[Diagnosis and therapy of acute bacterial infections of the eye].

New knowledge in the understanding of infection immunology and the development of more effective antibiotics will influence the therapeutic options for extra- and intraocular bacterial diseases. The role of mucin with its high sIgA content, the glycoconjugate-mediated bacterial adherence phenomena of the cornea and conjunctiva, and the exact biomicroscopic classification can be constrated with the highly effective topically and systemically applicable antibiotics (e.g., Cephalosporins, Aminoglycosides, New Quinolones and Carbapenems). Acute bacterial infections of the eye: their aetiology and treatment.

The aerobic microbial flora of 823 eyes with acute bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration, dacryocystitis, discharging sockets, blepharitis, and postoperative infections has been investigated. Staphylococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and nonfermenting Gram-negative bacilli including Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the main pathogens. Fermenting coliforms were also infrequently isolated. The least overall resistance of 30.9% was to chloramphenicol, but no one antibiotic was effective against all pathogens. Cloxacillin is the best drug for staphylococcal and polymyxin B for pseudomonas infecti

The potential of phage therapy in bacterial infections of the eye.

Antibiotic resistance has become a major health challenge which poses a significant threat, also in ophthalmology. For example, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus may cause dramatic complications, including bilateral blindness as a consequence of orbital cellulitis and panophthalmitis. This menace has provoked a greatly revived interest in phage therapy. In recent years, a number of papers have been published suggesting its efficacy in animal and human bacterial infections, but none of them addressed the phage potential in ophthalmology, which is the subject of this mini review.

Comparison Between Moxifloxacin and Chloramphenicol for the Treatment of Bacterial Eye Infections.

BACKGROUND: Moxifloxacin is a bactericidal methoxyquinolone used for the treatment of conjunctivitis and prophylactic therapy in cataract and refractive surgeries. Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic organochlorine introduced into clinical practice in 1948 and used mainly in topical preparations because of its known toxicity. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial effect and the ocular cytotoxicity of these broad-spectrum antibiotics. METHODS: Antimicrobic activity was tested on 4 bacteria strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, a

A cluster of deep bacterial infections following eye surgery associated with construction dust.

Three cases of serious eye infection (two endophthalmitis, one orbital cellulitis; two caused by Staphylococcus aureus, one caused by viridans streptococci) occurred shortly after surgery (two cataracts, one retinal detachment repair) within two weeks. There had been construction work adjacent to the theatres during this time, and fine dust was found on horizontal surfaces. Further surgery was cancelled, the construction work was completed and theatres were cleaned before recommencing with no further infections. Following a review of factors that may be involved in the pathogenesis of endophth

Prevalence of bacterial eye infections and multidrug resistance patterns among eye infection suspected patients in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial eye infections are major global health issue in developing countries like Ethiopia, poor hygiene, limited healthcare infrastructure, and inadequate treatment options contribute to the increased burden of these infections, leading to significant ocular morbidity and potential blindness. Major bacterial pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are responsible for these infections. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to synthesize existing literature on the prevalence of

Topical antibiotic therapy in eye infections - myths and certainties in the era of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Globally, the alarming increase in the rate of antibiotic (AB) resistance of bacteria is currently considered one of the 7 major threats to the human race along with terrorism, nuclear proliferation and pollution. Judicious use of AB by physicians in all medical and surgical specialties is essential to limit the extent of resistance to AB. In Europe, Romania ranks among the first in terms of the rate of resistance to AB of the main bacteria involved in eye infections (EI). The principles of a judicious antibiotic therapy in ophthalmology are: performing the bacteriological determinations neces
