Spatial and temporal measurements of eye movement in children with dyslexia.

This paper presents the first reading data in Croatian collected with an eye-tracking device. The eye-tracking method allows for research into two crucial levels underlying reading: the visual and the cognitive. The aim of this paper is to show the differences in eye movements in children with dyslexia using the principles of cognitive-control view. Despite the well-known definitions and vast literature on dyslexia, the neural basis of dyslexia varies greatly on the individual level. The three children studied in this paper were tested behaviorally using set of language tests for language beha

Quantitative measurements of eye movements in a patient with Tullio phenomenon.

The Tullio phenomenon consists of vestibular symptoms on exposure to high-intensity acoustic stimuli, reflecting pathological stimulation of semicircular canals or otoliths. We report a patient with posttraumatic Tullio phenomenon to illustrate how precise measurement of eye movements during auditory stimulation, using the magnetic search coil technique, may characterize movements that are not clinically apparent or easily measured by other means. Such measurements in patients with surgically verified lesions may further elucidate the mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon.

Advancements in eye movement measurement technologies for assessing neurodegenerative diseases.

Eye movements have long been recognized as a valuable indicator of neurological conditions, given the intricate involvement of multiple neurological pathways in vision-related processes, including motor and cognitive functions, manifesting in rapid response times. Eye movement abnormalities can indicate neurological condition severity and, in some cases, distinguish between disease phenotypes. With recent strides in imaging sensors and computational power, particularly in machine learning and artificial intelligence, there has been a notable surge in the development of technologies facilitatin

Covering one eye in fixation-disparity measurement causes slight movement of fellow eye.

In the subjective measurement of fixation disparity (FD), the subject fuses contours presented in the peripheral macular areas of both eyes (fusion lock). The position of the eyes relative to each other is monitored by means of two haploscopically seen vertical lines presented in the central macular area, one above and one below a binocularly seen horizontal line. The subject is instructed to shift one of the vertical lines horizontally until the two are aligned, while fixating their intersection with the horizontal line. It has recently been questioned whether the foveolae really are pointed

Repeatability, reliability, and stability of eye movement measurements in Parkinson's disease, cerebellar ataxia, and healthy adults.

INTRODUCTION: Eye movements have been proposed as biomarkers to track disease progression and treatment effects in neurological diseases. Before such variables are used in the clinic or in drug trials, properties such as measurement error must be documented. In this study, we assessed repeatability, reliability, and stability of fixation, smooth pursuit, and saccade measurements in patients with Parkinson's disease, cerebellar ataxia, and healthy adults. METHODS: Fixation, smooth pursuit, and saccade metrics were measured in 16 patients with Parkinson's disease, 16 patients with ataxia, and 2

Measuring the dynamics of attentional capture in hand and eye movements with virtual reality.

Laboratory investigations of attentional capture typically use two-dimensional displays and button-press responses, which may limit their generalizability to everyday experiences. The current study used a virtual reality (VR) system to measure the dynamics of attentional capture by simultaneously recording participants' (N = 54) hand and eye movements as they completed a modified additional singleton task. In both a sparsely detailed and richly detailed virtual environment, participants reached to select a uniquely shaped target that was accompanied by a uniquely colored distractor on 50% of t

Eye Movements during Measurements of Visual Vertical in the Poststroke Subacute Phase.

The subjective visual vertical (VV), the visually estimated direction of gravity, is essential for assessing vestibular function and visuospatial cognition. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying altered VV perception in stroke participants with unilateral spatial neglect (USN), specifically by examining their eye movement patterns during VV judgment tasks. Participants with USN demonstrated limited eye movement scanning along a rotating bar, often fixating on prominent ends, such as the top or bottom. This suggests a reflexive response to visually salient areas, pote

Balance Markers and Saccadic Eye-Movement Measures in Adolescents With Postconcussion Syndrome.

CONTEXT: Deficits in both balance and oculomotor function, including impairments in saccadic eye movements, are observed in approximately 30% of patients postconcussion. Whereas balance and saccadic eye movements are routinely assessed separately, growing evidence suggests that they should be assessed concurrently. OBJECTIVE: To compare balance measures and saccades between adolescents 1 to 3 months postconcussion and healthy uninjured adolescents. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Concussion clinic and 2 private schools. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-five adolescents (10 boys,

Saccade eye movements as a quantitative measure of frontostriatal network in children with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of poor inhibition in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) comes primarily from neuropsychological tasks and neuroimaging studies, many of which have revealed structural/functional abnormalities of the frontostriatal network with opposing functions of disinhibition and inhibition. Studies of saccades have therefore contributed to the understanding of the pathophysiological basis of ADHD. OBJECT: To investigate the development of reflexive/voluntary control of saccades in normal children, compare saccade parameters between ADHD and control groups, and clarify dy

TREYESCAN: configuration of an eye tracking test for the measurement of compensatory eye movements in patients with visual field defects.

The Traffic Eye Scanning and Compensation Analyzer (TREYESCAN) is introduced as an innovative eye tracking test designed to measure compensatory eye movements in individuals with visual field defects. The primary objective of the test is to quantitatively assess and analyze the compensatory eye movements employed by patients with visual field defects while viewing videos of various traffic scenes from the viewpoint of a driver of a passenger car. The filming process involved capturing a wide range of driving conditions and hazards, aiming to replicate real-world scenarios. Specific dynamic are

Effect of fixational eye movements in corneal topography measurements with optical coherence tomography.

