Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) are an electrical manifestation of the brain response to an auditory stimulus. Mid-latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEPs) and the coherent frequency of the AEP are the most promising for monitoring depth of anaesthesia. MLAEPs show graded changes with increasing anaesthetic concentration over the clinical concentration range. The latencies of Pa and Nb lengthen and their amplitudes reduce. These changes in features of waveform are similar with both inhaled and intravenous anaesthetics. Changes in latency of Pa and Nb waves are highly correlated to a trans

Small potentials, evoked by repetitive visual, auditory or somatosensory stimulation in the afferent pathways of the cord, brainstem or cortex, and detected by averaging signals from distant electrodes on the skin of the neck or scalp, can be used to investigate sensory loss or to detect clinically "silent" lesions in multiple sclerosis and other diseases.

The term visually evoked potential (VEP) refers to electrical potentials recorded from scalp overlying visual cortex that have been extracted from the electroencephalogram by signal averaging. Usually the recording electrode is placed on the midline of the occipital scalp at the back of the head. VEPs are used to quantify the functional integrity of the optic nerves, pathways to the visual cortex of the brain, and occipital cortex. Any abnormality that affects the visual pathways or visual cortex in the brain can affect the VEP. Examples include slowing neuronal transmission, such as produced

Pattern reversal evoked potentials (PVEPs) are a noninvasive procedure that are useful for detecting lesions of the visual pathways. This article reviews anatomy of the visual pathway and the testing protocols for fullfield and hemifield PVEP and flash (goggle) visual evoked potentials (FVEP). Criteria for evaluation of normal and abnormal responses and clinical correlates are discussed. We conclude with a brief discussion of recording visual evoked potentials (VEPs) from subdural or depth electrodes to localize primary visual cortex in patients, with a parieto-occipital seizure focus, who are

Loud clicks, short tone bursts, head taps and short duration transmastoid currents are all capable of activating vestibular receptors and evoking reflex changes in tonic electromyogram activity within the sternocleidomastoid muscles. Because they derive from averaged electromyograms, the responses are termed 'vestibular evoked myogenic potentials'. The earliest response ipsilateral to a loud click, p13n23, is dependent upon vestibular activation, specifically saccular afferents. These new techniques are beginning to be applied clinically. An important application is in suspected cases of the T

INTRODUCTION: There are many, diverse nosological entities with the common factor of the genesis of cortical evoked potentials of great amplitude, commonly known as giant evoked potentials. In most cases they are conditions with the common clinical condition of myoclonic of cortical origin, such as progressive myoclonic epilepsy, generalized idiopathic epilepsy, myoclonias of toxic, infectious or postanoxic origin. Giant potentials have been shown both in studies of focal hemisphere lesions and in some cases of patients with corticobasal degeneration.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to s

INTRODUCTION: Chiari malformations (CM) include a series of congenital anomalies involving the descent of the cerebellar tonsils below the foramen magnum, which may be associated with compression in the brainstem, upper spinal cord, and cranial nerves, consequently altering the responses of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP). However, only a small number of authors have described the indications of these tests in CM, and study groups to date have been small and heterogeneous.
AIM: To review the results of BAEPs and SSEPs in published studies

Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP) are commonly recorded in patients experiencing vertigo or chronic instability. This test evaluates the patient's otolith function and is often combined with both Videonystagmography and Video Head Impulse Test. VEMP is a simple, reproducible test, in the absence of any pre-existing conductive hearing loss. Cervical VEMP explore both saccular function and the inferior vestibular nerve, whereas ocular VEMP assess utricular function and the superior vestibular nerve. In combination with previously described tests, VEMP allows characterization of vertig

The recording of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials is a relatively new neuro-otologic method which gives specific information about the function of the sacculus and the inferior vestibular nerve on each side separately. The main indications for this method are vestibular schwannoma and fistula of the labyrinth, involvement of the sacculus or the inferior vestibular nerve in Menière's disease and vestibular neuritis, vertigo of unknown etiology, and forensic questions.

Evoked potentials (EP) were analysed in patients with idiopathic form of Parkinson's disease (PD) in terms of three modalities: visual EP of chess pattern, acoustic EP of brain stem and somato-sensory EP during stimulation of median and tibial nerves. The data were compared with clinical characteristics. The conclusion was drawn about evident participation of afferent systems in PD development which is apparently secondary.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vestibular evoked myogenic potential testing is the only clinically feasible way to measure function of the saccule. Interest in this test has exploded in recent years because of its potential utility in diagnosing third-window disorders and in diagnosing and monitoring Ménière's disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature on vestibular evoked myogenic potential covers a wide range of topics. Review articles, method articles and many case reports and uncontrolled case series are seeking new applications for vestibular evoked myogenic potential in diagnosis and monitoring of

In 25 patients with cysticercosis of central nervous system, classified in two clinical forms, benign and malign, evoked potentials were obtained. Normal exam was found in 9 cases with the benign form. From 4 patients with malign clinical presentations, 2 had multiple abnormalities of the evoked potentials, and F wave alterations (mixed pattern). The authors suggest that this mixed pattern may be indicative of severe prognosis.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have obtained widespread clinical application in assessing neurologic and audiologic problems. Seven waves (I-VII) are usually recorded in the first 10 ms following broad-band and high-intensity clicks. Latencies of waves I, III, and V, interpeak latencies of I-III, III-V, and I-V, and the amplitude ratio of wave V to wave I are common parameters evaluated for assessing clinically relevant abnormalities of BAEPs. Usually two-channel recordings are obtained: vertex (Cz) to ipsilateral ear and Cz to contralateral earlobe derivation. Evaluating differe

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the value of dermatomal somatosensory evoked potentials (DSEPs) and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) in monitoring spinal cord function for patients with congenital scoliosis (CS).
METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of patients (n = 102) who underwent DSEP (T2-S1 dermatome), of whom 60 were normal subjects and 62 with congenital scoliosis. The study analyzed the latencies and peaks of N1-L, N1-R, P1-L and P1-R recorded by DSEPs of patients' thoracolumbar dermatomes. To observe the incidence of abnormal

Measurements of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and middle latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) are readily available neurophysiologic assessments. The generators for BAEP are believed to involve the structures of cochlear nerve, cochlear nucleus, superior olive complex, dorsal and rostral pons, and lateral lemniscus. The generators for MLAEP are assumed to be located in the subcortical area and auditory cortex. BAEP are commonly used in evaluating children with autistic and hearing disorders. However, measurement of MLAEP is rarely performed in young children. To explore the

OBJECTIVE: Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) play a less important role in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) than visually evoked potentials. Since standard SEPs only reflect the dorsal column function, we now investigated spinothalamic tract function in patients with MS using laser-evoked potentials (LEPs).
METHODS: LEPs to thulium laser stimuli (3ms, 540 mJ, 5mm diameter) were recorded from 3 midline positions (Fz, Cz, Pz) in 20 patients with MS, and 6 patients with possible but unconfirmed MS. Peak latencies and peak-to-peak amplitude of the vertex potential negativity (N2) and
