Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) possesses virulence traits that allow it to invade, colonize, and induce disease in bodily sites outside of the gastrointestinal tract. Human diseases caused by ExPEC include urinary tract infections, neonatal meningitis, sepsis, pneumonia, surgical site infections, as well as infections in other extraintestinal locations. ExPEC-induced diseases represent a large burden in terms of medical costs and productivity losses. In addition to human illnesses, ExPEC strains also cause extraintestinal infections in domestic animals and pets. A commonal

Several potential reservoirs for the Escherichia coli strains that cause most human extraintestinal infections (extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli; ExPEC) have been identified, including the human intestinal tract and various non-human reservoirs, such as companion animals, food animals, retail meat products, sewage, and other environmental sources. Understanding ExPEC reservoirs, chains of transmission, transmission dynamics, and epidemiologic associations will assist greatly in finding ways to reduce the ExPEC-associated disease burden. The need to clarify the ecological behavior of ExPEC is

Pathogenic Escherichia coli strains cause a wide variety of intestinal and extraintestinal infections. The widespread geographical clonal dissemination of intestinal pathogenic E. coli strains, such as E. coli O157:H7, is well recognized, and its spread is most often attributed to contaminated food products. On the other hand, the clonal dissemination of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) strains is also recognized, but the mechanism of their spread is not well explained. Here, I describe major pandemic clonal lineages of ExPEC based on multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and discuss po

Extracellular pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) strains are common causes of a variety of clinical syndromes, including urinary tract infections, abdominal infections, nosocomial pneumonia, neonatal meningitis, and sepsis. ExPEC strains are extracellular bacterial pathogens; therefore, the innate immune response (e.g., professional phagocytes) plays a crucial role in the host defense against them. Studies using the model ExPEC strain CP9 demonstrated that it is relatively resistant to neutrophil-mediated bactericidal activity. Although this could be due to resistance to phagocytosis, the abi

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) strains are responsible for a majority of human extraintestinal infections globally, resulting in enormous direct medical and social costs. ExPEC strains are comprised of many lineages, but only a subset is responsible for the vast majority of infections. Few systematic surveillance systems exist for ExPEC. To address this gap, we systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed 217 studies (1995 to 2018) that performed multilocus sequence typing or whole-genome sequencing to genotype E. coli recovered from extraintestinal infections or the gut. Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC), the specialized strains of E coli that cause most extraintestinal E coli infections, represent a major but little-appreciated health threat. Although the reasons for their evolution remain mysterious, by virtue of their numerous virulence traits ExPEC clearly possess a unique ability to cause disease outside the host intestinal tract. Broader appreciation of the existence and importance of ExPEC and better understandings of their distinctive virulence mechanisms, reservoirs, and transmission pathways may lead to effective preventive interven

The One Health approach emphasizes the importance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a major concern both in public health and in food animal production systems. As a general classification, E. coli can be distinguished based on the ability to cause infection of the gastrointestinal system (IPEC) or outside of it (ExPEC). Among the different pathogens, E. coli are becoming of great importance, and it has been suggested that ExPEC may harbor resistance genes that may be transferred to pathogenic or opportunistic bacteria. ExPEC strains are versatile bacteria that can cause urinary tract, bloo

OBJECTIVE: Extraintestinal Pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), are responsible for host diseases such as Neonatal Meningitis Escherichia coli (NMEC), the second-leading cause of neonatal bacterial meningitis, Avian Pathogenic E. coli (APEC), a cause of extraintestinal disease in poultry, and Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), the most common cause of urinary tract infections. Virulence factors associated with NMEC include outer membrane protein A (OmpA) and type I fimbriae (FimH), which also occur in APEC and UPEC. OmpA contributes to NMEC's ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, persist in the bloodstr

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) are pathogens involved in several disease conditions, ranging from urinary tract infection to meningitis in humans and animals. They comprise epidemiologically and phylogenetically distinct strains, affecting most species and involving any organ or anatomical site. Here, we report fatal cases of necrotizing pneumonia in cats. Over a 1-week period, 13 cats from an animal shelter in Stamford, Connecticut were presented for necropsy. All had a clinical history of acute respiratory disease. The gross and microscopic findings for all the cats were

Multiple-antibiotic-resistant (MAR) extra-intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) represents one of the most frequent causes of human nosocomial and community-acquired infections, whose eradication is of major concern for clinicians. ExPECs may inhabit indefinitely as commensal the gut of humans and other animals; from the intestine, they may move to colonize other tissues, where they are responsible for a number of diseases, including recurrent and uncomplicated UTIs, sepsis and neonatal meningitis. In the pre-antibiotic era, heavy metals were largely used as chemotherapeutics and/or a