Leukemia cells reciprocally interact with their surrounding bone marrow microenvironment (BMM), rendering it hospitable to leukemia cell survival, for instance through the release of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs). In contrast, we show here that BMM deficiency of pleckstrin homology domain family M member 1 (PLEKHM1), which serves as a hub between fusion and secretion of intracellular vesicles and is important for vesicular secretion in osteoclasts, accelerates murine BCR-ABL1+ B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) via regulation of the cargo of sEVs released by BMM-derived mesenchy

High-accuracy measurement of rotational eye movement by tracking of blood vessel images.

This study focuses on a technique for measuring the angle of rotational eye movement by tracking the conjunctival blood vessel ends of sclera, instead of grayscale iris patterns used in the existing techniques. It is because the blood vessel images of sclera have high grayscale contrasts. This technique especially recognizes the contour of the iris to detect the target conjunctival blood vessel end and use the degree of similarity by means of template matching to select automatically the blood vessel end to be tracked. The search region is limited by template matching to achieve low processing

Saccadic eye movement analysis as a measure of drug effects on human psychomotor performance.

Analysis of human horizontal saccadic eye movements can provide measurements of central nervous system depression and stimulation. Effects on saccadic eye movements have been observed in normal volunteers with barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opiates and related compounds, carbamazepine, amphetamine and ethanol. A suite of programmes have been developed to allow the generation, collection and analysis of saccadic eye movements using a CBM 3032, 8032 or BBC B microcomputer. The system allows almost continuous sampling and rapid analysis of movements.

Development and validation of a high-speed video system for measuring saccadic eye movement.

Laboratory-based retroreflective and magnetic scleral search-coil technologies are the current standards for collecting saccadometric data, but such equipment is costly and cumbersome. We have validated a novel, portable, high-speed video camera-based system (Exilim EX-FH20, Casio, Tokyo, Japan) for measuring saccade reaction time (RT) and error rate in a well-lit environment. This system would enable measurements of pro- and antisaccades in athletes, which is important because antisaccade metrics provide a valid tool for concussion diagnosis and determining an athlete's safe return to play. Interrelations between measures of visual acuity and parameters of eye movement in congenital nystagmus.

The authors assessed relationships between visual acuity and the amplitude, frequency, intensity, and duration of foveation periods in a retrospective study of 32 patients. Twenty-four patients had congenital idiopathic nystagmus, and eight patients had nystagmus and albinism. Visual acuity was determined for Landolt ring optotypes and, as the extrapolated high-frequency cutoff of the contrast sensitivity function, for horizontal and vertical gratings. No significant correlation existed between acuity and any measured eye movement parameter; however, optotype acuity was related to the magnitud

Saccadic eye movements as a measure of residual effects: temazepam compared with other hypnotics.

Eye movements are classified into two categories: quickly running saccades and smooth pursuit movements. Saccades are fast conjugate eye movements with a preprogrammed direction, amplitude, and speed course; their purpose is to register new objects in the visual field. The duration and velocity of saccadic eye movements are very much dependent on vigilance. Comparisons were made with a number of psychometric tests [d 2 Durchstreichtest (cross out test), Viennese determination apparatus, and flicker fusion frequency] and the velocity of fast eye movements. The results of three separate investig

Distinguishing schizophrenic patients from healthy controls by quantitative measurement of eye movement parameters.

BACKGROUND: Eye tracking dysfunction is a putative trait marker for susceptibility to schizophrenia; however, it cannot be recommended as an additional tool for the diagnosis of schizophrenia, due to low sensitivity and specificity. METHODS: To assess the diagnostic potentials of combinations of eye movement paradigms, four smooth pursuit experiments (1: constant velocity of 15 degrees/sec; 2 and 3: combination with either visual or auditory distractors; 4: constant velocity of 30 degrees/sec) and two saccadic eye movement experiments (1: reflexive saccades; 2: voluntary saccades) were conduc

The Measurement of Eye Movements in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Structured Review of an Emerging Area.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion, occurs following a direct or indirect force to the head that causes a change in brain function. Many neurological signs and symptoms of mTBI can be subtle and transient, and some can persist beyond the usual recovery timeframe, such as balance, cognitive or sensory disturbance that may pre-dispose to further injury in the future. There is currently no accepted definition or diagnostic criteria for mTBI and therefore no single assessment has been developed or accepted as being able to identify those with an mTBI. Eye-movement assessment may be

Saccadic eye movements analysis as a measure of drug effect on central nervous system function.

Peak velocity (PSV) and duration (SD) of horizontal saccadic eye movements are demonstrably under the control of specific brain stem structures. Experimental and clinical evidence suggest the existence of an immediate premotor system for saccade generation located in the paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF). Effects on saccadic eye movements have been studied in normal volunteers with barbiturates, benzodiazepines, amphetamine and ethanol. On two occasions computer analysis of PSV, SD, saccade reaction time (SRT) and saccade accuracy (SA) was carried out in comparison with more tradit
