Can aid foster Africa's attainment of a just energy transition and external debt sustainability?

This study evaluated the relationship between Aid and Africa's potential to achieve the Just Energy Transition and external debt sustainability. In contrast to the instrumental variables technique, the paper employed a 2-step system GMM to analyze data from 39 African countries between 2012 and 2022. The paper also used 7 indicators of access to energy and electricity on both renewable and fossil fuels to measure the Just Energy Transition (JET) and 8 indicators to assess the external debt landscape of the sampled countries. The net official development assistance received per capital was used

COVID-19 economic stimulus packages, tourism industry and external debt: The influence of extreme poverty.

The COVID-19 outbreak has had a catastrophic effect on the tourism sector and poverty alleviation efforts. This is especially the case, given the crucial role the tourism sector plays in poverty alleviation and the generation of foreign exchange earnings. This study investigates the moderating influence of extreme poverty on the underlying link between the size of the tourism industry and COVID-19 Economic Stimulus Packages (ESPs) while accounting for the influence of external debt. The results show that tourism-dependent economies with a larger share of individuals living in extreme poverty i

Influence of public external debt on government health expenditure: A mixed-methods case study of Senegal.

Public external debt burdens of low- and middle-income countries have grown substantially over the past decade linked to increased borrowing. Our empirical understanding of how external official loans and their ensuing debt burden may impact government health spending at the individual country level is limited. We aimed to better understand these relationships through a case study of Senegal. We conducted a mixed-methods case study using descriptive quantitative analyses of loan, debt and health financing statistics in Senegal from 1970-2023. We also used the Framework method to thematically a

Aid, debt, International Monetary Fund conditionalities and domestic health financing in low- and middle-income countries.

Across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), public external debt burdens as well as the number of International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan conditionalities have grown over time. These externally derived macro-fiscal factors, along with official development assistance (ODA), may influence the fiscal space for health and policy decisions that co-determine to what extent countries finance their health systems with domestic government funds (GHE-S), and to what extent they rely on household out-of-pocket payments (OOP). The levels and balance of these sources have great implications for health

Leapfrogging toward Sustainability: The role of renewable energy, energy imports, and debt on Pakistan's carbon emissions.

This study investigates the impact of key economic and energy-related factors on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Pakistan from 1990 to 2021. Specifically, our study fills a research gap by analyzing how energy imports, external public debt, renewable energy consumption and economic growth influence carbon emissions. Employing ARDL and dynamic simulation models, this study assesses long-term and short-term relationship among the variables. Our findings reveal that in short run, energy imports, external public debt and economic growth significantly increase CO2 emissions, whereas renewable ene

Achieving HIV targets by 2030: the possibility of using debt relief funds for sustainable HIV treatment in sub-Saharan Africa.

This paper assesses the possibility of using debt relief funds to sustain HIV treatment in sub-Saharan Africa, suppress transmission, and reach global goals to quell the epidemic by 2030. The cost of providing antiretroviral treatment is a huge burden on African countries. Concerns for Africa's capacity to keep pace with global advances are well founded. By analysing levels of 'debt distress', health expenditure per capita, and HIV antiretroviral therapy requirements in sub-Saharan African countries, the need for innovative finance with international cooperation emerges clearly. In addition to

Financing Payouts

Over 40% of firms that make payouts also raise capital during the same year, resulting in 31% of aggregate share repurchases and dividends being externally financed, primarily with debt. Most externally financed payouts are the result of firms persistently setting payouts above free cash flow. The management of leverage and cash for tax optimization purposes is a key—but not the only—driver of payout-financing behavior. Debt-financed payouts are associated with increased firm financial fragility during the COVID-19 and other crises—but internally funded payouts are not. Our results highlight t

MAKING PUNISHMENT PAY: The Political Economy of Revenue, Race and Regime in the California Prison Boom.

Sociologists have neglected the politically channeled and racially connected role of leveraged debt in mass incarceration. We use qualitative and quantitative data from California, circa 1960-2000, to assess how Republican entrepreneurial leveraging of debt overcame contradictions between parochial preferences for punishment and resistance to paying taxes for building prisons. The leveraging of bond debt deferred and externalized the costs of building prisons, while repurposed lease revenue bonds massively enlarged and extended this debt and dispensed with the requirement for direct voter appr

Measuring health financing vulnerability due to reductions in official development assistance: A conceptual framework with empirical application across 47 African countries.

Despite a 33% increase in Official Development Assistance (ODA) from 2019 to 2023, aid declined by 7% in 2024 and projected to further decline in 2025-2027. Health systems in Africa are being impacted by the sudden aid freezes and cuts. There are no multicriteria metrics to estimate the vulnerability of countries to facilitate dialogue and decisions. This paper proposes an approach to assess country's vulnerability to external aid cuts, considering dynamic health financing and macro-fiscal risk factors. We proposed a framework using four proxy health financing and macro-fiscal factors. Using a

Elucidating the alcohol-sleep-hangover relationship in college students using a daily diary approach.

This daily diary study expands knowledge of the pharmacological alcohol-sleep relationship using a multilevel modeling approach. The interplay between alcohol and sleep on hangover susceptibility is also explored. College students (n = 337; 52 % female) provided 2976 days of self-reported alcohol use. We regressed sleep duration onto accumulated sleep debt, prior night sleep duration, and estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC) at bedtime; linear mixed models disaggregated day and person-level effects. Binomial models, assessing days after drinking when eBAC = 0 % versus when eBAC>0 % at

Household financial management behavior and catastrophic health expenditure risk in rural China: the moderating role of health insurance coverage.

