Eye movements in heterophoria.

Reference is made to earlier reports by the author in which versional recovery eye movements were observed during the cover test in the non-occluded eye in case of heterophoria. This provided support for Hering's Law, although the magnitude of the versional movement did not relate to the degree of heterophoria. Recent studies of eye movements during the cover test on very small heterophorias have suggested there is a threshold value below which these versional recovery movements are absent, and that is presence depends on such factors as the size of the phoria, the degree of ocular motor domin

Smooth pursuit eye movements and saccadic eye movements in patients with delusional disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study used eye movement tests to examine whether frontal lobe dysfunction is present in delusional disorder. METHOD: Smooth pursuit and voluntary saccadic eye movements of 15 delusional patients, 40 schizophrenic patients, and 40 normal subjects were recorded and analyzed statistically. RESULTS: The schizophrenic patients differed significantly from the normal subjects in some smooth pursuit eye movement characteristics, whereas both the schizophrenic and the delusional patients showed more saccades than the normal subjects during the smooth pursuit test. The delusional patie

[Neurology of eye movements].

Eye movements are necessary for clear and stable vision, for which images of the world should be brought to the fovea and be held steady on the retina. The main types of eye movements consist of saccadic eye movements, vergence, vestibular eye movements, smooth pursuit eye movements and eye movements for visual stabilization. Saccades are fast eye movements and have consistent relationship between their peak velocity and the size of the movements. The burst neurons in the brainstem are the generator of saccades and receive projections from the frontal eye field, supplementary eye field, pariet

Compensatory eye movements during voluntary head and neck movements.

We studied compensatory eye movements during passive and active head rotation using the video head impulse test in 5 healthy human subjects. In passive trials, compensatory eye movements occurred with a median latency of 16 ms following the onset of leftward and rightward head movements, and the median velocity gain was 0.94. In contrast, in active trials, the latencies of compensatory eye movements were reduced (median 4 ms) and the velocity gains were increased (median 1.08). We found similar reductions in latency and increases in gain of compensatory eye movements in active trials compared

Eye Movements in Neuropsychological Tasks.

This chapter reviews how recording and analysis of eye movements have been applied to understanding cognitive functioning in patients with neurological disease. Measures derived from the performance of instructed eye movement tests such as the anti-saccade and memory-guided saccade tasks have been shown to be associated with cognitive test performance and the early stages of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Other researchers have taken an ecological approach and recorded the uninstructed pattern of saccades made by patients during performance of establ

Central control of eye movements.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eye-movement research continues to provide an excellent tool for understanding the central control of motor function, both in health and disease. This article reviews recent findings in relation to saccadic eye movements, particularly antisaccades and microsaccades, with particular emphasis on the control of inaction, something which has recently become topical. RECENT FINDINGS: Microsaccades are under the control of the cerebral cortex, particularly the frontal and parietal eye fields. Their frequency and direction alters following presentation of visual stimuli. Spontaneo

Eye movements in vestibular disorders.

The differential diagnosis of patients with vestibular symptoms usually begins with the question: is the lesion central or is it peripheral? The answer commonly emerges from a careful examination of eye movements, especially when the lesion is located in otherwise clinically silent areas of the brain such as the vestibular portions of the cerebellum (flocculus, paraflocculus which is called the tonsils in humans, nodulus, and uvula) and the vestibular nuclei as well as immediately adjacent areas (the perihypoglossal nuclei and the paramedian nuclei and tracts). The neural circuitry that contro

Eye movements in neurodevelopmental disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this paper is to review the literature on eye-movement abnormalities associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. Eye-movement testing is a non-invasive quantitative approach for evaluating brain systems across the age spectrum. It thus provides a promising methodology for characterizing and documenting maturational abnormalities in brain systems associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent oculomotor studies have made significant contributions to the understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders, most notably in autism, attention-defici

The eye movements of syncope.

We videotaped the eye movements of syncope in 25 healthy volunteers who induced fainting by hyperventilation and Valsalva maneuver on a tilt table. In an additional three subjects, syncope was similarly induced during horizontal sinusoidal oscillation on a rotating chair while eye movements were recorded by electro-oculogram. Fourteen of 25 subjects experienced syncope on the tilt table. Six had downbeat nystagmus (DBN) at the onset that evolved into upward eye deviation, whereas seven showed isolated tonic upward deviation. In one subject the eyes remained in primary position. The gain of the

Eye movements in parkinsonian syndromes.

Eye movements were recorded in 14 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the "off" condition, 14 patients with striatonigral degeneration (SND), 10 patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD), and 10 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), with comparison with 12 control subjects. Vertical saccade paralysis was not observed in the PD, SND, and CBD groups but was present in 9 patients of 10 in the PSP group. In the PD and SND groups, horizontal reflexive visually guided saccade latency and accuracy were similar, and differed only slightly from those of controls. In the CBD grou

Eye movements of human albinos.

Albino mammals are known to suffer from misrouted optic projections and there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that human albinos have similar aberrant anatomical pathways. The present study examined the possible consequences of such aberrant pathways on the oculomotor performance of five adult human albinos. Optokinetic nystagmus to drifting grating patterns and pursuit eye movements were measured. The subjects' congenital nystagmus was also measured under different conditions of gaze position and ambient room illumination. Two of the subjects showed clear instances of an inversion in

Supranuclear Disorders of Eye Movements.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the basic anatomy and pathophysiology of the supranuclear ocular motor pathways, emphasizing clinical correlations. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: More advanced neuroimaging, particularly functional MRI, has yielded insight into previously unclear mechanisms of eye movement control with potential clinical implications. A better understanding of the mechanisms of eye movement control has implications for translational research, resulting in improved and early diagnosis and better treatment options. ESSENTIAL POINTS: Dysfunction of the supranuclear ocular motor pathways t

Eye movements in visual impairment.

This Special Issue describes the impact of visual impairment on visuomotor function. It includes contributions that examine gaze control in conditions associated with abnormal visual development such as amblyopia, dyslexia and neurofibromatosis as well as disorders associated with field loss later in life, such as macular degeneration and stroke. Specifically, the papers address both gaze holding (fixation), and gaze-following behavior (single saccades, sequences of saccades and smooth-pursuit) that characterize active vision in daily life and evaluate the influence of both pathological and si

Amblyopia and fixation eye movements.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by abnormal visual experience in early life that affects 3-5% of the population. Amblyopia results in a host of monocular and binocular visual afferent function deficits including reduced visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, depth perception, interocular suppression, and efferent function abnormalities such as unstable and inaccurate fixation. Conventional treatments such as patching therapy and newer dichoptic treatments are not always successful as 30-40% of patients experience recurrence/regression of amblyopia. There are numerous review art

Disorders of Vergence Eye Movements.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize current understanding regarding disorders of gaze with comitant ocular misalignment at distance or near and a full range of extraocular movement. Emphasis is placed on clinical features that may be used to differentiate underlying neurologic disease from the more common benign causes. The approach to the diagnostic evaluation and treatment is discussed. RECENT FINDINGS: Randomized controlled trials and Cochrane review suggest the superiority of formal office-based vision therapy in treating convergence insufficiency in children. Di
