Adaptation mechanisms of ANAMMOX bacteria to extreme environments.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) bacteria (AnAOB) play a vital role in the global nitrogen cycle and have emerged as a promising alternative for sustainable nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. They directly convert ammonium and nitrite into dinitrogen gas under anaerobic conditions, without the need for high energy and external carbon associated with conventional nitrification-denitrification. With increasing global demands to mitigate nutrient pollution and improve water quality, a deeper understanding of AnAOB has become both scientifically significant and practically necessary.

Gradient nanofiber aerogels for extreme cryogenic and thermal environments.

Striking a balance between sensitivity and detection range while ensuring stability under extreme temperatures remains a formidable challenge in the design of flexible pressure sensors. To address this issue, we draw inspiration from the multi-gradient architectures of nature and propose a bottom-up self-assembly strategy. By leveraging a meticulously orchestrated multi-step approach that encompasses electrospinning, sequential freezing, and thermal imidization, we successfully fabricate a polyimide nanofiber/carbon nanotube dual-gradient aerogel with a dynamic stiffness transition from flexib

Additive Manufacturing of High-Performance Polymers for Extreme Environments.

Additive manufacturing (AM) of high-performance polymers (HPPs) has gained significant research interest due to its potential for applications in extreme environments, including aerospace, automotive, marine, and defense sectors. Components in these applications are often subjected to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, high mechanical loads, and chemically aggressive environments. HPPs are well-suited to such demanding conditions because of their high mechanical properties, thermal stability, flame resistance, and chemical durability. However, the inherent molecular and structural charac

Adaptive mechanisms of Bacillus to near space extreme environments.

Earth's near space is an extreme atmosphere environment with high levels of radiation, low atmospheric pressure and dramatic temperature fluctuations. The region is above the flight altitude of aircraft but below the orbit of satellites, which has special and Mars-like conditions for investigating the survival and evolution of life. Technical limitations including flight devices, payloads and technologies/methodologies hinder microbiological research in near space. In this study, we investigated microbial survival and adaptive strategies in near space using a scientific balloon fight mission a

Pervasiveness of UVC254-resistant Geobacillus strains in extreme environments.

We have characterized a broad collection of extremophilic bacterial isolates from a deep subsurface mine, compost dumping sites, and several hot spring ecosystems. Spore-forming strains isolated from these environments comprised both obligate thermophiles/thermotolerant species (growing at > 55 °C; 240 strains) and mesophiles (growing at 15 to 40 °C; 12 strains). An overwhelming abundance of Geobacillus (81.3%) and Bacillus (18.3%) species was observed among the tested isolates. 16S rRNA sequence analysis documented the presence of 24 species among these isolates, but the 16S rRNA gene was sho

Adaptation and failure of adaptation to extreme natural environments.

Although the environmental stresses to which man is subjected on the ground are less than those commonly encountered in aviation or under water, they may still exceed an individual's powers of adaptation. Extremes of temperature, commonly encountered in the Arctic or the tropics, may occur in regions of normally temperate climate and lead to failure of temperature regulation, resulting in hypothermia, frostbite, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke. High mountains impose additional hazards due to high winds and lack of oxygen, and deep mines are dangerous work-places because of high temperature and

Frontal curing of aluminosilicate-epoxy composites for extreme underwater environments.

Rapid underwater repair using durable materials capable of withstanding extreme cold and saline marine conditions remains a significant unresolved challenge with broad implications for the maintenance and restoration of marine infrastructure. In this work, we developed a new class of functional materials, aluminosilicate-epoxy composites with self-initiated, frontal curing and seawater resistance, to address this challenge. A catalyzed stoichiometric frontal polymerization strategy was employed to overcome the fundamental chemical incompatibility between the frontal curing of epoxy and the alk

Radiative Thermal Management for Extreme Environments: Mechanisms and Design Strategies.

The energy-intensive and environmentally unsustainable nature of conventional air-conditioning systems, combined with the accelerating impacts of climate change, has underscored an urgent need for environmentally friendly and durable thermal regulation technologies. In response, radiative thermal management technologies, including radiative cooling and solar heating, have emerged as promising passive approaches. However, conventional standalone radiative thermal management systems often exhibit performance limitations under extreme thermal conditions and diverse environmental stressors, highli

Adaptation to extreme environments: A review of Antarctic fish physiology.

