A review of recent studies of prosopagnosia suggests that the weight of evidence has shifted in favor of regarding it as a disability that can be produced by a right hemisphere lesion alone even though bilateral disease remains the more frequent anatomical basis. It is possible that prosopagnosia resulting from a right hemisphere lesion occurs only within the context of some atypical condition of the left hemisphere. "Types" of prosopagnosia continue to be postulated and the "identification of individuality" hypothesis continues to be advanced. Autonomic and covert recognition studies of proso

For many years researchers and clinicians have been aware of the varying presenting signs and symptoms common in the TMD patient. The symptom-complex frequently includes preauricular pain; cephalgia (predominantly frontal, temporal, occipital, vertex, retro- and periorbital); cervicalgia (immobility/stiffness); otalgia (congestion, vertigo, tinnitus). The most prominent signs are those of joint sounds (popping, click and crepitus due to disc displacement with reduction and/or osseous breakdown); restricted mandibular excursion (disc displacement without reduction); and mandibular deviation/def

Major functions of the olfactory system include guiding ingestion and avoidance of environmental hazards. People with anosmia report reliance on others, for example to check the edibility of food, as their primary coping strategy. Facial expressions are a major source of non-verbal social information that can be used to guide approach and avoidance behaviour. Thus, it is of interest to explore whether a life-long absence of the sense of smell heightens sensitivity to others' facial emotions, particularly those depicting threat. In the present, online study 28 people with congenital anosmia (me

The goal of this study was to explore the ability of violent men to recognise facial affect. In contrast to traditional approaches to this research question, we took the effects of the models' sex and different types of violent behaviour into consideration. Data obtained from 71 violent men revealed that they recognised facial expressions of fear (p = .019) and disgust (p = .013) more accurately when displayed by female than male models. The opposite was found for angry faces (p = .006), while the models' sex did not affect the recognition of sad, happy and surprised facial expressions or neut

The assessment of facial expression is an important aspect of a clinical neurological examination, both as an indicator of a mood disorder and as a sign of neurological damage. To date, although studies have been conducted on certain psychosocial aspects of myasthenia, such as quality of life and anxiety, and on neuropsychological aspects such as memory, no studies have directly assessed facial emotion recognition accuracy. The aim of this study was to assess the facial emotion recognition accuracy (fear, surprise, sadness, happiness, anger, and disgust), empathy, and reaction time of patients

BACKGROUND: Studies of antisocial populations have found that they show deficits in recognition of facial affect. Such deficits are also found in other populations with clinical conditions such as autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorder.
AIMS: We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that facial affect recognition in the Scottish prison population would differ from matched controls. In addition, we aimed to investigate any relationship between facial affect recognition deficits and offence history.
METHODS: A sample of serving convicted prisoners, drawn from

The basal ganglia seem to be involved in emotional processing. Primary dystonia is a movement disorder considered to result from basal ganglia dysfunction, and the aim of the present study was to investigate emotion recognition in patients with primary focal dystonia. Thirty-two patients with primary cranial (n=12) and cervical (n=20) dystonia were compared to 32 healthy controls matched for age, sex, and educational level on the facially expressed emotion labeling (FEEL) test, a computer-based tool measuring a person's ability to recognize facially expressed emotions. Patients with cognitive

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The current review aims to discuss the incorporation of facial recognition software into the clinical practice of dysmorphology and medical genetics.
RECENT FINDINGS: Facial recognition software has improved the process of generating a differential diagnosis for rare genetic syndromes, and recent publications demonstrate utility in both research and clinical applications. Software programs are freely available to verified medical providers and can be incorporated into routine clinic encounters.
SUMMARY: As facial recognition software capabilities improve, two-dimensional i

Recognition and learning of complex images may depend on spatial processing characteristics of the visual system. Prosopagnosia, an impairment of visual learning and recognition of faces, might result from impaired perception in spatial channels carrying crucial information. We studied spatial contrast sensitivity (SCS) in two subjects with stable facial recognition defects. One had relative SCS reduction for high-frequency gratings but could process high frequencies in room light. The other had normal SCS. Both had intact spatial processing relative to image size. The results suggest that imp

