led to the eradication of smallpox, and we are moving now close to eradicating polio. Vaccines might also serve as therapeutic agents against diseases such as herpes and novel molecular biology techniques could provide possibilities for the development of new vaccines against cancer. However, despite the tremendous progress in preventing infectious diseases by vaccination, these diseases still account for 17 million of the 50 millio

Paediatric Regulation in the European Union: an overview.

Paediatric Investigation Plans (PIPs) are a critical component of the EU's regulatory strategy to ensure that medicines are appropriately studied, developed and authorised for use in children. The legislative scheme for PIPs was established under Regulation (EC) no. 1901/2006, also known as 'Paediatric Regulation'. Paediatric Regulation mandates that all new marketing authorisation applications and line extensions must include data from PIPs unless waivers or deferrals have been granted. This literature review's objective is to explore the 'PIPs, waivers and deferrals' regulatory framework for

Alcohol Use and Cancer in the European Union.

BACKGROUND: Cancers constitute a major non-communicable disease category globally and in the European Union (EU). SUMMARY: Alcohol use has been established as a major cause of cancer in humans. Principal cancer agencies agree that the following cancer sites are causally impacted by alcohol: lip and oral cavity, pharynx (excluding nasopharynx), oesophagus, colon and rectum, liver, (female) breast, and larynx. For all of these cancer sites, there is a dose-response relationship with no apparent threshold: the higher the average level of consumption, the higher the risk of cancer incidence. In t

Syphilis in Slovenia--on the threshold of the European Union.

The epidemiological situation of early syphilis (ES) in Slovenia is the subject matter of this report. After almost 25 years of decrease in Slovenia, ES is increasing again. The incidence of ES increased from 0.10 per 100,000 inhabitants in 1992 and 1993 to 1.82 in 1994 and 1.90 in 1995. In the years 1996-1998 there was a slight decrease at 1.25-1.45. The higher incidence of infections with ES is presumably the consequence of changed social conditions in the states of the former Eastern bloc and Yugoslavia, and of changing living conditions, and illegal prostitution in Slovenia. AIDS and HIV i

Measles among migrants in the European Union and the European Economic Area.

AIMS: Progress towards meeting the goal of measles elimination in the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) by 2015 is being obstructed, as some children are either not immunized on time or never immunized. One group thought to be at increased risk of measles is migrants; however, the extent to which this is the case is poorly understood, due to a lack of data. This paper addresses this evidence gap by providing an overview of the burden of measles in migrant populations in the EU/EEA. METHODS: Data were collected through a comprehensive literature review, a country survey of EU/EEA member

Epidemiology of human West Nile virus infections in the European Union and European Union enlargement countries, 2010 to 2018.

BackgroundWest Nile virus (WNV) circulates in an enzootic cycle involving mosquitoes and birds; humans are accidental hosts.AimWe analysed human WNV infections reported between 2010 and 2018 to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to better understand WNV epidemiology.MethodsWe describe probable and confirmed autochthonous human cases of WNV infection reported by European Union (EU) and EU enlargement countries. Cases with unknown clinical manifestation or with unknown place of infection at NUTS 3 or GAUL 1 level were excluded from analysis.ResultsFrom southern, eastern and w

Prevention of human rabies: a challenge for the European Union and the European Economic Area.

Rabies is enzootic in over one hundred countries worldwide. In the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA), the vast majority of human rabies cases are travellers bitten by dogs in rabies-enzootic countries, mostly in Asia and Africa. Thus, EU/EEA travellers visiting rabies enzootic countries should be aware of the risk of being infected with the rabies virus when having physical contact with mammals. They should consider pre-exposure vaccination following criteria recommended by the World Health Organization and if unvaccinated, immediately seek medical attention in case of bites or sc
