Temporal variation of planetary iron as a driver of evolution.

Iron is an irreplaceable component of proteins and enzyme systems required for life. This need for iron is a well-characterized evolutionary mechanism for genetic selection. However, there is limited consideration of how iron bioavailability, initially determined by planetary accretion but fluctuating considerably at global scale over geological time frames, has shaped the biosphere. We describe influences of iron on planetary habitability from formation events >4 Gya and initiation of biochemistry from geochemistry through oxygenation of the atmosphere to current host-pathogen dynamics. The role of biology in planetary evolution: cyanobacterial primary production in low-oxygen Proterozoic oceans.

Understanding the role of biology in planetary evolution remains an outstanding challenge to geobiologists. Progress towards unravelling this puzzle for Earth is hindered by the scarcity of well-preserved rocks from the Archean (4.0 to 2.5 Gyr ago) and Proterozoic (2.5 to 0.5 Gyr ago) Eons. In addition, the microscopic life that dominated Earth's biota for most of its history left a poor fossil record, consisting primarily of lithified microbial mats, rare microbial body fossils and membrane-derived hydrocarbon molecules that are still challenging to interpret. However, it is clear from the su

The Emergence of an Urable Earth: How Early Planetary Evolution Shaped the Chemical Window for Life's Origin.

Earth's early history provides the only natural record for evaluating how planetary evolution can generate environments capable of initiating life. Here we review early Earth evolution through the lens of urability: the time-dependent capacity of planetary environments to support prebiotic chemistry progressing toward compartmentalized, self-propagating, information-bearing systems. We argue that urability is not a single globally habitable state, but a transient overlap among several coupled dimensions: liquid water availability, permissive temperature, ocean pH and salinity, access to bioess

An efficient lightning energy source on the early Earth.

Miller and Urey suggested in 1959 that lightning and corona on the early Earth could have been the most favorable sources of prebiotic synthesis. In 1991 Chyba and Sagan reviewed the presently prevailing data on electrical discharges on Earth and they raised questions as to whether the electrical sources of prebiotic synthesis were as favorable as was claimed. The proposal of the present paper is that localized lightning sources associated with Archaean volcanoes could have possessed considerable advantages for prebiotic synthesis over the previously suggested global sources.

Review on the Role of Planetary Factors on Habitability.

In this work various factors on the habitability were considered, focusing on conditions irrespective of the central star's radiation, to see the role of specific planetary body related effects. These so called planetary factors were evaluated to identify those trans-domain issues where important information is missing but good chance exit to be filled by new knowledge that might be gained in the next decade(s). Among these strategic knowledge gaps, specific issues are listed, like occurrence of radioactive nucleides in star forming regions, models to estimate the existence of subsurface liqui

Cryoconite pans on Snowball Earth: supraglacial oases for Cryogenian eukaryotes?

Geochemical, paleomagnetic, and geochronological data increasingly support the Snowball Earth hypothesis for Cryogenian glaciations. Yet, the fossil record reveals no clear-cut evolutionary bottleneck. Climate models and the modern cryobiosphere offer insights on this paradox. Recent modeling implies that Snowball continents never lacked ice-free areas. Wind-blown dust from these areas plus volcanic ash were trapped by snow on ice sheets and sea ice. At a Snowball onset, sea ice was too thin to flow and ablative ice was too cold for dust retention. After a few millenia, sea ice reached 100 s o

The Prebiotic Provenance of Semi-Aqueous Solvents.

The numerous and varied roles of phosphorylated organic molecules in biochemistry suggest they may have been important to the origin of life. The prominence of phosphorylated molecules presents a conundrum given that phosphorylation is a thermodynamically unfavorable, endergonic process in water, and most natural sources of phosphate are poorly soluble. We recently demonstrated that a semi-aqueous solvent consisting of urea, ammonium formate, and water (UAFW) supports the dissolution of phosphate and the phosphorylation of nucleosides. However, the prebiotic feasibility and robustness of the U

A Possible Prebiotic Ancestry of Porphyrin-Type Protein Cofactors.

In previous experiments that simulated conditions on primordial volcanic islands, we demonstrated the abiotic formation of hydrophobic porphyrins. The present study focused on the question whether such porphyrins can be metalated by prebiotically plausible metal ion sources. We used water-insoluble octaethylporphyrin (H2oep) as a model compound. Experiments were conducted in a nitrogen atmosphere under cyclic wet-dry conditions in order to simulate the fluctuating environment in prebiotic rock pools. Wetting-drying proved to be a crucial factor. Significant yields of the metalloporphyrins (20-

Are polyphosphates or phosphate esters prebiotic reagents?

It is widely held that there was a phosphate compound in prebiotic chemistry that played the role of adenosine triphosphate and that the first living organisms had ribose-phosphate in the backbone of their genetic material. However, there are no known efficient prebiotic synthesis of high-energy phosphates or phosphate esters. We review the occurrence of phosphates in Nature, the efficiency of the volcanic synthesis of P4O10, the efficiency of polyphosphate synthesis by heating phosphate minerals under geological conditions, and the use of high-energy organic compounds such as cyanamide or hyd

The historic biogeography of India: isolation or contact?

