Fungal eye infections are rare. Trauma associated with contamination by vegetative material, contact lens wear and long term corticosteroid use are common risk factors. The aims of treatment are to preserve visual function, which depends on the rapid diagnosis and efficient administration of appropriate antifungal therapy. This necessitates a clinical suspicion of fungal aetiology and the taking of appropriate smears and cultures as early as possible to identify the fungal organism. Currently there are three main classes of drugs available for use in fungal eye infections: polyenes, azoles as

Infections of the eye give rise to severe ocular morbidity and blindness include keratitis, orbital cellulites, endophthalmitis and dacryocystitis. Corneal blindness, in developing countries is predominantly associated with infections. In India, nearly 30-35% of all culture positive infectious keratitis are caused fungi. Laboratory diagnosis mainly depends upon proper collection and transport of clinical specimens. In fungal keratitis, corneal scraping is the ideal sample, but occasionally corneal biopsy or anterior chamber aspirate may also be needed. Corneal scraping is usually by Kimura spa

Although relatively uncommon, fungi, atypical Mycobacteria, and Nocardia have been isolated from a variety of infections of eye including keratitis, scleritis, canaliculitis, dacryocystitis, endophthalmitis and orbital cellulites. The organisms typically cause a slowly progressive disease. The diseases caused by the organisms can pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. In this manuscript we will describe updates on important aspects of the ocular infections caused by these organisms.

In this report, we describe the case of a young, diabetic girl with ketoacidosis who suffered sudden loss of vision of the right eye. The loss of vision was caused by an invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral fungal infection (mucormycosis) with extensive periorbital thrombosis. Despite maximal antifungal and surgical treatment (including exenteration of the right orbit), the clinical situation deteriorated. It was only after overcoming the difficulties of managing her hyperglycaemia that the patient's condition stabilised and her life was saved. Another factor contributing to this girls' survival wa

Colletotrichum is a relatively uncommon cause of human infection. Previous findings on Colletotrichum keratitis were scarce, and most diagnoses were based on morphological distinction, perhaps underestimating the incidence of Colletotrichum species. This research describes the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of 9 cases of Colletotrichum keratitis discovered in our hospital using next-generation sequencing (NGS).We reviewed 78 patients with NGS-proven fungal keratitis between September 1, 2021 and May 31, 2023, 9 patients (11.5 %) were verified as infected with Colletotrichum sp

METHOD: Medical Records of cases with orbital fungal infection from January 2000 to December 2019 were reviewed.
RESULTS: The study included 45 patients. Mucormycosis was proven in 32 (71.1%) and aspergillosis in 13 (28.9%) patients. Thirty-five (77.8%) patients had predisposing factors mainly uncontrolled diabetes. Twenty-seven (60%) patients presented with orbital apex syndrome, 10 (22.2%) with orbital cellulitis and 8 (17.7%) with proptosis. The prognosis was generally poor (31.1% mortality, 8.88% exenteration and 11.1% self-evisceration). The proposed algorithm composed of six atypical cl

PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence of fungal infections after corneal transplantation to determine whether storage media supplementation with an antifungal should be considered.
METHODS: Adverse reactions reported to the Eye Bank Association of America through the online adverse reaction reporting system between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2010, were reviewed to identify cases of recipient fungal infection. Data were collected regarding the donor, the donor cornea, recovery and processing, and mate culture and clinical course of the recipients.
RESULTS: Thirty-one cases of culture-p

During the last two decades, the occurrence of fungal infections either superficial or systemic has been increasing. Moreover, fungal infections become more difficult to treat when they show coupling with immunogenic diseases like AIDS. Superficial fungal infections are associated with skin, nail and eye and are less prominent to systemic infection. However, it may be dangerous if not treated properly. It is usually observed that conventional formulations including cream, powder, gels etc. are used to treat skin fungal infections even for the deep seated fungal infections. However, these formu

PURPOSE: We studied retrospectively the background of postoperative infection after corneal transplantation.
METHODS: We reviewed the records of 753 eyes that had undergone corneal transplantation at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine or the Baptist Eye Clinic over a period of 6 years from April 1994 to March 2000. Patients who developed microbial keratitis after corneal transplantation were evaluated for the incidence of infection, age, the interval between transplantation and infection, microbiological etiology, the use of topical steroids, therapy, and complications.

Mycotic lacrimal canaliculitis is a rare eye disease. Overuse of antibiotics and steroids in the treatment of eye infections is a very serious risk factor. Initial diagnosis of the mycotic infection may be difficult, thus infection may lasts for months. Chronic conjunctivitis, itching, burning sensations, poor response to the treatment may suggest a suspicion of the mycosis. In our paper we report two cases of the mycotic lacrimal canaliculitis, diagnosis and treatment. We could not culture fungal colonies, but we have found fungal structures in direct microscopic detection during the examinat

Fungal infections of the orbit represent a small minority of orbital infections. However, due to the virulent nature of some of the fungal species, they can have a devastating effect on ocular functions. Most of these fungi are saprophytes, which cause opportunistic infections. Aspergillus is one such fungus that can cause infection at various sites in an immunosuppressed individual. Sinonasal aspergillus infection with orbital extension and orbital aspergillus infection progress relentlessly. They can have a precipitous clinical course resulting in total loss of vision. Oculomycosis may be divided into the orbital infections of phycomycosis of Aspergillus and other species and the infections of the globe. The latter comprise endogenous, post-surgical or traumatic intra-ocular infections and direct infections of the cornea: these are the commonest form of oculomycosis. They are not easy to differentiate from other, more common causes of septic infection of the eye. The early recognition of fungal infections of the eye thus rests on maintaining an efficient service for all septic infections of the eye. Candida albicans and other dimorphic fungal infections are

Fungal infections of the eye are an important cause of significant visual loss and blindness in some regions of the world, especially developing countries. Ocular mycoses remain a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the ophthalmologist. Corneal infection is the most frequent presentation, but the orbit, eyelids, lacrimal apparatus, conjunctiva, sclera and internal structures of the eye can also be affected. Candida spp., Fusarium spp. and Aspergillus spp. are the most frequently isolated organisms in fungal keratitis and in endophthalmitis. The difficulties posed by ocular mycoses are main

The most prevalent conditions among ocular surgery and COVID-19 patients are fungal eye infections, which may cause inflammation and dry eye, and may cause ocular morbidity. Amphotericin-B eye drops are commonly used in the treatment of ocular fungal infections. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and is used for the treatment of dry eye, conjunctivitis, and ocular inflammation. However, poor aqueous stability and excessive nasolacrimal duct draining impede these agens' efficiency. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Amphoterici

INTRODUCTION: Ophthalmological conditions in international travelers may be associated with low mortality but high morbidity. Eye involvement in travelers is less frequently reported than febrile, gastrointestinal and respiratory infections, but data probably represent a degree of under-notification.
METHODS: an extensive narrative review of the main viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections affecting the eye in travelers was performed.
MAIN FINDINGS: Common respiratory tract viral infections may cause ocular complications in travelers, human influenza viruses have been associated wi