Having evolved in the chronically cold and thermally stable waters of the Southern Ocean (SO) for millions of years, Antarctic fish possess a suite of physiological specializations that enable them to survive at temperatures near the freezing point of seawater. Adaptations include the evolution of antifreeze proteins, modifications of membrane composition, altered metabolic processes, unique mechanisms of oxygen transport and utilization, and distinctive cellular stress responses. This review synthesizes current knowledge of the physiological adaptations of Antarctic fish, focusing on the mech

Homeocurvature: A new dimension of membrane adaptation to extreme environments.

Adaptation to abiotic factors is essential for life's radiation across the planet. Lipids, particularly sensitive to pressure and temperature (P and T), play a critical role in biochemical adaptation. In oceanic depths, lower temperatures and increasing hydrostatic pressure influence lipid packing. The prevailing model for lipid response to P and T has been homeoviscosity, regulating membrane viscosity. However, our recent systematic analysis of lipid adaptation in ctenophores revealed an alternative homeocurvature model influenced by the spontaneous curvature of phospholipids. This model high

Research on Haenyeo: Insights Into Human Adaptations to Extreme Environments.

Haenyeo, Korea's traditional female breath-hold divers, represent a unique model for studying brain adaptation to extreme environmental stressors. Diving daily without breathing equipment, they endure hypoxia, hydrostatic pressure, and cold exposure, often well into their senior years. Research on haenyeo has broader implications for fields such as aging research, space exploration, and underwater medicine. Haenyeo provide an extraordinary lens through which to explore human brain resilience and adaptability. Their experiences demonstrate the brain's capacity for enduring and adapting to extre

Boundaries of photosynthesis: adaptations of carbon fixation in extreme environments.

Extreme environments challenge fundamental pillars of photosynthesis: light capture and carbon fixation. Organisms thriving in extreme conditions, such as high and low temperatures, extreme pH levels, and high salinity, have evolved remarkable adaptive mechanisms allowing them to sustain photosynthesis. Research into these adaptations has expanded our understanding of the limits and evolution of photosynthesis, while also providing promising biotechnological applications. In this review, we explore the adaptations that tolerant and extremophilic photosynthetic organisms have evolved, overcomin

Microbiologically influenced corrosion in extreme environments caused by problematic microbial biofilms.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) caused by microbial biofilms poses significant challenges to industrial systems. MIC and MIC mitigation cost billions of dollars each year in the US alone. Although most microbes flourish under mild conditions, increasing evidence demonstrates that in extreme environments such as high temperature, pressure, salinity, and low pH, extremophiles including thermophiles, barophiles, halophiles, and acidophiles can still form resilient biofilms and contribute to corrosion and biofouling. This review summarizes recent advances in understanding the formatio

Protein Intrinsic Disorder and Adaptation to Extreme Environments: Resilience of Chaos.

Extremophiles are organisms adapted not only to survive in harsh conditions but thrive in environments considered extreme or uninhabitable by most life forms. They serve as a living reflection of a popular motto "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and show that life on Earth is spread well outside the human-centric comfort zone. In fact, extremophiles, being found in deep crustal and oceanic depths, outer space, highly acidic and basic conditions, extreme temperatures (+122 °C to -20 °C), and in the presence of toxins and high radiation, demonstrate life's remarkable adaptability. Double-Sided Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Materials under Human-Centric Extreme Environments.

Maintaining the adhesion strength of flexible pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) is crucial for advanced applications, such as health monitoring. Sustainable mounting is critical for wearable sensor devices, especially under challenging surroundings such as low and high temperatures (e.g., polar regions or deserts), underwater and sweat environments (physical activity), and cyclical shear complex stresses. In this article, we consider the adhesive, mechanical, and optical properties of medical-grade double-sided PSAs by simulating extreme human-centric environments. Diverse temperature condit

Converging indicators for assessing individual differences in adaptation to extreme environments.

It is well known that microgravity results in various physiological alterations, for example, head-ward fluid shifts which can impede physiological adaptation. Other factors that may affect crew operational efficiency include disruption of sleep-wake cycles, high workload, isolation, confinement, stress, and fatigue. From an operational perspective, it is difficult to predict which individuals will be most or least affected in this unique environment given that most astronauts are first-time flyers. During future lunar and Mars missions space crews will include both men and women of multi-nati