Geophysical maps depicting continental movement have consistently shown India, as it moved northward, to be located far out in the Tethys Sea. India split off from the African east coast about 148 m.y.a. From that time onward, according to almost all geophysical accounts, India was isolated from all of other continents until the early Miocene when it made contact with Eurasia. But the biological data, both fossil and Recent, indicate that this concept cannot be correct. If India had really existed as an isolated, oceanic continent for about 100 m.y., it should have developed a peculiar biota w

Hydrated salt minerals on Ganymede's surface: evidence of an ocean below.

Reflectance spectra from Galileo's near-infrared mapping spectrometer (NIMS) suggests that the surface of Ganymede, the largest satellite of Jupiter, contains hydrated materials. These materials are interpreted to be similar to those found on Europa, that is, mostly frozen magnesium sulfate brines that are derived from a subsurface briny layer of fluid.

The atmosphere of the primitive earth and the prebiotic synthesis of organic compounds.

The prebiotic synthesis of organic compounds using a spark discharge on various simulated prebiotic atmospheres at 25 degrees has been studied. Methane mixtures contained H2 + CH4 + H2O + N2 + NH3 with H2/CH4 molar ratios from 0 to 4 and pNH3 = 0.1 torr. A similar set of experiments without added NH3 was performed. The yields of amino acids (1.2 to 4.7% based on the carbon) are approximately independent of the H2/CH4 ratio and the presence of added NH3, and a wide variety of amino acids are obtained. Mixtures of H2 + CO + H2O + N2 and H2 + CO2 + H2O + N2, with and without added NH3, all give a

Cassini spacecraft reveals global energy imbalance of saturn.

The global energy budget is pivotal to understanding planetary evolution and climate behaviors. Assessing the energy budget of giant planets, particularly those with large seasonal cycles, however, remains a challenge without long-term observations. Evolution models of Saturn cannot explain its estimated Bond albedo and internal heat flux, mainly because previous estimates were based on limited observations. Here, we analyze the long-term observations recorded by the Cassini spacecraft and find notably higher Bond albedo (0.41 ± 0.02) and internal heat flux (2.84 ± 0.20 Wm-2) values than previ

Experimental simulation of early Martian volcanic lightning.

A mixture of possible Martian volcanic gases were reproduced and irradiated by a high-energy infrared laser to reproduce the effects of lightning on the production of prebiotic molecules. The analysis of products were performed by a gas chromatograph interfaced in parallel with a FTIR-detector and a quadrupole mass spectrometer equipped with an electron impact and chemical ionization modes. The main products identified were hydrocarbons and an uncharacterized yellow film deposit. Preliminary results indicate the presence of hydrogen cyanide among the resultant compounds.

CO2 greenhouse in the early martian atmosphere: SO2 inhibits condensation.

Many investigators of the early martian climate have suggested that a dense carbon dioxide atmosphere was present and warmed the surface above the melting point of water (J.B. Pollack, J.F. Kasting, S.M. Richardson, and K. Poliakoff 1987. Icarus 71, 203-224). However, J.F. Kasting (1991. Icarus 94, 1-13) pointed out that previous thermal models of the primitive martian atmosphere had not considered the condensation of CO2. When this effect was incorporated, Kasting found that CO2 by itself is inadequate to warm the surface. SO2 absorbs strongly in the near UV region of the solar spectrum. Whil

Salts on Europa's surface detected by Galileo's near infrared mapping spectrometer. The NIMS Team.

Reflectance spectra in the 1- to 2.5-micrometer wavelength region of the surface of Europa obtained by Galileo's Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer exhibit distorted water absorption bands that indicate the presence of hydrated minerals. The laboratory spectra of hydrated salt minerals such as magnesium sulfates and sodium carbonates and mixtures of these minerals provide a close match to the Europa spectra. The distorted bands are only observed in the optically darker areas of Europa, including the lineaments, and may represent evaporite deposits formed by water, rich in dissolved salts, reac

A retrograde planet in a tight binary star system with a white dwarf.

Close-in companion stars are expected to adversely influence the formation and orbital stability of circumstellar (S-type) planets by tidally truncating protoplanetary discs1-4, impeding mutual accretion of planetesimals5-8 and narrowing dynamically stable regions9. This explains the observed dearth of S-type planets in tight binary star systems10-13. ν Octantis, whose stellar components have a mean separation of 2.6 AU, has long been suspected of hosting a circum-primary planet in a retrograde and exceptionally wide orbit that resides midway between the stars14-20. Gravity as a Physical Selector of Chemical Evolution and the Origin of Life.

The origin of life signifies one of science's most profound mysteries, demanding integrative comprehension from chemistry, biology, and physics. In this review we examine the coupled roles of chemical evolution, biological evolution, gravity and light in shaping the earliest stages of life. We discuss how conditions established by the Big Bang, stellar nucleosynthesis and early planetary environments provided the energetic conditions necessary for the emergence of prebiotic chemistry. Going beyond the geocentric perspective, we explore extraterrestrial chemistry and analyze how gravitational f
