Malnutrition early in life impairs the development of brain as well as behavior. In the present study the behavioral effects of preweaning pyridoxine deficiency in rats, as reflected by their exploratory score, have been investigated. The results clearly indicated that the body weight of pyridoxine-deficient rats was significantly less when compared to the control rats. Besides this, the sign of maturation of sensory perceptual mechanisms like the first day of eye opening and signs of maturation of neuromotor coordination like the day of supported standing are delayed in vitamin-deficient rats

The delineation of sensorimotor circuits that guide exploration begins with an understanding of the pattern of motor outputs [1]. These motor patterns provide a clue to the form of the underlying circuits [2-4] (but see [5]). We focus on the behaviors that rodents use to explore their peripersonal space through goal-directed positioning of their nose, head, and vibrissae. Rodents sniff in response to novel odors, reward expectation, and as part of social interactions [6-12]. Sniffing serves olfaction [13, 14], while whisking synchronized to sniffing serves vibrissa-based touch [6, 15, 16]. We

BACKGROUND: The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val158Met gene influences cognition and behavior in psychiatric illnesses; its low-activity allele, methionine (Met), may be associated with behavior reflecting catecholamine overactivity. Heightened motor activity and increased positive valence are central features of bipolar disorder (BD) and have been quantified in the human Behavioral Pattern Monitor (hBPM), an exploration paradigm based upon the rodent open field. We examined whether hBPM behavior was related to the COMT gene in a small sample of manic BD patients.

BACKGROUND: Neuroevolution comprises the use of evolutionary computation to define the architecture and/or to train artificial neural networks (ANNs). This strategy has been employed to investigate the behavior of rats in the elevated plus-maze, which is a widely used tool for studying anxiety in mice and rats.
NEW METHOD: Here we propose a neuroevolutionary model, in which both the weights and the architecture of artificial neural networks (our virtual rats) are evolved by a genetic algorithm.
COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S): This model is an improvement of a previous model that involves

A method to measure various aspects of exploratory behavior was further characterized using standard pharmacological treatments known to induce anxiety, or anxiolysis, or locomotor activation. FG 7142, an anxiogenic beta-carboline, induced a dose-dependent reduction in the rat exploratory behavior. A single FG 7142 (20 mg/kg) treatment before behavioral testing had a carry-over effect on rats' behavioral performance on the two subsequent days. When FG 7142 (20 mg/kg) was administered during five consecutive days before behavioral testing, its anxiogenic-like effect first deepened, but waned of

Substance dependence is a disorder that alters the functioning of the nervous system due to frequent abuse of drugs. The role of dopamine in the addictive effect of psychostimulants is well known; however, the involvement of the noradrenergic system is still unclear and poorly understood, though drugs like cocaine and amphetamines are known to exert significant activity on this system. The drug modafinil (MOD) has no proven addictive effect. It promotes wakefulness by acting mainly on the dopaminergic system and, to a lesser degree, the noradrenergic (NOR) system. Atomoxetine (ATX) is a non-st

BACKGROUND: Personality traits have been associated with a series of dysfunctional behaviors, ranging from violence to drug abuse and other risky behaviors. However, few studies have investigated motorcycle riders' personality traits, and no research using the psychobiological model of personality was found. Thus, we investigated the association between temperament and character traits and the occurrence of Motorcycle Accidents (MAs).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with a randomly selected of 153 Brazilian motorcycle riders (116 male and 37 female) with a mean age of 31.8ra

The exploratory behavior of pigs was studied in two successive daily 20-mn sessions in a two-compartment box by counting the number of crossings from one compartment to the other and observing the activity patterns. Injection of 1 mg/kg diazepam before the first session increased the number of crossings without affecting the temporal decline of activity within the session; treated pigs did not attempt to escape the experimental situation and tended to be more perseverative in their activity patterns than control pigs. Injected before the second session, diazepam did not modify the exploratory

Network communication in the CNS relies upon multiple neuronal and glial signaling pathways. In addition to synaptic transmission, other organelles such as mitochondria play roles in cellular signaling. One highly conserved mitochondrial signaling mechanism involves the 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO) of the outer mitochondrial membrane. Originally, TSPO was identified as a binding site for benzodiazepines in the periphery. It was later discovered that TSPO is found in mitochondria, including in CNS cells. TSPO is implicated in multiple cellular processes, including the translocation of cho

