The exercise and environmental physiology of extravehicular activity.

Extravehicular activity (EVA), i.e., exercise performed under unique environmental conditions, is indispensable for supporting daily living in weightlessness and for further space exploration. From 1965-1996 an average of 20 h x yr(-1) were spent performing EVA. International Space Station (ISS) assembly will require 135 h x yr(-1) of EVA, and 138 h x yr(-1) is planned for post-construction maintenance. The extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), used to protect astronauts during EVA, has a decreased pressure of 4.3 psi that could increase astronauts' risk of decompression sickness (DCS). Exercise

Feasibility of Real-Time Astronaut Eye-Tracking During Analog Extravehicular Activities.

INTRODUCTION: As lunar missions increase in frequency and duration, astronauts will conduct more extravehicular activities (EVAs) under demanding conditions that elevate workload, reduce situational awareness, and heighten the risk of operational errors. Despite extensive use in other high-risk fields, eye-tracking technology has not yet been applied to assess gaze behavior during EVAs. We evaluated the feasibility of using mobile eye-tracking within analog EVA suits, focusing on implementation, data quality, livestreaming capability, and the ability to compare gaze behavior across tasks and s

Reinforcement learning based variable damping control of wearable robotic limbs for maintaining astronaut pose during extravehicular activity.

As astronauts perform on-orbit servicing of extravehicular activity (EVA) without the help of the space station's robotic arms, it will be rather difficult and labor-consuming to maintain the appropriate position in case of impact. In order to solve this problem, we propose the development of a wearable robotic limb system for astronaut assistance and a variable damping control method for maintaining the astronaut's position. The requirements of the astronaut's impact-resisting ability during EVA were analyzed, including the capabilities of deviation resistance, fast return, oscillation resist

Modeling Occupational Fingernail Onycholysis Disorders in the Population of US Astronauts Who Have Engaged in Extravehicular Activity.

OBJECTIVES: Spacesuits are designed to be reliable personal spacecraft that preserve the life and well-being of the astronaut from the extremes of space. However, materials, operating pressures, and suit design requirements often result in a risk of musculoskeletal discomfort and injury to various areas of the body. In particular, this investigation looked at fingernails and their risk of developing onycholysis. METHODS: An onycholysis literature review was followed by a retrospective analysis of injury characteristics, astronaut suited training and spaceflight events, hand anthropometry, glo

Medication use by U.S. crewmembers on the International Space Station.

The environment on the International Space Station (ISS) includes a variety of potential physiologic stressors, including low gravity, elevated exposure to radiation, confined living and working quarters, a heavy workload, and high public visibility. This retrospective study examined medication use during long-duration spaceflights (>30 d). Medication records from 24 crewmembers on 20 missions longer than 30 d over a 10 yr period were examined for trends in usage rates, efficacy, and indication, as well as adverse event quality, frequency, and severity. Results were compared with those from cr

Vibration transmission characteristics of EVA gloves in a zero-gravity, low-pressure environment.

This study proposes a direct measurement method for hand-transmitted vibration in a simulated zero-gravity, low-pressure environment. The study evaluates the vibration reduction effect of extravehicular activity (EVA) gloves and explores their influence on the vibration transmission characteristics of the hand-arm system. Twelve subjects participated in the experiment, simulating astronauts using electric tools to drive screws outside the cabin and measuring vibration exposure at various positions of the human hand-arm system. The results showed that EVA gloves can reduce vibration transmissio

Suited versus unsuited analog astronaut performance using the Aouda.X space suit simulator: the DELTA experiment of MARS2013.

Space suit simulators are used for extravehicular activities (EVAs) during Mars analog missions. Flight planning and EVA productivity require accurate time estimates of activities to be performed with such simulators, such as experiment execution or traverse walking. We present a benchmarking methodology for the Aouda.X space suit simulator of the Austrian Space Forum. By measuring and comparing the times needed to perform a set of 10 test activities with and without Aouda.X, an average time delay was derived in the form of a multiplicative factor. This statistical value (a second-over-second

Decompression Sickness: Current Recommendations.

Decompression sickness (DCS, "bends") is the clinical condition triggered by generation of bubbles in tissues or blood due to supersaturation of inert gas during or after a reduction in ambient pressure. The condition can occur in association with compressed gas diving, compressed air ("caisson") work or rapid decompression to high altitude or reduced cabin pressure such as extravehicular activity (EVA) in space suits. It can also be triggered by mild reduction in ambient pressure such as during commercial aircraft flight after scuba diving. Its manifestations range from joint or muscle pain,

Threshold altitude resulting in decompression sickness.

A review of case reports, hypobaric chamber training data, and experimental evidence indicated that the threshold for incidence of Altitude Decompression Sickness (DCS) was influenced by various factors such as prior denitrogenation, exercise or rest and period of exposure, in addition to individual susceptibility. Fitting these data with appropriate statistical models has the potential for estimating the frequency of occurrence of DCS at various altitudes under different experimental conditions and allows us to examine the influence of various factors on the threshold for DCS. This approach w

Preliminary results of medical research on board the "Mir" orbital complex during its second main mission.