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) is an E. coli group, which causes diseases in systems outside human intestinal tract. ExPEC isolates were recovered from fresh chicken (25%) and pork (10%) meats, but not beef and shrimp, from markets in southern Thailand. Among the 14 ExPEC strains isolated, all carried iutA and fimH, coding for aerobactin and type 1 fimbriae, respectively. Two ExPEC strains from chicken meat possessed kpsMTK1 coding for K1 capsular antigen, responsible for neonatal meningitis. Antimicrobial susceptibility assay revealed that all ExPEC were resistant to stre

Escherichia coli represents an incredible versatile and diverse enterobacterial species and can be subdivided into the following; (i) intestinal non-pathogenic, commensal isolates. (ii) Intestinal pathogenic isolates and (iii) extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli or ExPEC isolates. The presence to several putative virulence genes has been positively linked with the pathogenicity of ExPEC. E. coli remains one of the most frequent causes of nosocomial and community-acquired bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, enteric infections, and systemic infections in humans. ExPEC has eme

Extra-intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) is a virulent pathogen found in humans that causes the majority of urinary tract infections, and other infections such as meningitis and sepsis. ExPEC can enter the urinary tract through two modes: ascending from the bladder or descending from the kidneys. Human anatomical structures generally prevent the transmission of pathogens between the extra-intestinal area, kidneys, bladder, and urinary tract. However, adhesins, a virulence protein of ExPEC, promote the initial bacterial attachment and invasion of host cells. In addition to adhesion

BACKGROUND: Classification of pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) has traditionally relied on detecting specific virulence associated genes (VAGs) or combinations thereof. For E. coli isolated from faecal samples, the presence of specific genes associated with different intestinal pathogenic pathovars will determine their classification and further course of action. However, the E. coli genome is not a static entity, and hybrid strains are emerging that cross the pathovar definitions. Hybrid strains may show gene contents previously associated with several distinct pathovars making the corre

Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) are leading causes of adult bacteremia, neonatal meningitis, pneumonia, and the vast majority of urinary tract infections. ExPEC are present in food, mostly in poultry products. Despite the high burden of ExPEC on human health, their source and impact on food safety are largely unknown. Food-isolated ExPEC carry an abundance of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes and are suggested to have zoonotic potential. Here, ExPEC were characterized for sanitizer tolerance, biofilm formation, antibiotic susceptibility, and adherence to Caco-2 cell

Ultraviolet-C light-emitting diode (UVC-LED) and ultrasound (US) are two nonthermal technologies with the potential to destroy pathogens. However, little is known about their effectiveness in strains with a history of heat resistance. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the phenotype and genotype of heat-resistant extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) with heat resistance genes after the application of US, UVC-LED, and UVC-LED+US. For this, two central composite rotatable designs were used to optimize the UVC-LED and US conditions in four ExPEC isolated from beef. From the genome

Antibiograms and relevant genotypes of porcine extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) isolates (n = 315) recovered between 2004 and 2007 in China were assessed. Among the 14 antimicrobials tested, the most prevalent resistance was to ampicillin, trimethoprim, sulfadimidine, tetracycline, neomycin, streptomycin, kanamycin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin (ranging from 81.9 to 100%). Forty-six multiresistant patterns were found. For each antimicrobial agent, ampicillin resistance was primarily mediated by bla(TEM,) streptomycin resistance by strA and strB, kanamycin/neomycin resistance

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) causes a variety of infections outside the gastrointestinal tract. Retail meats are frequently contaminated with E. coli strains, and they might serve as a vehicle for transmitting ExPEC. A total of 1,275 E. coli isolates recovered from ground beef, ground turkey, chicken breasts, and pork chops obtained in Georgia, Maryland, Oregon, and Tennessee in 2006 were investigated for the presence of ExPEC by using multiplex PCR. Identified ExPEC isolates were assigned to serogroups and phylogenetic groups and then analyzed for antimicrobial suscepti

Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) pose a significant threat to human and animal health. However, the diversity and antibiotic resistance of animal ExPEC, and their connection to human infections, remain largely unexplored. The study performs large-scale genome sequencing and antibiotic resistance testing of 499 swine-derived ExPEC isolates from China. Results show swine ExPEC are phylogenetically diverse, with over 80% belonging to phylogroups B1 and A. Importantly, 15 swine ExPEC isolates exhibit genetic relatedness to human-origin E. coli strains. Additionally, 49 strains h