Although recognizing emotions from facial expressions appears effortless, the field is divided between vision-based accounts, which posit matching to learned visual templates, and embodied accounts, which posit recruitment of facial motor circuits. We propose an ambiguity-gated, developmentally calibrated architecture in which the recognition system draws on sensorimotor information primarily when visual evidence is insufficient, with early motor experience proposed to shape the threshold and gain of this contribution. We tested this model across three studies (N = 185) integrating dynamic pro

Reading the non-verbal cues from faces to infer the emotional states of others is central to our daily social interactions from very early in life. Despite the relatively well-documented ontogeny of facial expression recognition in infancy, our understanding of the development of this critical social skill throughout childhood into adulthood remains limited. To this end, using a psychophysical approach we implemented the QUEST threshold-seeking algorithm to parametrically manipulate the quantity of signals available in faces normalized for contrast and luminance displaying the six emotional ex

OBJECTIVE: There have been few studies of the pharmacologic modulation of facial emotion recognition. The present study aimed to replicate and extend the finding that recognition of facial anger was selectively impaired by diazepam. The hypothesis was that, in comparison with placebo, diazepam would impair the recognition of facial anger in healthy volunteers, but not the recognition of 5 other basic emotions: happiness, surprise, fear, sadness and disgust.
DESIGN: A randomized, counterbalanced, double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subjects comparison of diazepam with placebo.
SETTING: A

Deficits in facial affect recognition have been shown repeatedly in schizophrenia. However, the stability of this deficit over time remains to be clarified. A total of 36 remitted, 32 acutely ill schizophrenic patients and 21 healthy volunteers participated in a cross-sectional and longitudinal study. All subjects were assessed twice within 4 weeks (acute schizophrenics and normal controls), or 12 weeks, respectively (remitted schizophrenics). Subjects had to identify six basic emotions from corresponding facial expressions shown as photographs on a video screen. Both acute and remitted schizo

Facial expression recognition system is an advanced technology that allows machines to recognize human emotions based on their facial expressions. In order to develop a robust prediction model, this research work proposes three distinct architectural models to produce a facial expression prediction system that looks like this: The first model is on using a support vector machine to carry out a classification task. As a follow-up to the second model, an attempt was made to create a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) using the VGG-NET (Visual Geometry Group Network). Following analysis of the resu

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Facial expression recognition technology will play an increasingly important role in our daily life. Autonomous driving, virtual reality and all kinds of robots integrated into our life depend on the development of facial expression recognition technology. Many tasks in the field of computer vision are based on deep learning technology and convolutional neural network. The paper proposes an occluded expression recognition model based on the generated countermeasure network. The model is divided into two modules, namely, occluded face image restoration and face recogni

Although major depressive disorder (MDD) is primarily characterized by mood symptoms, depressed patients have impairments in facial emotion recognition in many of the basic emotions (anger, fear, happiness, surprise, disgust and sadness). On the other hand, the data in remitted MDD (rMDD) patients is inconsistent and it is not clear that if those impairments persist in remission. To extend the current findings, we applied facial emotion recognition test to a group of remitted depressed women and compared to those of controls. Analyses of variance results showed a significant emotion and group

Patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BPD), by definition, have problems with emotional regulation. However, it remains uncertain whether these patients are also deficient at processing other people's emotions, particularly while manic. The present study examined the ability of 25 manic bipolar patients and 25 healthy participants on tasks of facial recognition and facial affect recognition at three different presentation durations: 500 ms, 750 ms, and 1000 ms. The groups did not differ in terms of age, education, sex, ethnicity, or estimated IQ. The groups did not differ significantly on

Orthognathic surgery is performed to correct dentoskeletal deformities and restore maxillomandibular symmetry. These changes may affect biometric identification and verification. The aim of this study was to assess the facial recognition capability of a commercially available software application in patients who had undergone orthognathic surgery. This retrospective study included 24 patients, of both sexes, who were treated for dentofacial deformities: 12 skeletal Class II and 12 Class III. Images of these patients taken in neutral expression and in smiling expression, acquired preoperatively
