The role of parasitic infection in the aetiology of phlyctenular eye disease.

Stool and urine analysis of 150 cases of phlyctenular eye disease, revealed that 115 (76.67%) were positive for intestinal parasites. The most prevalent parasites were Hymenolepis nana (49.56%) followed by Ascaris lumbricoides (27.82%). Eosinophilia (5-10%) was detected in 90 phlycten cases (60%), 80 of them (88.8%) had parasitic infection. Since H. nana can produce a type of tissue hypersensitivity, phlyctenular eye disease may be partly referred to such an infection.

Beyond the clinical eye: mapping intestinal parasitic infections and its risk factors among dogs and cats across Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections in dogs and cats represent a significant clinical challenge and pose relevant zoonotic risks to public health. Epidemiological data on Portuguese companion animals remain scarce, with limited sample sizes and geographic coverage, leaving key gaps in understanding parasite prevalence and associated risk factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional epidemiological study investigated the prevalence and associated risk factors of intestinal parasitism in 363 dogs and 345 cats, sampled from companion, breeding, shelter, and stray populations between November 2

Within-Host "Infraecology": Asymmetric Interactions Between Two Co-infecting Eye Parasites.

Parasites within the host body can occupy similar ecological niches and, therefore, compete for resources. Similarly to macroecological environments, within-host habitats often provide unequal access to resources for different parasitic species. Parasites that live closer to the source of nutrients likely "intercept" resources, thus inhibiting the growth of "downstream" competitors. The eyes of vertebrates are an example of such asymmetric habitats, as lenses have priority access to nutrients over the vitreous humor. However, parasitic interactions in asymmetric environments have been rarely p

Parasite spillover rather than niche expansion explains infection of host brain by diplostomid eye flukes.

Parasites often occupy specific sites within their host, which has important implications for host performance and parasite transmission. Nonetheless, parasitic infections can occur beyond their typical location within a host, significantly altering host-parasite interactions. Yet, the causes behind the atypical tissue tropism are poorly understood. Here, we focus on a ubiquitous group of diplostomid parasites that form diverse communities in fish eyes. We used targeted DNA metabarcoding (cytochrome c oxydase subunit 1, COX1, 250 bp) to evaluate potential mechanisms underlying eye parasite aty

Ocular infections in international travelers.

INTRODUCTION: Ophthalmological conditions in international travelers may be associated with low mortality but high morbidity. Eye involvement in travelers is less frequently reported than febrile, gastrointestinal and respiratory infections, but data probably represent a degree of under-notification. METHODS: an extensive narrative review of the main viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections affecting the eye in travelers was performed. MAIN FINDINGS: Common respiratory tract viral infections may cause ocular complications in travelers, human influenza viruses have been associated wi

Sitting at the window to the world--ocular parasites.

Parasitic infections cause significant ophthalmic disease, both in developing countries and in the Western world. The parasitic infections Acanthamoeba keratitis, ocular toxoplasmosis, and ocular toxocariasis are responsible for a significant proportion of ocular pathology. Especially in light of the recent increase of immunocompromised (i.e. using immunosuppressants or HIV) and aged populations, parasitic infections of the eye are rising in number. This reviews aims to describe the pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnosis and management of infection, as well as preventative measures for these three

Globalisation and Ocular Parasitic Infections: A Review of Recent Studies.

Ocular parasitic infections, which lead to significant morbidity and mortality in particular areas, have been shifting from endemic areas to other regions due to tourism, wars and migrations in recent years. This study aimed to review the parasitic factors related to the human eye and their geographical distribution, pathogenesis of the disease and the methods used in and studies conducted for its diagnosis. PubMed, MEDLINE and Google databases were researched and reviewed for relevant keywords in recent publications. Although such parasitic infections are rare in many parts of the world, they

Ocular manifestations of systemic infection.

Increased research and awareness of various systemic infections places a greater emphasis on the ophthalmologist's knowledge of ocular manifestations of these diseases. New advances in the diagnosis and treatment, as well as studies of the pathogenesis and histological features of different infectious processes are continually being reported. Recent publications focusing on ophthalmic findings of infectious diseases are reviewed. This article discusses new reports on herpes simplex, herpes zoster, Lyme disease, malaria, onchocerciasis, cysticercosis, and toxocariasis.

Cutaneous larva migrans, sacroileitis, and optic neuritis caused by an unidentified organism acquired in Thailand.