In 1987 the USSR orbital complex "Mir" accomplished its space mission, crewed by Yu.V. Romanenko (326 days), and A.I. Laveykin (about 176 days), who was replaced on the orbit (in consequence of some cardiac function peculiarities revealed in exercise conditions) by A.P. Aleksandrov (about 160 days). During the flight, extravehicular activity in the open space was carried out three times, and conjoint programmes were conducted, over a period of seven days, with an international Soviet-Syrian crew. The most important, fundamental result of the medical studies carried out in this flight seems to

Polyethylenimine/Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite for Lightweight X-Ray Radiation Shielding in Aerospace Applications.

The demand for lightweight, flexible, and lead-free radiation shielding for next-generation extravehicular activity suits and aerospace habitat liners is rapidly intensifying. This study investigates the structural organization and X-ray attenuation performance (10-60 keV) of polyethylenimine/graphene oxide (PEI/GO) composites with GO loadings up to 50 wt%. Microstructural evolution was systematically tracked via optical image quantification (dispersion, connectivity, and local mixing indices) correlated with micro-Raman spectral mapping. Raman analysis confirmed a structural transition at 40

Effects of carbon dioxide on physical and cognitive performance in a simulated spacesuit contingency scenario.

Crewmembers on future Lunar and Mars surface missions will perform numerous surface exploration extravehicular activities (EVAs). NASA standards dictate a nominal upper limit to the inspired partial pressure of CO2 (PICO2) of 15 mmHg in spacesuits; however, there is no suited PICO2 standard for emergency or contingency EVA scenarios. A laboratory-based study was conducted to characterize physical and cognitive performance, and self-reported symptomology during a simulated emergency one-hour EVA return to habitat scenario while being exposed to different PICO2 levels. Fifteen healthy subjects (

Boron nitride nanotube fibers with over 1 GPa strength and 1000 °C stability for exceptional neutron shielding textiles.

Integrating boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) into robust macroscopic architectures for deep space radiation shielding remains a fundamental challenge. Here, we report continuous self-assembled all-nanotube (SAAN) fibers with an 80 wt% BNNT loading, combining tensile strength exceeding 1 GPa with extreme thermal stability from -196 to 1200 °C. These fibers originate from the thermodynamic co-assembly of BNNTs and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a lyotropic liquid crystalline mesophase. This shear-responsive dope enables cooperative reorientation and dense nanotube packing during wet-spinning. When

Motion sickness provoked by torso rotation predicts that caused by head nodding.

INTRODUCTION: Some degree of space motion sickness is experienced by at least 50% of astronauts early in flight. It is unpleasant and could be hazardous during an extravehicular activity or urgent re-entry in the first few days after launch. To date, there is no reliable ground-based test to predict who will be affected. METHODS: Head nodding (HN) in a supine position was used as a model of motion sickness caused by an unusual gravito-inertial environment. Torso rotation (TR) was used as a means of predicting susceptibility to development of symptoms caused by HN. Motion sickness was quantifi

Spaceflight-associated pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Consequences of the expanding commercial spaceflight industry include an increase in total number of spaceflight participants and an accompanying surge in the average number of medical comorbidities compared with government-based astronaut corps. A sequela of these developments is an anticipated rise in acute and chronic pain concerns associated with spaceflight. This review will summarize diagnostic and therapeutic areas of interest that can support the comfort of humans in spaceflight. RECENT FINDINGS: Painful conditions that occur in space may be due to exposure to numer

Expression of hypoxia-inducible genes is suppressed in altered gravity due to impaired nuclear HIF1α accumulation.

Extravehicular activities, the backbone of manned space exploration programs, set astronauts into mild hypoxia. Unfortunately, microgravity aggravates threatening symptoms of hypoxia such as vision impairment and brain edema. Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) sense cellular hypoxia and, subsequently, change the cells' expression profile instantaneously by rapidly translocating-most likely cytoskeleton-dependently-into the nucleus and subsequently forming transcription complexes with other proteins. We tested the hypothesis that this fundamental process could be altered by sudden changes in grav

Uneven terrain affects metabolic cost and gait in simulated complex lunar surfaces.

Objective. Upcoming missions of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Moon will include extensive human exploration of the lunar surface. Walking will be essential for many exploration tasks, and metabolic cost during ambulation on simulated complex lunar surfaces requires further characterization. In this study, ten healthy subjects (6 male and 4 female) participated in three simulated lunar terrain walking conditions at the NASA Johnson Space Center's planetary 'Rock Yard': (1) flat terrain, (2) flat terrain with obstacles, and (3) mixed terrain.Approach.Energy expe

Using 13N2 and PET to track in vivo nitrogen gas kinetics during normobaric conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Decompression sickness (DCS) during extravehicular activity in space or after diving is caused by gaseous nitrogen. The pathophysiology is still not fully understood, as mechanisms of dissolved gas uptake and bubble development are challenging to study. We aimed to develop a new method using nitrogen-13 (13N2) gas in vivo using positron emission tomography (PET) under normobaric pressure. METHODS: A single anesthetized and ventilated Sprague Dawley rat lay supine inside a PET scanner for 30 min. The rat breathed oxygen for the first 2 min, then 13N2 gas mixed with oxygen for 20