INTRODUCTION: Catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) represents a major cause of poverty among rural households in China. Although health insurance coverage in rural China exceeds 95%, CHE incidence remains high, and existing research has predominantly focused on external protection mechanisms such as health insurance, with insufficient attention to household financial management capacity. METHODS: Drawing on data from 17,156 rural households in the 2019 China Household Finance Survey, this study constructed a financial management behavior index encompassing four dimensions: saving behavior, a

Mercury Debt: Molecular Mechanisms and Exposome Mapping of Persistent Post-Amalgam Exposure.

Following EU restrictions on dental amalgam from January 1, 2025, and the Minamata Convention's COP-6 decision to phase out dental amalgam globally by 2034, the era of amalgam restorations is drawing to a close. However, populations with historical mercury exposure may retain persistent, species-dependent tissue mercury burdens, particularly within the kidney and brain. This persistent body burden may prolong internal mercury exposure after cessation or substantial reduction of the external source. We propose "Mercury Debt" as a conceptual construct describing residual, species-specific intern

Bifurcations and Hyperchaos in Mathematical Models of Sleep.

Sleep regulation is generated by interacting nonlinear feedback loops involving homeostatic pressure, circadian forcing, mutual inhibition, and neuromodulatory mechanisms. This work presents a nonlinear-dynamical interpretation of sleep with emphasis on bifurcation structure, Lyapunov stability, deterministic intermittency, and hyperchaotic fragmentation. After summarizing representative sleep models and the literature on sleep-stage dynamics, we combine bifurcation and Lyapunov exponent analyses of representative sleep-population models with a four-dimensional model in which cortical activati

The Silk Road Health Project: How Mobility and Migration Status Influence HIV Risks among Male Migrant Workers in Central Asia.

OBJECTIVES: We examined whether mobility, migrant status, and risk environments are associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV risk behaviors (e.g. sex trading, multiple partners, and unprotected sex). METHODS: We used Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) to recruit external male migrant market vendors from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan as well internal migrant and non-migrant market vendors from Kazakhstan. We conducted multivariate logistic regressions to examine the effects of mobility combined with the interaction between mobility and migration status on STIs and

Metabolic profiling of a transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans Alzheimer model.

ABSTRACT: Family firms are one of the most ubiquitous forms of business organizations worldwide. Their survival and growth are thus not only crucial for the firms themselves but also for the overall economy. One of the factors that influence their survival and development are their financing decisions. These decisions are generally described through the pecking order theory. However, not much is known about the applicability of this theory in private family firms. Given the shortcomings (both theoretically and empirically) of the current literature, we analyze 1087 incremental financing decisi

Macroeconomic and monetary policy responses in selected highly indebted MENA countries post Covid 19: A structural VAR approach.

With limited fiscal space, MENA governments with flexible exchange rates have been relying extensively on accommodative monetary policy to circumvent external shocks such as Covid 19 and other domestic macroeconomic imbalances. Other MENA countries with high debt levels and fixed exchange rates are not able to use conventional monetary policy effectively. We use a battery of econometric models to identify domestic and external nominal shocks affecting the MENA region and their dynamic transmission mechanisms through impulse response functions and granger causality tests derived from a structur

Nonfatal agricultural injuries among Colorado older male farmers.

OBJECTIVES: This study described characteristics and potential risk factors for nonfatal agricultural injuries among older male farmers age 60 years and older in Colorado. METHODS: A telephone survey was conducted among 113 older male farmers between 1993 and 1995. Agricultural injuries and potential risk factors were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 27 injuries were sustained. The leading external cause of injuries was livestock, and most of the injuries affected lower and upper extremities of the body. Injured farmers were more likely to be persons who had gone deeply into debt or who were u

Financial assessment and diagnosis of abnormal data of listed companies in public health and wellness industry.

In this study, the present status of the public health and wellness sector in China is examined. The main objective is to evaluate the financial risk among publicly listed companies in the sector. Despite the significant expansion of the industry, research in this domain remains limited. Moreover, it frequently lacks depth, especially when it comes to financial studies designed especially for publicly traded companies. Current models for assessing corporate financial risk are frequently applied in diverse industries without necessary adjustments. Therefore, this study examines the financial pe

The banding phenomenon: injury or hypostasis?

Correct interpretation of autopsy findings related to neck structures can be challenging and has tremendous legal importance. We describe a case of a 30-year-old man who was found dead in a hotel courtyard, facedown. The window of his hotel room on the 5th floor was wide open. Police investigation revealed that he was a gambler with many debts, leading them to suspect foul play. The body was transported for a forensic autopsy in a supine position. External examination showed multiple lacerations and contusions of the face and limbs, without signs of external neck injuries. Layer-by-layer neck

Epidemiological characteristics and early predict model of children Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Pneumonia outbreaks after the COVID-19 in Shandong.

Since October 2023, a significant outbreak of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Pneumonia (MPP) has been observed in children in northern China. Chinese health authorities have attributed this epidemiological to immune debt resulting from the relaxation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) control measures. This study described the epidemiological features of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) prevalence in children and developed a straightforward prediction model to differentiate between MPP and viral pneumonia in children. The infection rate of MP in children notably increased from 8.12 in 2022 to 14.94% in 2
