Dermatomal somatosensory evoked potentials and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials assessment in congenital scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the value of dermatomal somatosensory evoked potentials (DSEPs) and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) in monitoring spinal cord function for patients with congenital scoliosis (CS). METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of patients (n = 102) who underwent DSEP (T2-S1 dermatome), of whom 60 were normal subjects and 62 with congenital scoliosis. The study analyzed the latencies and peaks of N1-L, N1-R, P1-L and P1-R recorded by DSEPs of patients' thoracolumbar dermatomes. To observe the incidence of abnormal

Pudendal cortical somatosensory evoked potentials.

To determine normal reference latencies pudendal cortical somatosensory evoked potentials were evaluated in 20 healthy volunteers. The dorsal nerve of the penis or clitoris was stimulated electrically and the cortical response was recorded from the CZ-2 point (2 cm. behind the central vertex). Reproducible responses were obtained and reference values were established.

Somatosensory evoked potentials in syringomyelia.

The two types of upper limb somatosensory evoked potential abnormality observed in nine patients with syringomyelia were reduced amplitude or absent cervical potentials and an abnormal central conduction time. Although this pattern of abnormalities resembles that observed in other intrinsic spinal cord lesions, it differs from peripheral nerve diseases and cervical radiculopathy in which the central conduction time is normal.

[Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials in Chiari malformation].

INTRODUCTION: Chiari malformations (CM) include a series of congenital anomalies involving the descent of the cerebellar tonsils below the foramen magnum, which may be associated with compression in the brainstem, upper spinal cord, and cranial nerves, consequently altering the responses of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP). However, only a small number of authors have described the indications of these tests in CM, and study groups to date have been small and heterogeneous. AIM: To review the results of BAEPs and SSEPs in published studies

Somatosensory evoked potentials in neonatal jaundice.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were studied in jaundiced and normal neonates on the day the highest bilirubin values were reached, 2-3 days later, and at five weeks. During the first week three groups were formed according to peak bilirubin values: A: greater than or equal to 250 mumol/l (n = 20), B: 125-250 mumol/l (n = 6), C: less than 125 mumol/l or no jaundice (n = 19). At five weeks 10 infants of group A were reinvestigated, together with 17 controls. Cervical (N13) and scalp SEPs (N19) were recorded with a variable number of stimuli. The SEPs of group B and C did not differ from

[Somatosensory evoked potentials in intraspinal tumors].

SEPs have been recorded in 15 patients with spinal cord tumors (mostly ependymomas) and in 5 patients with cord compression due to meningiomas (3 cas), neuromas (1 case) or neurosarcoma (1 cas). All the patients have been operated on so that precise informations were available on the histology and the location of the tumor. SEPs were monitored during surgery in 8 patients. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: There was a good correlation between the somatosensory troubles for touch, vibration sense and joint position sense, and SEPs abnormalities, however, SEPs may be clearly abn

Somatosensory evoked potentials in aphasic patients.

The purpose of this study was to employ evoked potentials to evaluate the function of the somatosensory system in a group of right hemiplegic aphasic patients in whom conventional physical examination was inapplicable. Bilateral somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in response to stimulation of the median nerve were recorded in 20 patients, and unilateral recordings were performed with 20 healthy, aged, matched controls. The major abnormality, present in 13 patients, was absence or reduction of the amplitude of the cortical components N19 and P22 in the lesioned side of the brain. Consequent

Somatosensory evoked potentials after removal of somatosensory cortex in man.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median nerve, ulnar nerve, thumb, middle finger, and posterior tibial nerve stimulation were recorded in a patient with a discrete resection of part of the postcentral somatosensory cortex as a treatment for focal epilepsy. Comparison of the different stimulation sites confirmed electrophysiologically the restricted locus of the lesion. The results strongly suggest that the early negative component (N20) and subsequent components recorded postcentrally are of cortical origin and depend upon postcentral gyrus cytoarchitectonic areas 3, 2, and 1. Somatosensory evoked potentials are abnormal with plagiocephaly.

BACKGROUND: Deformational plagiocephaly is usually managed conservatively, as it tends to improve over time and with the use of conservative measures. However, before the year 2017 we operated on patients with severe plagiocephaly and neurological symptoms at the Helsinki Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Center. METHODS: Of the 20 infants with severe deformational plagiocephaly and neurological symptoms referred to us between 2014 and 2016, 10 underwent cranioplasty open reshaping of the posterior cranial vault. The parents of the last 10 patients were given information on the natural history of

Sex differences in pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) of the pudendal nerve are a well-established diagnostic tool for the evaluation of pelvic floor disorders. However, the possible influence of sex differences on response latencies has not been established yet. The aim of this study was to standardize the procedures and to evaluate possible effects of gender differences on anal and penile/clitoral SEPs. METHODS: The anal and dorsal penile/clitoral SEPs were recorded in 84 healthy subjects (40 males and 44 females; mean age 47.9 ± 16.6 years, range 16-81 years; mean height 168.3 ± 20.3 cm, rang

Pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials in normal women.

