Auditory evoked potentials.

Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) are an electrical manifestation of the brain response to an auditory stimulus. Mid-latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEPs) and the coherent frequency of the AEP are the most promising for monitoring depth of anaesthesia. MLAEPs show graded changes with increasing anaesthetic concentration over the clinical concentration range. The latencies of Pa and Nb lengthen and their amplitudes reduce. These changes in features of waveform are similar with both inhaled and intravenous anaesthetics. Changes in latency of Pa and Nb waves are highly correlated to a trans

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have obtained widespread clinical application in assessing neurologic and audiologic problems. Seven waves (I-VII) are usually recorded in the first 10 ms following broad-band and high-intensity clicks. Latencies of waves I, III, and V, interpeak latencies of I-III, III-V, and I-V, and the amplitude ratio of wave V to wave I are common parameters evaluated for assessing clinically relevant abnormalities of BAEPs. Usually two-channel recordings are obtained: vertex (Cz) to ipsilateral ear and Cz to contralateral earlobe derivation. Evaluating differe

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and middle latency auditory evoked potentials in young children.

Measurements of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and middle latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) are readily available neurophysiologic assessments. The generators for BAEP are believed to involve the structures of cochlear nerve, cochlear nucleus, superior olive complex, dorsal and rostral pons, and lateral lemniscus. The generators for MLAEP are assumed to be located in the subcortical area and auditory cortex. BAEP are commonly used in evaluating children with autistic and hearing disorders. However, measurement of MLAEP is rarely performed in young children. To explore the

[Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials in Chiari malformation].

INTRODUCTION: Chiari malformations (CM) include a series of congenital anomalies involving the descent of the cerebellar tonsils below the foramen magnum, which may be associated with compression in the brainstem, upper spinal cord, and cranial nerves, consequently altering the responses of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP). However, only a small number of authors have described the indications of these tests in CM, and study groups to date have been small and heterogeneous. AIM: To review the results of BAEPs and SSEPs in published studies

[Evoked auditory potentials in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia].

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (greater than 20 mg%) is an audiological risk factor. In order to check early detection of bilirubin-induced neurological damage in the brainstem, 19 newborns were enrolled in the present study. The criteria was a bilirubin level ranging from 12 to 20 mg%. A likely mechanism for bilirubin intoxication may be the slowing and desynchronization of acoustic stimuli in the brainstem. Auditory brainstem responses were performed using non filtered clicks at 100 dB SPL (peak equivalent). Absolute and interpeak latencies of waves I and V were measured and correlated to bilir

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in meningomyelocele.

The brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) of twenty-seven Myelomeningocele (MMC) patients were analyzed and compared with the results of a normal population. The longest wave V or V-I interpeak latencies were seen in patients with shunted hydrocephalus and cranial nerve defects. The shortest wave V and V-I interpeak latencies were found in patients without hydrocephalus. However, these latencies of MMC patients were significantly longer than the latencies of a normal population. Wave I latencies of all MMC subgroups were not significantly different from the results of the normal probands

Auditory evoked potentials in vitiligo patients.

There is convincing evidence that vitiligo is a systemic disorder influencing the whole pigmentary system, including melanocytes in the inner ear. Cochlear melanocytes and also melanin-containing cellular elements of the auditory system may be affected in vitiligo and interfere with the conduction of action potentials. We conducted a prospective clinical trial to determine hearing status and auditory evoked potentials in 50 patients affected by vitiligo and compared the results with those of 50 healthy controls. I, III, V latencies and amplitudes and I-III, III-V, I-V interpeak latencies were

Auditory evoked potentials in Rett syndrome.

This study was designed to assess auditory function in subjects with Rett syndrome, a rare neurologic disorder that is characterized by progressive symptoms of dementia, ataxia, respiratory disorder, and communication disorder. Auditory evoked potentials, including the auditory brainstem response (ABR), middle latency response (MLR), and late vertex response (LVR), were recorded in 36 subjects with Rett syndrome. Results showed a systematic decline in auditory function from the peripheral to the central auditory system, with normal ABR in all subjects, normal MLR in 50 percent of subjects, and

Auditory evoked potentials in epileptic patients.

Auditory brain stem response (ABR) and middle latency response (MLR) were recorded in 49 epileptic patients. Responses were evoked and recorded at 90 dB nHL down to threshold. A statistically significant number of epileptic patients showed elevated ABR (30.1%) and MLR (40.7%) thresholds, even though their pure-tone audiograms showed normal hearing sensitivity. Threshold elevation was more frequent in subjects with grand mal epilepsy compared to subjects with temporal lobe epilepsy reflecting poorer response in the former subgroup. Furthermore, chronicity of illness was significantly related to

Auditory distortion products measured with averaged auditory evoked potentials.

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the properties of averaged auditory evoked potential distortion products (AEP-DPs) in guinea pigs. This study provided a step toward developing a clinical index of nonlinear processing of auditory signals and supplied a baseline for studies evaluating the effect of cochlear damage on AEP-DPs. The amplitude of the AEP-DPs was evaluated as a function of f2/f1 ratio (1.12-1.52) and primary frequency (500 Hz-2000 Hz). The amplitude of the AEP cubic difference tone (AEP-CDT) increased with increasing f2/f1 ratio for the 500-Hz f1 primary and remaine

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials in blast injury.

Blast injury typically consists of a mixed conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. The sensorineural component includes temporary as well as permanent threshold elevations. Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) are sensitive to functional changes in various levels along the auditory pathway. ABEP were recorded from 37 survivors of blasts and latency measures were correlated with clinical findings. Prolongation of peak latencies was correlated with the conductive component of blast-induced hearing loss, as well as with the TTS component of the sensorineural impairment. No central effec

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in enteric encephalopathy (EE).

BAEPs and SEPs were studied in 25 patients of enteric encephalopathy in acute phase and the results were compared with 25 healthy control persons. In the study the important observations of BAEPs were delayed peak latency of wave III, wave V and delayed ILP I-V, and of SEPs was prolonged peak latency of N20. The electrophysiological evidence suggests metabolic cause for the coma and the SEP changes were similar to those observed in cerebral malaria reported earlier in this laboratory.

Magnetic fields normalize visual evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

The present communication concerns a 46 year old woman with a 10 year history of chronic progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) in whom external application of magnetic fields (MF) (7.5 picoTesla; 5 Hz) during a period of remission resulted in a rapid and dramatic improvement in symptoms including vision, cerebellar symptomatology (ataxia and dysarthria), mood, sleep, bowel and bladder functions as well as fatigue. Improvement in the patient's symptoms was associated with normalization of the pretreatment latencies of the visual evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potential responses

Auditory evoked response potentials in somatization disorder.

Event related potentials to frequently and infrequently occurring tones were recorded from 15 patients with somatization disorder, 10 patients with anxiety disorders and 15 normals. P3 component responses were of normal latency and amplitude in the somatizers, which suggests they had no apparent difficulty with certain aspects of processing novel, task-relevant stimuli. However, their N1 component responses to the frequent tones, which subjects had been instructed to ignore, were enhanced relative to each of the other groups. Moreover, there was no difference in N1 amplitude to the two types o

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials during sleep apnea.

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEPs) were recorded from seven subjects with predominantly central sleep apnea. ABEPs were recorded during: (1) waking, (2) non-REM sleep between apneic episodes, (3) first half of apneas, and (4) second half of apneas. Latencies of vertex positive peaks III, V, and VI as well as the V-III interpeak latency difference were determined, and the effect of apnea phase on these measures were evaluated. The measures studied did not reveal chronic or acute functional abnormality of auditory brainstem, which may result from or cause apneic episodes during non-REM