Infants learn about objects by exploring them. Typically developing infants actively explore objects through visual, manual, and oral modalities. Attenuated exploratory behavior has been observed in various neurodevelopmental disorders, including Down syndrome (DS), presumably limiting learning options. However, a direct link between exploration and overall developmental functioning has not been characterized. This study used a Latent Profile Analysis framework to examine within-syndrome variability in exploratory behavior in infants with DS and the developmental correlates of different explor

The response of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni to a novel environment has been investigated in an attempt to study the effects of the disease on brain cognitive function by using opto-varimix instrument and autotrack computer program. Two to 18 weeks infected mice showed lower ambulatory activities than their matched controls with the largest reduction occurring between weeks 6 to 10. Maximum effects were observed in week 8. The first 5 minutes of ambulatory activities, designated as the "first session", were 22.3% lower in infected mice as compared with controls. The decline in the fi

Perinatal exposure to diazepam has been shown to lead to alterations in motor activity and exploratory behavior in neonatal animals. Exploratory and locomotor behavior have been associated with changes in mesotelencephalic dopamine function. We have therefore examined the effects of perinatal diazepam administration on both exploratory behavior and mesotelencephalic dopamine turnover in the adult rat. Animals exposed to the benzodiazepine during the perinatal period engaged in significantly less exploratory behavior than did control subjects. The diazepam-induced alterations in behavior were d

While an increasing number of animals are produced by means of somatic cloning, behavioral studies on cloned animals are still rare. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the somatic cloning procedure has an influence on locomotion, exploratory, vocal and social behaviors of heifers. Ten heifers were used in the present study. Five of them were cloned heifers derived from somatic cells of three different Prim'Holstein cows and five others were same-age control heifers produced by artificial insemination. In addition to observations of social behaviors in the stable group, each anima

BACKGROUND: The field of behavioral addictions (BA) research addresses activity domains such as excessive gaming, gambling, and other online behaviors that influence public health policies. A failure to embrace open science practices may lead to concerns about the trustworthiness and reliability of its research outputs. This study explored the current use of open science practices among BA researchers, focusing on the adoption, underlying motivations, concerns, and support needs across seven specific open science practices.
METHODS: We distributed an exploratory survey through professional ne

INTRODUCTION: Goats are highly social animals that establish complex hierarchical and affiliative relationships within their herds. Understanding these social dynamics is fundamental to optimize animal welfare in sustainable livestock systems. In goats, a natural genetic variant causes dominant absence of horns (polledness). As this variant also has an influence on sex development (polled intersex syndrome, PIS), breeding for polledness can result in a higher proportion of intersexual goats in a flock. However, little is known about the behavioral roles and social integration of intersex goats

Snowmobilers make a grim and significant contribution to avalanche fatality statistics in Norway. However, there is limited knowledge on the behavior of this group in avalanche terrain and the factors influencing this behavior. Our study documents what snowmobilers do and not do in avalanche terrain, how their behavior relates to managing complex avalanche conditions and if there is a mismatch between avalanche competence, education and riding preferences. This ethnographic study observed snowmobiler tracks and thus avalanche terrain usage in Northern Norway during 2018 and 2019, supported by

Alterations in exploratory behavior are a fundamental feature of bipolar mania, typically characterized as motor hyperactivity and increased goal-directed behavior in response to environmental cues. In contrast, abnormal exploration associated with schizophrenia and depression can manifest as prominent withdrawal, limited motor activity, and inattention to the environment. While motor abnormalities are cited frequently as clinical manifestations of these disorders, relatively few empirical studies have quantified human exploratory behavior. This article reviews the literature characterizing mo

The purpose of this review is to assess the value of using tests of exploratory behavior to study the actions of benzodiazepines. The methods of measuring exploration and the factors influencing it are briefly described. The effects of benzodiazepines on exploratory behavior of rats and mice are reviewed; and the dangers of interpreting the results of such tests in terms of any of the clinical effects of the benzodiazepines is stressed. Finally, the interactions between benzodiazepines and other drugs acting at the GABA-benzodiazepine receptor complex are described. The results of these experi