OBJECTIVE: Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) is an electrophysiological test used to evaluate sensory innervations in peripheral and central neuropathies. Pudendal SSEP has been studied in dysfunctions related to the lower urinary tract and pelvic floor. Although some authors have already described technical details pertaining to the method, the standardization and the influence of physiological variables in normative values have not yet been established, especially for women. The aim of the study was to describe normal values of the pudendal SSEP and to compare technical details with thos

Somatosensory evoked potentials of inferior alveolar nerve.

PURPOSE: The use of inferior alveolar nerve somatosensory evoked potentials may represent an objective means of evaluating sensory nerve function in the maxillofacial region. The aim of this work was to confirm the existence of a standard sequence of prominent events in the trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEPs) of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) waveform, examine those components and their normal variability by statistical analysis, and discuss TSEPs' nervous origin and some patterns of TSEPs' abnormalities due to dysfunctional nerves. MATERIALS AND METHODS: TSEPs were obtained fol

Somatosensory evoked potentials in cerebral aneurysm surgery.

Monitoring of median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) during surgery for a basilar artery aneurysm under moderate hypothermia revealed an unexpected loss of the first cortical peak. This was due to compression of the middle cerebral artery under the retractor during the surgical approach to the aneurysm and would have continued unnoticed for some time in the absence of monitoring, possibly resulting in infarction in the territory of the middle cerebral artery. When the surgeon was alerted the artery was released and the evoked potential returned within about 24 min. There was no ne

Somatosensory evoked potentials in spinal cord diseases.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were studied in 115 patients with spinal cord diseases (multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cervical myelopathy, subacute combined degeneration, myelitis, spinal cord injury, tumours). The SEPs were recorded at three levels: parietal, spinal (cervical or lumbar), and at the Erb point. The central conduction time was also estimated (N9-N13 and lumbar potential (LP): LP-P37). The most sensitive test (95% abnormalities) was represented by the cortical recording of the SEPs when the tibial nerve was stimulated. The interval LP-P37 was increased

Somatosensory evoked potentials in the ventrolateral thalamus.

Within the target area (VL) used for the stereotactic treatment of parkinsonian tremor and spasmodic torticollis, electrical stimulation as well as recording of somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) was performed. The effects of stimulation in the target area are facilitation of muscle tone showing some degree of somatotopic distribution. The recorded SEPs indicate a projection of an afferent system (probably of muscle afferents) to the target area. We assume that the target area is a relay station involved in the control of muscle tone. The interruption of muscle afferents in combination with

Spinal cord pathways mediating somatosensory evoked potentials.

Using a CO2 laser, discrete thoracic spinal cord lesions were made in cats anesthetized with ketamine and xylazine (Rompun). Differences in cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP's) produced with high-intensity stimulation (20 times the motor threshold) of each posterior tibial nerve determined for nine different combinations of unilateral spinal cord lesions. The results of these studies show that nerve fibers in the ipsilateral dorsal column, the ipsilateral dorsal spinocerebellar tract, and the contralateral ventrolateral tracts with respect to the side of leg stimulation, contribute

Neonatal somatosensory evoked potentials persist during hypothermia.

AIM: Treatment with therapeutic hypothermia has challenged the use of amplitude-integrated electroencephalography in predicting outcomes after perinatal asphyxia. In this study, we assessed the feasibility and gain of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) during hypothermia. METHODS: This retrospective study comprised neonates from 35 + 6 to 42 + 2 gestational weeks and treated for asphyxia or hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy at Helsinki University Hospital between 14 February 2007 and 23 December 2009. This period was partly before the introduction of routine therapeutic hypothermia, which e

Somatosensory evoked potentials in progressive supranuclear palsy.

We report median and digital nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in 14 patients with probable progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) along with transcortical long-loop reflexes, motor evoked potentials, and auditory startle responses. Enlarged cortical responses were found in 14 median and 13 digital nerve SEP studies, while long-loop reflexes were increased in only one patient. All motor evoked potential studies were normal. Auditory startle responses were either absent or reduced in 11 patients. The observed neurophysiological abnormalities may reflect cortical hyperexcitability but a