We report the case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman with an unidentified intraocular parasite. The parasite, which had been acquired in Thailand, caused cutaneous larva migrans, sacroileitis, and 2 years later optic neuritis and panuveitis. The patient was successfully treated with ivermectin and albendazole. The diagnostic possibilities of this peculiar presentation are discussed. Parasitic infections are a leading cause of medical problems in travelers to tropical countries.1 While most parasites cause gastrointestinal problems, some may migrate throughout the body and lodge in critical organ

High Parasitic Infections in the Laboratory Animals: Complications for the Research Outcomes and Zoonotic Importance.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory animals are widely used for medical research; hence, their health status is a determinant of the outcome and success of the research. We aimed to investigate the possible infection of rodents with intestinal parasites in the Hamadan University of Medical Sciences animal house. METHODS: From October to November 2022, one hundred and twenty healthy laboratory rodents including 60 Wistar rats, 30 BALB/c mice, and 30 NMRI mice were randomly collected and examined for parasitic infections. The digestive tracts were removed and examined for infection by helminths and parasiti

[Transmission of conventional agents during outpatient care].

Outpatient care bring together in a single location a large number of patients potentially bearing conventional infectious agents (virus, bacteria, fungi, parasites). This report details the germs potentially involved. We emphasize adenovirus epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, which is particularly prevalent in ophthalmology outpatient care. We analyze the modes of contamination and the means to prevent iatrogenic infections.

Nematode infections of the eye: toxocariasis and diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis.

In many parts of the world, parasitic infections of the eye are a major cause of blindness. The parasites Toxocara canis, Onchocerca volvulus, Taenia solium, Ancylostoma caninum, and Cysticercus celulosae all have been responsible for blinding ocular infections. The nematodes T. canis and Toxocara cati are parasitic roundworms that infect dogs (toxocarosis), other canidae, and cats. Ocular toxocariasis is an uncommon worldwide infection caused by the nematode larvae of T. canis, commonly found in dogs. Human transmission is usually via geophagia, the ingestion of food contaminated with Toxocar

Human immunodeficiency virus and opportunistic ocular infections.

Opportunistic ocular infections are a common and important complication of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Cytomegalovirus retinitis is by far the most frequent infection, but other viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections of the posterior segment of the eye may be seen. Infections of the anterior segment are less common but may cause visual loss if not treated. Prompt recognition of these diseases is essential because ocular involvement may be an early sign of systemic dissemination.

Intraocular live cysticercus larva.

Ocular cysticercosis is one of the most common parasitic infections of the eye in humans. Although the adult pork tapeworm, Taenia solium, resides in the lumen of the intestine, the only structural element of an adult worm is usually found within a tissue cyst in the eye, its adenexa, or other places in the body with a single invaginated scolex. An unusual case is described in which a 13- to 14-mm live cysticercus larva was found, removed from the eye, and confirmed by histopathologic examination.

Subretinal parasitic lesion mimicking viral retinitis managed with combined medical therapy and laser photocoagulation.

Parasitic infections can present with variable manifestations and may mimic viral retinitis, particularly when intraocular inflammation is prominent. We report a case of a 54-year-old woman experiencing worsening blurred vision in her right eye for over a month. She was previously diagnosed with acute retinal necrosis and treated with corticosteroids and acyclovir, but her condition continued to decline. Fundus examination showed dense vitritis and an ill-defined area of retinitis along the superior temporal arcade. Serologic tests were positive for Toxocara IgG and Toxoplasma gondii IgG, whil

Toxocarosis, toxoplasmosis and ocular dirofilariasis diagnosed in a polish farmer from Wielkopolska Voivodeship - a case description.

INTRODUCTION: Zoonotic diseases caused by different parasites are recently more frequently diagnosed in humans. Contact with domestic animals, mainly dogs and cats increases a risk for the infection. Toxocarosis and dirofilariasis have worldwide distribution. Parasitic infections in humans are diagnosed incidentally because health care providers has a little knowledge about them. In this manuscript we described a case of a polish farmer with visual problems who was diagnosed multiple parasitic coinfection cased by Dirofilaria, Toxocara sp. and Toxoplasma gondii. Update on pathology of ocular parasitic disease.

Parasites are a group of eukaryotic organisms that may be free-living or form a symbiotic or parasitic relationship with the hosts. Consisting of over 800,000 recognized species, parasites may be unicellular (Protozoa) or multicellular (helminths and arthropods). The association of parasites with human population started long before the emergence of civilization. Parasitic zoonotic diseases are prevalent worldwide including India. Appropriate epidemiological data are lacking on existing zoonotic parasitic diseases, and newer diseases are emerging in our scenario. Systemic diseases such as cyst
